Book excerpt: A collection of informative and inspirational thoughts of many of the nation’s leaders in research, medicine, education, senior care and advocacy around the subject of Alzheimer’s disease. The Future of Alzheimer's features candid views from experts on how they respond today to someone on the difficult journey of Alzheimer’s and what they believe is the future hope for a cure. More than 20 experts in the field of Alzheimer's research or caretakers are asked two key questions: What advice would you give to the loved ones of someone who is newly diagnosed? Do you think there will be a cure, and if so, when? Their answers help provide context and hope for patients, caretakers and loved ones looking for answers by providing helpful insights on the disease and what's to come. Alzheimer's prevalence in the US makes it the 6th leading cause of death, killing more than half a million people, mainly seniors, every year and experts believe this number will only grow. The Future of Alzheimer's seeks to make this and other forms of dementia less of the devastating diagnosis it is now for all of those people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has witnessed a revolution in the attempts of scientists to under stand the molecular basis of dementia. Although dementia, as defined by global cogni tive decline involving gradual loss of memory, reasoning, judgment, and orientation, presents most commonly in the form of Alzheimer's disease (AD), an assortment of other less common disorders, such as prion and Pick's disease, can also lead to symp toms that are similar to those observed in patients with AD. The primary goal of Molecular Mechanisms of Dementia is to address the various mechanisms and multi faceted approaches currently being employed to more clearly delineate the etiological and pathogenic events responsible for the onset of dementia. Perhaps the greatest boon to obtaining a clearer understanding of the causes of AD has come from genetic and molecular biological studies carried out over the past decade. At the genetic level, it has become increasingly clear that AD is a heteroge neous disorder that can be broadly classified into two categories. "Late onset" (>60 yr) cases, which account for the vast majority of AD, genetically involve "susceptibility" genes representing risk factors for the disease (e. g. , inheritance of the 84 allele of the Apolipoprotein E gene). In many cases, the susceptibility gene can act as a "modifier" that modulates the pathogenic cascade occurring subsequent to a separate etiological event "initiating" or "causing" the disorder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dementia in the adult U.S. population is a devastating disorder that is often unrecognized or misdiagnosed in its early stages. Despite the current lack of unequivocally effective treatment, recognition of early-stage dementia may offer substantial benefits. These include avoidance of inappropriate treatment related to misdiagnosis and time for the patient and family to address issues of financial, legal, and medical care planning. This Clinical Practice Guideline is intended to help primary care providers recognize and assess Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in the early stages. Differential diagnosis is beyond the scope of the guideline; however, the guidline contains a list of resources for further clinical evaluation once probable dementia has been identified.

Book excerpt: This publication is a landmark work commemorating the centennial of Alois Alzheimer's discovery of what would be known as Alzheimer's disease (AD). The centennial of Alois Alzheimer’s original description of the disease that would come to bear his name offers a vantage point from which to commemorate the seminal discoveries in the field. It traces how the true importance of AD as the major cause of late life dementia ultimately came to light and narrates the evolution of the concepts related to AD throughout the years and its recognition as a major public health problem, with an estimated 30-40 million people affected by AD today. To identify the breakthroughs, the editors have used citation analysis, landmark papers identified by current researchers, and drew upon their own experience and insights. This process took into account the perspectives of individuals who recall the impact of findings at the time they were made, as well as of scientists today who have the advantage of hindsight in weighing the lasting influence of these findings. Because modern AD research was triggered by the seminal work of Tomlinson, Blessed, and Roth some four decades ago, it is particularly fortunate that the vast majority of these milestone authors are still with us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth in the incidence of dementia presents major challenges to global healthcare systems. As the burden of dementia in non-Western cultures grows, developing nations are expected to overtake developed nations in terms of dementia prevalence. Insights from developing nations and transcultural considerations are, nevertheless, neglected in the published literature. Dementia: A Global Approach fills this gap by integrating contemporary cross-cultural knowledge about dementia. Each section reviews the literature from the published, predominantly Western, perspective, contrasting it with empirical knowledge from non-Western cultures. Covering major clinical, epidemiological and scientific areas of interest, detailed consideration is also given to care-giving models across the world and management of patients who have migrated between regions. Enriched with personal insights from clinical experts across the globe, this is a key text for neurologists, geriatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, epidemiologists and all those responsible for managing provisions of dementia services.
