Maxwell Novel, Cynthia Freeman Gibbs delivers another evocative account of the life-altering pathway of a psychologist on a mission to control her impulsive reactions to adversity. Two months of freedom from prison have passed – but Dr. Olivia C. Maxwell is not free from the rage that landed her behind bars. Fury toward her soon-to-be ex-husband, Malcolm, is amplified by decisions he’s made about the lives of their two children, along with the announcement of his unexpected fiancée. Olivia must reckon with the impact her reckless actions have on her kids while balancing moving forward to a life without the insatiable urge for revenge. Olivia’s best friend, Savannah Menefee, is open to exploring out-of-the-box relationships. No-nonsense Savvy lowers barriers around her heart for unusual encounters to find the right man for her life – and now she’s exposed herself to a dangerous rendezvous. The redeeming power of friendship is evident in the midst of Olivia and Savvy both navigating through chaotic relationships that bring about twists, terror and possibly, destruction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of Hogg's longest and also one of his most original and daring works. Gillian Hughes's uncovering of the original manuscript in the Fales Library of New York University in August 2001 allows the editors to produce here a text that reflects Hogg's original intentions. Alongside the two main plots (the supernatural located at Aikwood Castle and the chivalric located at Roxburgh Castle) a series of embedded narratives provides the reader with, amongst other things, pictures of the traditional and timeless world of rural life in which Hogg had grown up and of early Scottish history. The name Sir Walter Scott (used through most of the manuscript) is restored and passages excised from the manuscript or omitted when the printed edition was prepared are included in the editorial apparatus. In several cases Hogg's more daringly explicit language has been brought back where the printed edition has bowdlerised or subdued the expression. The restoration of the name in particular makes explicit how much this novel represents a challenge to Scott's dominance in the portrayal of chivalry and the Middle Ages in general. Any attempt to assess Hogg as a major novelist, and in particular as a major historical novelist, must consider this edition of The Three Perils of Man.

He is best known for his novel The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner.

Book excerpt: The battlefield is new, the enemies unfamiliar, but for British agent Patrick Hyde, the stakes are as high as ever... Patrick Hyde has uncovered a conspiracy: high-tech equipment is being smuggled out of the UK with help from the KGB, and the evidence points to electronics conglomerate, Reid Group. But with Reid’s former chairman now working in Cabinet, Hyde’s accusations fall on deaf ears. Meanwhile, deep in the Namibian Bush, British ex-pat Richard Anderson stumbles upon a crashed Dakota plane. Inside, he finds a dead KGB man and stolen British electronics. He takes some as proof, sensing foul play, to send back to British Intelligence. Both Hyde and Anderson, one agent and one unofficial agent-in-place, each working on opposite sides of the globe, soon find themselves targets of the same conspiracy. The mission that connects them is big – far bigger than either of them bargained for – and their pursuers will stop at nothing to ensure it fails... A game of death under a scorching sun, Craig Thomas’ A Hooded Crow is perfect for fans of Charles Cumming and Jack Higgins.

Bundled by subject matter rather than author, the books create a compelling trilogy. "Palimpsest's eClassics series, Scottish Lost Treasures, shows us how much poorer Britain's cultural heritage would be without Scottish writers ... The best example I've seen of how curation and presentation can bring old books to new audiences" - The Observer "This strikes me as a fantastic venture, and one I hope will expand further" - Professor Willy Maley, University of Glasgow, Scotland on Sunday
