TEUBNER in Buchform erschienen (vgl.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What exactly is analysis? What are infinitely small or infinitely large quantities? What are indivisibles and infinitesimals? What are real numbers, continuity, the continuum, differentials, and integrals? You’ll find the answers to these and other questions in this unique book! It explains in detail the origins and evolution of this important branch of mathematics, which Euler dubbed the “analysis of the infinite.” A wealth of diagrams, tables, color images and figures serve to illustrate the fascinating history of analysis from Antiquity to the present. Further, the content is presented in connection with the historical and cultural events of the respective epochs, the lives of the scholars seeking knowledge, and insights into the subfields of analysis they created and shaped, as well as the applications in virtually every aspect of modern life that were made possible by analysis.

Book Synopsis Establishing Quantum Physics in Göttingen by : Arne Schirrmacher
Download or read book Establishing Quantum Physics in Göttingen written by Arne Schirrmacher and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum mechanics – the grandiose theory that describes nature down to the submicroscopic level – was first formulated in Göttingen in 1925. How did this come about and why is it that Göttingen became the pre-eminent location for a revolution in physics? This book is the first to investigate the wide range of factors that were pivotal for quantum physics to be established in Göttingen. These include the process of generational change of physics professors, the hopes of mathematicians seeking new fields of research, and a new understanding of the interplay of experiment, theory and philosophy. The other books in the four-volume collection address the beginnings of quantum physics research at Copenhagen, Berlin, and Munich. These works emerged from an expansive study on the quantum revolution as a major transformation of physical knowledge undertaken by the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and the Fritz Haber Institute (2006–2012). Book Synopsis The Kernel Function and Conformal Mapping by : Stefan Bergman
Download or read book The Kernel Function and Conformal Mapping written by Stefan Bergman and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1950-03 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kernel Function and Conformal Mapping by Stefan Bergman is a revised edition of ""The Kernel Function"". The author has made extensive changes in the original volume. The present book will be of interest not only to mathematicians, but also to engineers, physicists, and computer scientists. The applications of orthogonal functions in solving boundary value problems and conformal mappings onto canonical domains are discussed; and publications are indicated where programs for carrying out numerical work using high-speed computers can be found. The unification of methods in the theory of functions of one and several complex variables is one of the purposes of introducing the kernel function and the domains with a distinguished boundary. This approach has been extensively developed during the last two decades. This second edition of Professor Bergman's book reviews this branch of the theory including recent developments not dealt with in the first edition. The presentation of the topics is simple and presupposes only knowledge of an elementary course in the theory of analytic functions of one variable.

Book Synopsis Polynomial Operator Equations in Abstract Spaces and Applications by : Ioannis K. Argyros
Download or read book Polynomial Operator Equations in Abstract Spaces and Applications written by Ioannis K. Argyros and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polynomial operators are a natural generalization of linear operators. Equations in such operators are the linear space analog of ordinary polynomials in one or several variables over the fields of real or complex numbers. Such equations encompass a broad spectrum of applied problems including all linear equations. Often the polynomial nature of many nonlinear problems goes unrecognized by researchers. This is more likely due to the fact that polynomial operators - unlike polynomials in a single variable - have received little attention. Consequently, this comprehensive presentation is needed, benefiting those working in the field as well as those seeking information about specific results or techniques. Polynomial Operator Equations in Abstract Spaces and Applications - an outgrowth of fifteen years of the author's research work - presents new and traditional results about polynomial equations as well as analyzes current iterative methods for their numerical solution in various general space settings. Topics include: Special cases of nonlinear operator equations Solution of polynomial operator equations of positive integer degree n Results on global existence theorems not related with contractions Galois theory Polynomial integral and polynomial differential equations appearing in radiative transfer, heat transfer, neutron transport, electromechanical networks, elasticity, and other areas Results on the various Chandrasekhar equations Weierstrass theorem Matrix representations Lagrange and Hermite interpolation Bounds of polynomial equations in Banach space, Banach algebra, and Hilbert space The materials discussed can be used for the following studies Advanced numerical analysis Numerical functional analysis Functional analysis Approximation theory Integral and differential equation
Book Synopsis Functional Analysis by : L. V. Kantorovich
Download or read book Functional Analysis written by L. V. Kantorovich and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functional Analysis, Second Edition is an exposition of the theory of topological vector spaces, partially ordered spaces, and the development of the theory of integral operators and their representations on ideal spaces of measurable functions. Although this edition has deviated substantially from the first edition, it has still retained the overall plan, selection, and arrangement of the topics. The text is primarily devoted to the applications of functional analysis to applied analysis. However, these concepts have been extended and modernized. Some topics of functional analysis connected with applications to mathematical economics and control theory are also included in this edition. The applications of functional analysis are both wide and far-reaching as these are common language for all areas of mathematics involving the concept of continuity. Those who are in the field of mathematics, mechanics, and theoretical physics will find this book a valuable resource.

Download or read book Functional Analysis, Spectral Theory, and Applications written by Manfred Einsiedler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a careful treatment of functional analysis and some of its applications in analysis, number theory, and ergodic theory. In addition to discussing core material in functional analysis, the authors cover more recent and advanced topics, including Weyl’s law for eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator, amenability and property (T), the measurable functional calculus, spectral theory for unbounded operators, and an account of Tao’s approach to the prime number theorem using Banach algebras. The book further contains numerous examples and exercises, making it suitable for both lecture courses and self-study. Functional Analysis, Spectral Theory, and Applications is aimed at postgraduate and advanced undergraduate students with some background in analysis and algebra, but will also appeal to everyone with an interest in seeing how functional analysis can be applied to other parts of mathematics.

Book Synopsis A History of Folding in Mathematics by : Michael Friedman
Download or read book A History of Folding in Mathematics written by Michael Friedman and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2018-05-25 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is well known that the Delian problems are impossible to solve with a straightedge and compass – for example, it is impossible to construct a segment whose length is cube root of 2 with these instruments – the discovery of the Italian mathematician Margherita Beloch Piazzolla in 1934 that one can in fact construct a segment of length cube root of 2 with a single paper fold was completely ignored (till the end of the 1980s). This comes as no surprise, since with few exceptions paper folding was seldom considered as a mathematical practice, let alone as a mathematical procedure of inference or proof that could prompt novel mathematical discoveries. A few questions immediately arise: Why did paper folding become a non-instrument? What caused the marginalisation of this technique? And how was the mathematical knowledge, which was nevertheless transmitted and prompted by paper folding, later treated and conceptualised? Aiming to answer these questions, this volume provides, for the first time, an extensive historical study on the history of folding in mathematics, spanning from the 16th century to the 20th century, and offers a general study on the ways mathematical knowledge is marginalised, disappears, is ignored or becomes obsolete. In doing so, it makes a valuable contribution to the field of history and philosophy of science, particularly the history and philosophy of mathematics and is highly recommended for anyone interested in these topics.
