Book Synopsis Integrated Environmental Management by : Yasumasa Itakura
Download or read book Integrated Environmental Management written by Yasumasa Itakura and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-04-29 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The change from a rural to an industrial economy affects many countries. Rapid growth and development causes significant changes in environmental management for countries beginning to confront serious degradation problems. In the Pacific Rim, rich in environmental and human resources, widespread pollution problems affect water and air quality, contaminating groundwater and soils and dramatically increasing human exposure to hazardous waste. Critical resources - such as rainforests - disappear at an alarming rate. The book features in-depth reviews of the Pacific Rim's increasing environmental problems. It examines every major issue including hazardous waste, solid waste, water and wastewater, air pollution, biodiversity, industrial waste and much more. The final chapters outline education and information-sharing strategies designed to change environmental policy, putting the focus on slowing growth and working towards sustainable development. Integrated Environmental Management provides an information-packed review of the regions' environmental problems, concentrating on problem solving, sustainable development, and education. Anyone faced with environmental problems related to population growth and rapid industrialization will find this book particularly enlightening.
Book Synopsis Sustaining the Asia Pacific Miracle by : André Dua
Download or read book Sustaining the Asia Pacific Miracle written by André Dua and published by Peterson Institute for International Economics. This book was released on 1997 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asia Pacific countries have experienced extraordinary economic growth in recent years. But the region also suffers from choking air pollution, fouled water, ravaged forests, depleted fisheries, and other environmental problems.Eager to promote further growth, governments in the region have embarked on an ambitious program of economic integration through the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. In this volume, Dua and Esty argue that APEC's trade and investment liberalization can be compatible with environmental protection. They stress, moreover, that true prosperity and the APEC vision of a "community of Asia Pacific economies" cannot be achieved without attention to public health and ecological threats, resource management issues, and tensions at the economy-environment interface. The authors identify the issues that must be dealt with internationally and propose an ambitious environmental action agenda for APEC that would play an important role in that strategy.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Land Management in Greater Central Asia by : Victor R. Squires
Download or read book Sustainable Land Management in Greater Central Asia written by Victor R. Squires and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greater Central Asia encompasses a vast area that includes deserts, natural grasslands, steppes, shrublands and alpine regions. Many of these land types are degraded and productivity is falling at a time when human populations and livestock inventories are on the rise. Ecosystem stability and biodiversity are under threat and there is an urgent need to develop more sustainable land management regimes. This book uses an integrated regional approach to provide a comprehensive exploration of sustainable land development in Central Asia. An interdisciplinary team of experts analyses the economic, ecological, sociological, technological and political factors surrounding sustainable land and water management in the region, sharing potential problems and solutions. As international concern about desertification grows, the book concludes by asking how the region is likely to develop in the future. This book will be of value to scholars, students, policy makers and NGOs with an interest in sustainable development in Central Asia.
Book Synopsis The Cornerstone of Development by : Jamie Schnurr
Download or read book The Cornerstone of Development written by Jamie Schnurr and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sustainable development" quickly became the universal goal for environmentalists in the 1990s, motivated by the 1988 Brundtland Report and the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio. When the time came to bring theory into reality, sustainable development revealed far more complexity than first anticipated. To attain sustainable development in the full sense of the phrase"meeting present needs without compromising the resources needed for future societies"environmental and social concerns would need a constant presence in all major economic decisions. The Cornerstone of Development: Balancing Environmental, Social, and Economic Imperatives profiles many of the first attempts to implement sustainable development initiatives worldwide. The model: Canada's experience with "multistakeholder" decision-making. Under the guidance of Canada's National Task Force on Environment and Economy, nationwide and provincial round tables brought government officials together with corporate officers to formulate sustainable development guidelines. Authorized by the Canadian government to serve as an "Agenda 21 organization," the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) subsequently researched the feasibility of adapting the multistakeholder approach to the needs and practices of developing countries. The results are in these pages: valuable case histories from Africa, Latin America, Asia and Canada, each recounting the risks and benefits from integrating environmental, social and economic policies. When IDRC members were asked for ways to address environmental sustainability, they had few examples to follow"and little evidence that such endeavors could be fulfilled. The research and problem-solving efforts they produced are now collected here, for the guidance of other environment/development balance programs worldwide.
