Book Synopsis New Directions in Philosophical Theology by : Gavin Hyman
Download or read book New Directions in Philosophical Theology written by Gavin Hyman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of a new millennium, philosophical theology has become more contested than ever before. The appearance of non-realist theologies, postmodern theologies, and the theology of 'radical orthodoxy', has provoked a vibrant debate about the nature of theology itself. In what new directions should theology be moving in the wake of the 'end' of modernity? For over thirty years, Don Cupitt has been provoking theologians to reconsider the nature of their discipline. Taking their inspiration from his work and writing in his honour on the occasion of his 70th birthday, some of the leading figures in the contemporary theological scene address urgent questions facing theology today and, in doing so, exemplify the methodological diversity which characterises the contemporary field.
Book Synopsis Science and Religion by : John F. Haught
Download or read book Science and Religion written by John F. Haught and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Has science made religion intellectually implausible? Does it rule out the existence of a personal God? In an age of science can we really believe that the universe has a "purpose"? And, finally, doesn't religion hold much of the blame for the present ecological crisis?" "These questions form the nucleus of today's debate between science and religion. This book is a guide for that debate, identifying the questions, isolating the issues and pointing to ways the questions can be resolved." "There are four possible ways, says John F. Haught, that we can view the relationship between religion and science. First, they can stand in complete opposition - the conflict position. Or, we can believe they are so different that conflict is impossible - the contrast position. A third approach holds that while science and religion are distinct, each has important implications for the other. A fourth way views them as different but mutually supportive."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Book Synopsis Escaping My Responsibility by : Hugo Strandberg
Download or read book Escaping My Responsibility written by Hugo Strandberg and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is morality? This is the question this book is dealing with. The aim of the study is to show the distorting character of many common pictures of what morality is, pictures found inside and outside of philosophy. The central idea of the book is that the distorting character of these pictures is that they make it possible for me to escape my moral responsibility. Focusing on responsibility and our attempts to shut our eyes to it, questions such as the following are discussed: Is there a moral reality? Is it possible to show someone else what is good and bad? What is the relation between morality and religion? Are there moral truths? What can philosophically be said about the meaning of life?
Book Synopsis On Philosophy, Intelligibility, and the Ordinary by : Randy Ramal
Download or read book On Philosophy, Intelligibility, and the Ordinary written by Randy Ramal and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Randy Ramal argues that philosophy’s main responsibility lies in providing intelligibility to the ordinary language of everyday life while dispelling unwarranted skepticism. Philosophers need to go the hard way to fulfill this responsibility because of the constant and dangerous temptation to turn philosophy into a normative discipline rather than keep it as a descriptively hermeneutical enterprise. In On Philosophy, Intelligibility, and the Ordinary: Going the Bloody Hard Way, the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead is central to Ramal’s endeavor to demonstrate the need to separate the hermeneutical responsibility of philosophy from the normative aspects of responsibility. While showing the futility of labeling Whitehead as a purely disinterested philosopher who abandons the idea that ordinariness is relevant to good philosophical thinking, Ramal frames this discussion within a larger, in-depth engagement with a vast number of thinkers, philosophers, and literary figures whose works touch on the question of the ordinary.

Book Synopsis Christian Theology by : Robert A. Evans
Download or read book Christian Theology written by Robert A. Evans and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2001-12-21 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major teaching breakthrough, Christian Theology: A Case Method Approach bridges the gap between the theological reflection and human experience and encourages fruitful dialogue between divergent interpretations. Organized around central motifs in the Apostles' Creed, nine actual cases on contemporary themes have been prepared by experienced case writers. These cases represent a variety of issues which call for a response: hunger and faith, language and commitment, doubt and death. The goal of each is to relate Christian theology to a real life situation. But how reach this goal? This is the core question, and it provides the still point around which the discussions revolve. A total of thirty four Òtheological briefsÓ by representatives of major traditions and perspectives reflect on the cases involved and the issues to be resolved.
Book Synopsis Theology on Dover Beach by : Nicholas Langrishe Alleym Lash
Download or read book Theology on Dover Beach written by Nicholas Langrishe Alleym Lash and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-12 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface by Nicholas Lash: The risk is that a collection such as this will lack the unity necessary to make it useful, and readable, as a book. But I selected these particular pieces because, for all the variety of their themes and levels of treatment, they seemed to me to illustrate two enduring preoccupations: an attempt to grapple with problems arising from the historical character of Christian faith and theology, and a conviction that, far from surrendering its critical integrity and (relative) autonomy, Christian theological reflection only attains its own proper rigour and significance if it is continually borne in mind that such reflection is dependent upon, secondary to, Christian faith and practice. I have therefore concentrated on these two issues in the Introduction. If the emphasis in these essays is on questions of method, this is partly because the confusion and uncertainty which many Christians experience today is perhaps less obviously the expression of a crisis of faith than a crisis of culture: we are not sure how to go about the business of connecting our Christianity with other aspects of our life and experience; we are not sure what would count, and on what grounds, as appropriate ways of giving linguistic and conceptual expression to our faith. And these are therefore essays, essais, attempts, contributions to a discussion. In a situation such as ours, there is an inherent implausibility in the idea that any one man - be he theologian, philosopher, economist, or politician - can come up with answers, with solutions to our common problems.

Book Synopsis Holocaust Theology by : Dan Cohn-Sherbok
Download or read book Holocaust Theology written by Dan Cohn-Sherbok and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2002-02-11 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where was God during the Holocaust? And where has God been since? How has our religious belief been changed by the Shoah? For more than half a century, these questions have haunted both Jewish and Christian theologians. Holocaust Theology provides a panoramic survey of the writings of more than one hundred leading Jewish and Christian thinkers on these profound theological problems. Beginning with a general introduction to Holocaust theology and the religious challenge of the Holocaust, this sweeping collection brings together in one volume a coherent overview of the key theologies which have shaped responses to the Holocaust over the last several decades, including those addressing perplexing questions regarding Christian responsibility and culpability during the Nazi era. Each reading is preceded by a brief introduction. The volume will be invaluable to Rabbis and the clergy, students, scholars of the Holocaust and of religion, and all those troubled by the religious implications of the tragedy of the Holocaust. Contributors include Leo Baeck, Eugene Borowitz, Stephen Haynes, Abraham Joshua Heschel, Steven T. Katz, Primo Levi, Jacob Neusner, John Pawlikowski, Rosemary Radford Reuther, Jonathan Sarna, Paul Tillich, and Elie Wiesel.

Book Synopsis Abraham Joshua Heschel by : Stanisław Krajewski
Download or read book Abraham Joshua Heschel written by Stanisław Krajewski and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to the thought of one of the 20th century's most interesting philosophers of religion. Heschel, a traditional Polish Jew who became a modern thinker, was also an impressive prophet of interreligious dialogue. The book is the fruit of a scholarly conference held in 2007 at the University of Warsaw, in Heschel's native city, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth. Given the depth and scope of his thinking, the papers gathered in the volume will be of interest not only to philosophers, theologians, and scholars of Heschel, but also to those who know little about Heschel but are interested in the fundamental problems that appear at the borders between philosophy and theology, religion and modernity, Judaism and Christianity, and, more broadly, problems of interfaith relations and their future. Among the contributors to the volume there are many of the foremost Heschel scholars from the United States and Israel, as well as authors from Poland and other European countries. The authors believe that the infl uence of Heschel will continue to grow worldwide.
