This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important field pests of common beans is bean flies. There is interaction of bean fly with root rot and Fusarium wilt disease complex in soils with depleted nutrients causing yield loss. Alternative management strategies were evaluated in Kenya in regions with severe decline in soil fertility to optimize yields. There was variation in bean fly infestation and damage in the cultivars and fertilizer rates during different seasons and locations. Plant resistance and response to fertilizer were influenced by environmental conditions, location specific and season. Phosphorus fertilizer increased growth and grain yield but didn't reduce infestation and plant damage, while Organic manure did. Efficiency in P- Acquisition was determined to be important in plant tolerance to bean fly . Cultivar selection is important factor in developing IPM strategy for bean fly control. Resistant varieties have morphological, physiological or biochemical factors that when combined with soil fertility amendments are effective in control. This book is recommended for research scientist, agricultural extension service providers, and university and middle level agricultural college students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of the research and application of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in tropical regions. The first section explores the agro-ecological framework that represents the foundations of IPM, in addition to emerging technologies in chemical and biological methods that are core to pest control in tropical crops. The second section follows a crop-based approach and provides details of current IPM applications in the main tropical food crops (such as cereals, legumes, root and tuber crops, sugarcane, vegetables, banana and plantain, citrus, oil palm, tea, cocoa and coffee) and also fibre crops (such as cotton) and tropical forests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As food demand has grown worldwide, agricultural production has intensified with a concomitant expansion in pesticide use. Concerns over pesticide-induced health and environmental problems, increased pest resistance to pesticides, and continued losses due to pests, have stimulated the search for alternative pest management solutions. As a result integrated pest management (IPM) approaches have been developed and applied that rely on genetic, cultural, biological and information-intensive pest management alternatives. This book presents and critiques the participatory approaches that can be used to globalize IPM. It describes the development, deployment, and evaluation of participatory IPM. All the chapters include perspectives from both the US and developing country scientists who are on the front lines of IPM generation and diffusion. The book is unique amongst IPM books in that it stresses policy analysis, social and economic impact assessment, multidisciplinary field research and technology transfer mechanisms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change has intensified in recent decades, which has affected crop production as well as facilitated the emergence of new diseases and insect pests, causing serious threats to agriculture. Farmers have mostly taken a crop-based approach to insect pest management (IPM); the authors of this new volume, however, take the unique approach that IPM based on specific cropping systems is more efficient, resulting in reduced cultivation costs, increased yield and profitability, and decreased residue from crop produce and products. This volume presents the results of research done by crop protection scientists on integrated pest management in diverse cropping systems based on rice, wheat, maize, pulses, food legumes, oilseeds, groundnut, potato, and other horticulture crops. With chapters written by well-known and experienced scientists in their fields, this volume provides in-depth knowledge on integrated pest management in conjunction with an array of specific cropping systems, taking into consideration all the elements, including the crops, crop sequences, spatial and temporal aspects of managing an agricultural system, and other aspects. This volume will be valuable for entomologists, plant pathologists, and agronomists, as well as for farmers—both small and industrial sized, agricultural extension centers, faculty and students, and many others involved with crop cultivation.

Book excerpt: An excellent reference book for plant breeders and entomologists, Global Plant Genetic Resources for Insect-Resistant Crops combines germplasm preservation with use in insect-resistant crop development and basic research. The contributions of the authors represent the efforts, cooperation, and understanding of world leaders in the conservation and use of global plant genetic resources for sustainable agricultural production. Concepts addressed include dependency of modern agriculture on chemical pest control and applications of biotechnology in use of natural plant genes for insect-resistant crops.
