Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book began life as a set of notes that I developed for a course at the University of Washington entitled Introduction to Modern Algebra for Tea- ers. Originally conceived as a text for future secondary-school mathematics teachers, it has developed into a book that could serve well as a text in an - dergraduatecourseinabstractalgebraoracoursedesignedasanintroduction to higher mathematics. This book di?ers from many undergraduate algebra texts in fundamental ways; the reasons lie in the book’s origin and the goals I set for the course. The course is a two-quarter sequence required of students intending to f- ?ll the requirements of the teacher preparation option for our B.A. degree in mathematics, or of the teacher preparation minor. It is required as well of those intending to matriculate in our university’s Master’s in Teaching p- gram for secondary mathematics teachers. This is the principal course they take involving abstraction and proof, and they come to it with perhaps as little background as a year of calculus and a quarter of linear algebra. The mathematical ability of the students varies widely, as does their level of ma- ematical interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integer-valued polynomials on the ring of integers have been known for a long time and have been used in calculus. Polya and Ostrowski generalized this notion to rings of integers of number fields. More generally still, one may consider a domain $D$ and the polynomials (with coefficients in its quotient field) mapping $D$ into itself. They form a $D$-algebra - that is, a $D$-module with a ring structure. Appearing in a very natural fashion, this ring possesses quite a rich structure, and the very numerous questions it raises allow a thorough exploration of commutative algebra. Here is the first book devoted entirely to this topic. This book features: thorough reviews of many published works; self-contained text with complete proofs; and numerous exercises.

Book excerpt: From Polynomials to Sums of Squares describes a journey through the foothills of algebra and number theory based around the central theme of factorization. The book begins by providing basic knowledge of rational polynomials, then gradually introduces other integral domains, and eventually arrives at sums of squares of integers. The text is complemented with illustrations that feature specific examples. Other than familiarity with complex numbers and some elementary number theory, very little mathematical prerequisites are needed. The accompanying disk enables readers to explore the subject further by removing the tedium of doing calculations by hand. Throughout the text there are practical activities involving the computer.

Book excerpt: This volume presents a multi-dimensional collection of articles highlighting recent developments in commutative algebra. It also includes an extensive bibliography and lists a substantial number of open problems that point to future directions of research in the represented subfields. The contributions cover areas in commutative algebra that have flourished in the last few decades and are not yet well represented in book form. Highlighted topics and research methods include Noetherian and non- Noetherian ring theory as well as integer-valued polynomials and functions. Specific topics include: · Homological dimensions of Prüfer-like rings · Quasi complete rings · Total graphs of rings · Properties of prime ideals over various rings · Bases for integer-valued polynomials · Boolean subrings · The portable property of domains · Probabilistic topics in Intn(D) · Closure operations in Zariski-Riemann spaces of valuation domains · Stability of domains · Non-Noetherian grade · Homotopy in integer-valued polynomials · Localizations of global properties of rings · Topics in integral closure · Monoids and submonoids of domains The book includes twenty articles written by many of the most prominent researchers in the field. Most contributions are authored by attendees of the conference in commutative algebra held at the Graz University of Technology in December 2012. There is also a small collection of invited articles authored by those who did not attend the conference. Following the model of the Graz conference, the volume contains a number of comprehensive survey articles along with related research articles featuring recent results that have not yet been published elsewhere.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive, in-depth overview of elementary mathematics as explored in Mathematical Olympiads around the world. It expands on topics usually encountered in high school and could even be used as preparation for a first-semester undergraduate course. This third and last volume covers Counting, Generating Functions, Graph Theory, Number Theory, Complex Numbers, Polynomials, and much more. As part of a collection, the book differs from other publications in this field by not being a mere selection of questions or a set of tips and tricks that applies to specific problems. It starts from the most basic theoretical principles, without being either too general or too axiomatic. Examples and problems are discussed only if they are helpful as applications of the theory. Propositions are proved in detail and subsequently applied to Olympic problems or to other problems at the Olympic level. The book also explores some of the hardest problems presented at National and International Mathematics Olympiads, as well as many essential theorems related to the content. An extensive Appendix offering hints on or full solutions for all difficult problems rounds out the book.

Book excerpt: This monograph makes available, in English, the elementary parts of classical algebraic number theory. This second edition follows closely the plan and style of the first edition. The principal changes are the correction of misprints, the expansion or simplification of some arguments, and the omission of the final chapter on units in order to make way for the introduction of some two hundred problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a self-contained exposition of several core aspects of the theory of rational polyhedra with a view towards algorithmic applications to efficient counting of integer points, a problem arising in many areas of pure and applied mathematics. The approach is based on the consistent development and application of the apparatus of generating functions and the algebra of polyhedra. Topics range from classical, such as the Euler characteristic, continued fractions, Ehrhart polynomial, Minkowski Convex Body Theorem, and the Lenstra-Lenstra-Lovasz lattice reduction algorithm, to recent advances such as the Berline-Vergne local formula. The text is intended for graduate students and researchers. Prerequisites are a modest background in linear algebra and analysis as well as some general mathematical maturity. Numerous figures, exercises of varying degree of difficulty as well as references to the literature and publicly available software make the text suitable for a graduate course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book corresponds to a mathematical course given in 1986/87 at the University Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg. This work is primarily intended for graduate students. The following are necessary prerequisites : a few standard definitions in set theory, the definition of rational integers, some elementary facts in Combinatorics (maybe only Newton's binomial formula), some theorems of Analysis at the level of high schools, and some elementary Algebra (basic results about groups, rings, fields and linear algebra). An important place is given to exercises. These exercises are only rarely direct applications of the course. More often, they constitute complements to the text. Mostly, hints or references are given so that the reader should be able to find solutions. Chapters one and two deal with elementary results of Number Theory, for example : the euclidean algorithm, the Chinese remainder theorem and Fermat's little theorem. These results are useful by themselves, but they also constitute a concrete introduction to some notions in abstract algebra (for example, euclidean rings, principal rings ... ). Algorithms are given for arithmetical operations with long integers. The rest of the book, chapters 3 through 7, deals with polynomials. We give general results on polynomials over arbitrary rings. Then polynomials with complex coefficients are studied in chapter 4, including many estimates on the complex roots of polynomials. Some of these estimates are very useful in the subsequent chapters.

A large number of non-routine problems are given. Reviews & Endorsements This is a very readable introduction to number theory, with particular emphasis on diophantine equations, and requires only a school knowledge of mathematics. The exposition is admirably clear. More advanced or recent work is cited as background, where relevant … [T]here are welcome novelties: Gauss's own evaluation of Gauss's sums, which is still perhaps the most elegant, is reproduced apparently for the first time. There are 180 examples, many of considerable interest, some of these being little known. -- Mathematical Reviews
