The study was motivated by numerous factors, such as the need to recognize Francophone Africans as members of the French-speaking community, the increasing number of African-born students studying in Minnesota, and the desire to dispel stereotypes and increase cultural sensitivity toward Francophone Africans. Curriculum unit themes include the cultural, geographic, linguistic, and socioeconomic diversity within Francophone Africa, daily life in rural and urban Francophone African countries, the Francophone African products, practices, and perspectives of Animist, Muslim, and Christian religions, and the current political, social, and environmental situations in Francophone Africa. The study offers a potential curriculum unit for teachers of French who wish to integrate Francophone African cultures and perspectives into their classrooms.

The contributors transcend a Eurocentric approach not only in terms of the individual historiographies they assess, but also in the methodologies they use for comparative analysis. Moving beyond the traditional national focus of historiography, the book offers a genuinely comparative consideration of the commonalities and differences in writing history. Distinguishing among distinct cultural identities, the contributors consider the ways and means of intellectual transfers and assess the strength of local historiographical traditions as they are challenged from outside. The essays explore the question of the utility and the limits of conceptions of modernism that apply Western theories of development to non-Western cultures. Warning against the dominant tendency in recent historiographies of non-Western societies to define these predominantly in relation to Western thought, the authors show the extent to which indigenous traditions have been overlooked. The key question is how the triad of industrialization, modernization, and the historicization process, which was decisive in the development of modern academic historiography, also is valid beyond Europe. Inexperienced American students of French, commonly unversed in Sub-Saharan African cultures, cannot comprehend the relationship between the literary elements and cultural perspectives represented in Francophone Sub-Sahran African literature. Existing literary analysis methods employed in intermediate French classes, specifically 'explication de text, ' cannot suffice in providing the students the background knowledge about African cultures necessary for comprehending these texts. These arguments lead to the development of my '3R' model of analysis (Recognize - Research - Relate) for Francophone subsaharan African literature ... This study emphasizes the importance of concurrent literary analysis and cultural learning for American students approaching Francophone Sub-Saharan African literature for the first time.
