Book excerpt: Cardiothoracic surgery is the medical specialty involved with the surgical treatment of organs within the thorax, principally, the heart, lungs, chest wall, esophagus and diaphragm. There are three major subspecialties of cardiothoracic surgery, namely, cardiac, thoracic and congenital. There are a variety of cardiothoracic surgeries and procedures. Angioplasty is a commonly used surgical procedure, which helps in the restoration of healthy blood flow to the heart. This is done by reopening the arteries that are narrowed by the accumulation of fatty plaque. Stent placement is another cardiothoracic surgical method that involves the placement of a small metal coil or tube to hold open the narrowed arteries. Some other surgical procedures and device implantations under cardiothoracic surgery are coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), heart valve repair or replacement, ventricular assist devices, heart transplant, carotid surgery, pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). This book is a valuable compilation of topics, ranging from the basic to the most complex advancements in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. It consists of contributions made by international experts. The book will serve as a valuable source of reference for graduate and post graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few of the great stories of medicine are as palpably dramatic as the invention of open-heart surgery, yet, until now, no journalist has ever brought all of the thrilling specifics of this triumph to life. This is the story of the surgeon many call the father of open-heart surgery, Dr. C. Walton Lillehei, who, along with colleagues at University Hospital in Minneapolis and a small band of pioneers elsewhere, accomplished what many experts considered to be an impossible feat: He opened the heart, repaired fatal defects, and made the miraculous routine. Acclaimed author G. Wayne Miller draws on archival research and exclusive interviews with Lillehei and legendary pioneers such as Michael DeBakey and Christiaan Barnard, taking readers into the lives of these doctors and their patients as they progress toward their landmark achievement. In the tradition of works by Richard Rhodes and Tracy Kidder, King of Hearts tells the story of an important and gripping piece of forgotten science history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the most technically demanding but life-changing techniques in the treatment of conotruncal heart defects, as many repairs are performed on small infants. Each chapter reviews surgical anatomy (the anatomical classification that the surgeon is using), preoperative evaluation (the surgeon's check list before doing the surgery), and surgical techniques (clear drawings and videos, minimal text). It is an essential reference book for newly qualified surgeons when performing these complex cases. Conotruncal heart defects (CTHDs) are a group of complex congenital anomalies of the cardiovascular system that are a major cause of symptomatic cardiac disease at birth. They may account for up to 30% of all congenital cardiac anomalies. In many instances, patients with CTHD are symptomatic in the first days or weeks of life, with severe cyanosis or heart failure, requiring surgery in the neonatal period or in infancy. Most CHTD are today diagnosed in utero by fetal ultrasound. CHTDs are usually defined as malformations of the cardiac outflow tracts and presumably result in disturbance in the development of the cono-truncal apparatus of the embryonic heart, as well as of the primitive aortic arches. CTHDs include the following: truncus arteriosus, tetralogy of Fallot, double outlet right (or left) ventricle, transposition of the arteries, corrected transposition of the great arteries, interrupted aortic arch. The outcomes of CHTD surgery has considerably improved in the past 20 years, with quite fascinating innovations.
