Book excerpt: The integral equation method for transonic flow, originally suggested by Oswatitsch and extended by Spreiter, Zierep, Hancock and Nixon is interpreted as a method of weighted residuals. The underlying mathematical concepts are developed in several appendices. This interpretation makes it possible to combine the method with other weighted residual approaches, for instance, finite difference or finite element methods. The latter methods, because of their strongly-localized character are particularly well-suited to treat the transition through the sonic line and shocks. The integral equation method is best in the subsonic part of the flow field. Using the integral equation method only in far field, one obtains far field conditions which approximately take into account nonlinear terms even in the far field, and, therefore, are more accurate than far field conditions so far available in the literature.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wind tunnel boundary interference at transonic speeds on a thin airfoil in a two-dimensional perforated-wall wind tunnel was determined. The interference was found by applying an integral equation method to the nonlinear transonic small disturbance equation including embedded supersonic regions with shock waves. The kernels of the ensuing integral equation were replaced by series approximations, and the integrals were evaluated in closed form. The iterative technique used to calculate the interference from the integral equation method is shown to converge rapidly, and the computing time for the integral equation method is typically an order of magnitude less than present numerical methods. As a special case, the integral equation method for a thin airfoil in free air was also examined. It was found that the introduction of a novel influence function yields, for the first time, a self-contained integral equation for a lifting airfoil. In addition, a systematic study of the classical assumption used to simplify the integral equation shows that the integral method can provide solutions in good agreement with results from the numerical methods.

Book excerpt: The unsteady transonic small perturbation differential equation is converted into an integrodifferential equation by application of the classical Green's function method. It is shown that no contribution form sock waves explicitly appears in this integral equation, due to the shock capturing properties of the Green's function method. After assuming that the motion consists of small infinitesimal perturbations around a thin nearly-planar body, a simplified integral equation for the streamwise velocity component is obtained, which is suitable for fast numerical computations. Keywords: Unsteady flow; Transonic flow; Three-dimensional flow. (Australia).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a solid and unitary mathematical foundation of the basic and advanced principles of aerodynamics. The densities of the fundamental solutions are determined from singular integral equations. The fundamental solutions method in aerodynamics was considered for the first time and used by the author in over 30 papers published in prestigious journals (e.g. QAM, AIAA, ZAMM, etc) in order to develop a unitary theory. The boundary element method is used for numerical approximations in compressible aerodynamics. The text incorporates several original contributions, among other traditional mathematical methods. The book also represents a comprehensive presentation of research results since the seminal books on aerodynamics of Ashley and Landahl (1965) and Katz & Plotkin (1991). A rigorous mathematical approach is used to present and explain classic and modern results in this field of science. The author has therefore conceived several appendices on the Distribution Theory, the singular Integral Equations Theory, the Finite Part, Gauss Quadrature Formulae, etc. The book is concluded by a relevant bibliographical list which is especially useful for researchers. The book is aimed primarily at applied mathematicians, aeronautical engineers and space science researchers. The text may be used also as a comprehensive introduction to the mathematical foundations fo aerodynamics, by graduate students n engineering and fluid dynamics with a strong mathematical background.
