Book excerpt: Vibration and temperature measurement tests were conducted on a production OH-58A helicopter to define the instrument and avionics vibration and temperature environment for both weapons-firing and nonweapons-firing flight conditions. Testing was performed by the United States Army Aviation Systems Test Activity, Edwards Air Force Base, California, between 27 May and 24 June 1971. The testing consisted of four flights, totaling 3.0 productive test hours. Vibration data were recorded from seven triaxial accelerometer locations for 29 flight conditions, and narrow-band spectral analyses were performed on the vibration data. The results of the spectral analyses were summarized by use of statistical methods. The primary source of low-frequency vibrations was the main rotor, and the primary source of high-frequency vibrations was gunfire. The characteristic of the instrument and avionics vibration isolation mounts to amplify the vibrations at the main rotor driving frequencies is a short coming. Interior cabin temperatures of 25 C and 6 C above the ambient air temperature were recorded for static and in-flight conditions, respectively. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The OH-58A light observation helicopter has a single main rotor and a two-bladed, semirigid, and teetering antitorque tail rotor. The tail rotor also has a delta-three hinge. The cockpit provides side-by-side seating for a crew of two (pilot and copilot/observer), and the cargo compartment has seats for two passengers. Dual flight controls are provided. The cyclic and collective controls are hydraulically boosted and irreversible, while the tail rotor control is unboosted. The landing gear consists of fixed, energy-absorbing skids. The helicopter is powered by an Allison T63-A-700 free gas turbine engine with a takeoff power rating of 317 shaft horsepower (shp) under sea-level, standard-day uninstalled conditions. The main transmission has a rating of 270 shp for continuous operation, with a takeoff power limit of 317 shp (5-minute rating). A list of the aircraft flight instruments and navigation equipment is shown.

Book excerpt: An environmental test was conducted in the Climatic Laboratory, Eglin Air Force Base (AFB), Florida, to determine the adequacy of the OH-58A helicopter for its intended use in extreme temperature environments. The pilot's body temperatures was recorded during the test. The testing consisted of 11 data runs for a total of 13.1 hours. The aircraft is generally acceptable for operation between 0 and 105 F. Operation of the aircraft above 105 F is limited by restriction of power available because of turbine outlet temperature limitations and by reduction of the pilot's ability to perform his required tasks because of fatigue. Operation of the aircraft below 0 F is limited by four deficiencies.

Book excerpt: Performance tests were conducted on a production OH-58A helicopter to determine compliance with performance guarantees outlined in the detail specification and approved revisions, and also to provide information for the operator's manual. The testing consisted of 99 flights totaling 62.5 productive hours. The OH-58A met or exceeded all of the contractual performance guarantees. The engine inlet loses with the particle separator installed exceeded the limits of the detail specification. A single flight at cold temperatures indicated that level flight performance is significantly affected by compressibility. Although all contractual hover performance guarantees were met, the helicopter could not hover out of ground effect on a 95 F day at gross weights greater than 2930 pounds with the particle separator installed. Under moderate temperature conditions, the performance capabilities of the OH-58A are satisfactory for mission accomplishment. It is recommended that consideration be given to increasing the utility of the OH-58A by installing a more powerful engine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Army aviation expanded dramatically in both size and breadth of activities after its inception in 1942, but much of its post-World War II history, particularly after the establishment of the Air Force as an independent service by the national Security Act of 1947, has been relatively neglected. Despite a certain amount of jockeying for position by both services, particularly in the early years after their separation, the Army was able to carve out a clear transport and operational combat role for its own air arm. "A History of Army Aviation - 1950-1962" examines the development of the Army's air wing, especially for air support of ground troops, both in terms of organization and in relation to the ongoing friction with the Air Force. After describing the rapid expansion of purely Army air power after 1950 and the accompanying expansion of aviation training, the book delves into the reorganization of aviation activities within a Directorate of Army Aviation. It also provides a valuable account of the successful development of aircraft armament, perhaps the most significant advance of this period. In particular, intensive experimentation at the Army Aviation School led to several practical weapons systems and helped to prove that weapons could be fired from rotary aircraft. This arming of the helicopter was to have a profound effect on both Army organization and combat doctrine, culminating in official approval of the armed helicopter by the Department of the Army in 1960. "A History of Army Aviation - 1950-1962" also explores the development of new aircraft between 1955 and 1962, including the UH-1 medical evacuation, transport, and gunship helicopter and the HC-1 cargo copter. In addition, the book discusses the Berlin Crisis of 1961 as an impetus for immediate and unexpected expansion of army aviation, quickly followed by the beginnings of intervention in Vietnam by the end of 1962.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Avionic Systems, Second Edition explains the principles and theory of modern avionic systems and how they are implemented with current technology for both civil and military aircraft. The systems are analysed mathematically, where appropriate, so that the design and performance can be understood. The book covers displays and man-machine interaction, aerodynamics and aircraft control, fly-by-wire flight control, inertial sensors and attitude derivation, navigation systems, air data and air data systems, autopilots and flight management systems, avionic systems integration and unmanned air vehicles. About the Author. Dick Collinson has had "hands-on" experience of most of the systems covered in this book and, as Manager of the Flight Automation Research Laboratory of GEC-Marconi Avionics Ltd. (now part of BAE Systems Ltd.), led the avionics research activities for the company at Rochester, Kent for many years. He was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 1989 for his contribution to avionic systems research and development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early stages of helicopter development, when helicopters were able to lift just slightly more than their own weight, the military services were eagerly seeking to obtain a variety of larger, more useful helicopters. The youthful helicopter industry expressed optimism, although at times unrealistic, in its ability to meet the military requirements. The development of the helicopter program within the Marine Corps was sparked by the foresight and imagination of the officers of the period. While early helicopters provided stepping stones for an orderly progression of the program, the slowness of the technical advances and the periods of financial austerity after World War II and Korea prevented the Marine Corps from developing the vertical envelopment concept as rapidly as desired. The program gained interest and momentum, however, as a result of the success of helicopters in Korea. As Lieutenant General Gerald C. Thomas stated: "Indeed, the helicopter gave clear evidence, from its first tactical employment, that a major advance in combat was at hand." This history, which traces the development of helicopters in the Marine Corps from 1946 to 1962, offers a tribute to the creative vision and planning of a handful of Marine officers who conceived of the vertical assault concept in amphibious operations at a time when suitable aircraft to make it work did not exist. The story of the subsequent struggle to procure and develop those aircraft, to refine a doctrine for their employment, and to familiarize the Marine Corps with their use is an interesting and vital part of modern Marine Corps history. The documentary basis for this monograph was primarily the official records of the Marine Corps and Navy Department, but considerable use was made of interviews and correspondence with key individuals involved in all phases of helicopter development.
