Book excerpt: The main goal of the IPN Video Study is to systematically describe and analyse physics instruction and to investigate its relevance for understanding-oriented learning in the classroom. In the first phase of the IPN Video Study, various guidelines and instruments for data collection were developed and published. In the second phase of the project, a more elaborated approach was realised.This technical report provides an overview of all the tools and methods used in this study. It shows how to run a video study that analyses patterns of instruction and their impact on cognitive as well as motivational-affective learning outcomes. The report includes the documentation of the organisation and realisation of the IPN Video Study. In addition, it provides standardised guidelines for collecting video tapes. Moreover, the technical report presents standardised guidelines for the transcription of video tapes and describes the observation and coding procedures in detail. Finally, this volume reports scale documentations of all tests and questionnaires.

In summary, the findings emphasize that student perceptions of teaching quality can be a valid and reliable source of feedback for teachers. In addition, it is argued that the effectiveness of student feedback depends very much on the support for teachers when making use of the feedback. It brings this tradition, which virtually dominated German curricular thought and teacher education until the 1960s when American curriculum theory entered Germany--and which is now experiencing a renaissance--to the English-speaking world, where it has been essentially unknown. The intent is to capture in one volume the core (at least) of the tradition of Didaktik and to communicate its potential relevance to English-language curricularists and teacher educators. It introduces a theoretical tradition which, although very different in almost every respect from those we know, offers a set of approaches that suggest ways of thinking about problems of reflection on curricular and teaching praxis (the core focus of the tradition) which the editors believe are accessible to North American readers--with appropriate "translation." These ways of thinking and related praxis are very relevant to notions such as reflective teaching and the discourse on teachers as professionals. It has a Secretariat located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. lEA studies have reported on a wide range of topics, each contributing to a deeper understanding of educational processes. The CompEd study is a project that sheds light on the way computers have been introduced in education and on how they are being used across the world today. The study proceeded in two stages with data collected for stage 1 in 1989 and for stage 2 in 1992. Results from both stages have been published in a variety of publications. This book reports about a special part of the study. Student achievement and school processes come into being in the context of the structure and the policies of national (or regional) education systems. The variety found in the CompEd results led us to ask how much might be explained by differences in these national or regional contexts. That is the reason the CompEd study took the initiative to invite the countries participating in the study, as well as some other countries that have had interesting developments in the domain of educational computers, to write a chapter describing their policies and practices regarding computers in education.

In this context, tasks are considered the "transmission belts" to implement the reformed educational standards. In her dissertation the author takes a view on the systematic analysis of task characteristics as a method to inspect the degree of tasks' cognitive requirements. The theoretical-conceptual part of the dissertation gives a psychological and didactical justification of the principles underlying the tasks' cognitive requirement. The effects are analysed in two empirical studies. The first study takes a look on the basis of accounting tasks from Chinese vocational school textbooks, using the structuring content analysis (Mayring, 2008). The second empirical study inspects accounting teachers' perceptions and judgments by interviews. Based on the results, the author develops suggestions for the use of the concept of tasks' cognitive requirement in the didactic training of (prospective) teachers at commercial schools.
