Book excerpt: In light of growing environmental and economic concerns, there is a motivated effort to mimic the two-electron reactivity of precious transition metal complexes using more abundant, affordable, and non-toxic first row transition metals. The main challenge in this effort is that more sustainable first row transition metals do not readily undergo two-electron redox processes, which comprise many industrially relevant catalytic mechanisms, instead preferring to participate in one-electron reactions. One of several ways the Thomas group has approached this challenge is by tethering a Lewis acidic early metal to an electron-rich late metal via a bifunctional phosphinoamide ligand framework, allowing access to highly reduced late metal centers that have been shown to more favorably undergo two-electron redox processes. This thesis explores how the electron-donating properties of the phosphinoamide ligand impact the structure and reactivity of a novel series of bis(phosphinoamide) Zr/Co complexes. This series employs a more electron-donating iPrNPiPr2- ligand, as opposed to the XylNPiPr2- ligand previously featured in the group’s bis(phosphinoamide) Zr/Co systems. The relative electron density at the cobalt center is qualified using multiple spectroscopic and computational methods, and structural comparisons are made between analogous Zr/Co complexes bearing different ligands. These data are used to determine how increasing the electron-donating ability of the bis(phosphinoamide) framework impacts the thermodynamics of bond activation and the overall structure-reactivity relationship of Zr/Co complexes.

Book excerpt: There has been an accelerated increase in demand to develop catalysts for renewable energy chemistry, targeting small molecule activation reactions such as N2 fixation, CO2 reduction, and O2 reduction for either harnessing energy or improving the efficiency of energy consumption. Bimetallic complexes recently received strong interest as potential catalyst candidates owing to the unique advantages provided by their multinuclear cores. Particularly, multinuclear cores are designed to process multi-electron redox chemistry that is a prerequisite to small molecule activation, especially when using earth-abundant metal sources to construct catalysts that would allow the development of catalytic performance that is competitive to or even superior to that of expensive and toxic noble metal catalysts that are currently dominating the field. Studying fundamental questions related to bimetallic chemistry, such as metal-metal bonding interactions and metal-substrate interactions has been a focus to help understand metal-metal cooperativity and bimetallic reaction mechanisms. This dissertation is dedicated to the discussion of our recent structural and reactivity studies of C3-symmetric Zr/Co heterobimetallic complexes supported by a tris(phosphinoamide) ligand framework. The small molecule activation capabilities of tris(phosphinoamide) Zr/Co complexes will be discussed. Additionally, organic substrate activations conducted by Zr/Co complexes will be probed, in an effort to both understand their small molecule activation mechanisms, as well as to explore the application of bimetallic complexes in novel reactions to generate value-added products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a search for a fundamental understanding of supported catalysts, supported metal catalysts with essentially molecular structures were synthesized by anchoring organometallic precursors with well-defined structures to uniform and highly crystalline supports. The supports include zeolite NaY, zeolite HSSZ-53 and MgO. The metals include osmium, iridium, and gold, and the corresponding precursors were Os3(CO)12, Ir(C2H4)2(acac), Ir(CO)2(acac), and Au(CH3)2(acac). Characterization of the supported species at the atomic scale was carried out by X-ray absorption (XAS) and infrared (IR) spectroscopies used in tandem with aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The transformations of these species were tracked, with the data taken under (a) working conditions of a catalyst (during a reaction), (b) in the presence of a reactive atmosphere, or (c) under the influence of the electron beam in the STEM. Time-resolved spectra and images demonstrate the structural changes in the catalysts involving the nuclearity of the metal species, the metal-ligand and metal-support interactions. Fully resolved structures were correlated with catalytic activity for ethylene hydrogenation and CO oxidation reactions. Influence of channel confinement and cage dimensions of a zeolite on cluster formation were investigated starting with Ir1 species. First steps of cluster formation giving Ir2 and Ir3 were tracked in 1D channels of zeolite HSSZ-53 and formation of Ir6 species in 3D supercages of zeolite NaY was examined. Moreover, last steps of cluster growth were revealed by the discovery a sinter-resistant catalyst with a critical diameter of ~1 nm (Ir~40). Characterization with single atom sensitivity help pinpoint atomically dispersed gold catalytic sites on zeolite NaY during CO oxidation and site-isolated Os(CO)2 species formed by fragmentation of Os3 carbonyls on MgO surface. The results show how fundamental understanding can guide the design of catalysts incorporating metal atoms in nanoscale spaces or on surfaces and help unravel the transport of metal atoms and characterize the bonding sites for catalytic species.

Book excerpt: With an enormous velocity, olefin polymerization has expanded to one of the most significant fields in polymers since the first industrial use about 50 years ago. In 2005, 100 million tons of polyolefins were produced - the biggest part was catalyzed by metallorganic compounds. The Hamburg Macromolecular Symposium 2005 with the title "Olefin Polymerization" involved topics such as new catalysts and cocatalysts, kinetics, mechanism and polymer reaction engineering, synthesis of special polymers, and characterization of polyolefins. The conference combined scientists from different disciplines to discuss latest research results of polymers and to offer each other the possibility of cooperation. This is reflected in this volume, which contains invited lectures and selected posters presented at the symposium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rudolph Mossbauer discovered the phenomenon of recoil-free nuclear resonance fluorescence in 1957-58 and the first indications of hyperfine interactions in a chemical compound were obtained by Kistner and Sunyar in 1960. From these beginnings the technique of Mossbauer spectroscopy rapidly emerged and the astonishing versatility of this new technique soon led to its extensive application to a wide variety of chemical and solid-state problems. This book reviews the results obtained by Mossbauer spectroscopy during the past ten years in the belief that this will provide a firm basis for the continued development and application of the technique to new problems in the future. It has been our aim to write a unified and consistent treatment which firstly presents the basic principles underlying the phenomena involved, then outlines the experimental techniques used, and finally summarises the wealth of experimental and theoretical results which have been obtained. We have tried to give some feeling for the physical basis of the Mossbauer effect with out extensive use of mathematical formalism, and some appreciation of the experimental methods employed without embarking on a detailed discussion of electronics and instrumentation. However, full references to the original literature are provided and particular points can readily be pursued in more detail if required.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the 1950s, Ziegler and Natta discovered that simple metallorganic catalysts are capable of transforming olefins into linear polymers with highly ordered structures. This pioneering discovery was recognized with a Nobel Prize in 1963. In the 80s and 90s, the development of molecular defined metallocenes led to a renaissance for non-polar polyolefin materials. Designer catalysts allowed a greater precision in defining properties of the material. The past 10 years have seen the discovery of new catalysts based on late transition metals, which allow the combination of polar monomers with non-polar olefins and thus lead to innovative materials. Here, the world's leading authors from industry and academia describe the latest developments in this fascinating field for the first time in such comprehensive detail. In so doing, they introduce readers systematically to the basic principles and show how these new catalysts can effectively be used for polymerization reactions. This makes the book an ideal and indispensable reference for specialists, advanced students, and scientists of various disciplines dealing with research into catalysts and materials science.
