Book excerpt: Self-adhering (tacky) materials or pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) form an essential part of our everyday lives, with new applications of PSAs arising all the time across various industries. The vast majority of existing PSAs are hydrophobic rubber-like polymers, which means they don't mix well with polar molecules. However, it is precisely that quality that would be of greatest practical use in contemporary industry and medicine. This book describes innovative hydrophilic PSAs based on stoichiometric hydrogen bonded complexes of long-chain polymers (with repeating electron-donating functional groups) with complementary telechelic oligomers (with proton-donating terminal groups). These types of adhesives can be easily produced by simple mixing of parent polymers and oligomers in solutions or in melts. Unlike conventional hydrophobic adhesives, these hydrophilic adhesives are miscible with a range of chemical substances that have hydrogen bonding or ionic functional groups in their molecules. This includes numerous drugs, polyelectrolytes, electroconducting or physiologically active compounds, proteins, etc.The book shows the molecular design principles and distinctive characteristic features of various functional adhesive products based on innovative tacky polymer composites, such as:'smart' thermo-switchable adhesives adhering towards the substrates of different polarity and hardnessmussel-inspired adhesives functioning in aqueous mediatransdermal patches for enhanced drug deliverytooth whitening strips with tailored adhesion towards dental tissuesthe lack of adhesion to mucosal membranes in oral cavitymany other advanced products for medical, cosmetic and industrial applications. The number of functional polymers that can be used as parent components for producing novel adhesives is very large, suggesting that the polymer blending approach may revolutionise the adhesive industry in the coming decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives and Applications, Second Edition explains how pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) work, why they are used, and the technology used to manufacture them. This second edition features the latest developments in the field. Dr. Benedek discusses the factors that affect the rheology and special flow characteristics responsible for the adhesivity of liquid and solid PSAs. His book explores the viscoelastic behavior of PSAs, and compares them to plastics, rubbers, and polymers properties and examines the parameters that influence the conversion process of PSAs from the coating of carrier materials to the properties of the final laminate. The author covers adhesion/cohesion balance, time-temperature dependence of pressure sensitivity, chemical composition, coating properties, and coating processes affect the adhesive properties of PSA and their end products and how application-specific performance indices are used to determine the formulation and manufacture of raw materials. In addition, up-to-date coating machines, converting technology, and environmental considerations in the manufacture of PSA final products as well as industry-specific methods of testing for quality assurance and control are discussed. Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives and Applications, Second Edition combines the theoretical basis of pressure sensitivity with the practical aspects of manufacturing, testing, and use of PSAs. Readers are offered an exhaustive as well as comparative look at the engineering of plastics, adhesives, and pressure-sensitives, resulting in an indispensable, up-to-date reference for adhesive and polymer chemists and technologists.

Book excerpt: The author of the bestselling The Art of Innovation reveals the strategies IDEO, the world-famous design firm, uses to foster innovative thinking throughout an organization and overcome the naysayers who stifle creativity. The role of the devil's advocate is nearly universal in business today. It allows individuals to step outside themselves and raise questions and concerns that effectively kill new projects and ideas, while claiming no personal responsibility. Nothing is more potent in stifling innovation. Over the years, IDEO has developed ten roles people can play in an organization to foster innovation and new ideas while offering an effective counter to naysayers. Among these approaches are the Anthropologist—the person who goes into the field to see how customers use and respond to products, to come up with new innovations; the Cross-pollinator who mixes and matches ideas, people, and technology to create new ideas that can drive growth; and the Hurdler, who instantly looks for ways to overcome the limits and challenges to any situation. Filled with engaging stories of how Kraft, Procter and Gamble, Safeway and the Mayo Clinic have incorporated IDEO's thinking to transform the customer experience, The Ten Faces of Innovation is an extraordinary guide to nurturing and sustaining a culture of continuous innovation and renewal.

Book excerpt: The objectives of rubber compounding may be essentially defined as providing optimised performance and processability, generally at minimum cost, by the incorporation of non-rubber ingredients. Optimised performance in this context refers not only to mechanical properties but also, for example, resistance to bacteria or particular chemicals. In some applications a rubber may also need to be coloured, or bonded to another material, and further ingredients may be required. For many years, rubber compounding was largely empirical and frequently described as a black art. Today it is practised predominantly on the basis of scientific principles elucidated over years of study and is still the subject of intensive research. In this new report Claude Hepburn reviews the following range of compounding ingredients, considering the range of materials available, their particular actions and recent interesting advances: Process and extender oils; Process aids and surfactants; Coupling agents and adhesion promoters; Fire retardants, bactericides and blowing agents, colourants and odourants. An additional indexed section containing several hundred abstracts from the Polymer Library provides many more examples of novel materials and their applications.

Its comprehensive, rigorous and yet accessible approach originates from the authors’ considerable experience mentoring students as they turn their technological ideas into real-life business ventures. . The text is separated into three parts providing a roadmap for successful entrepreneurial projects: Part I focusses on how to create your venture, turning technology into businesses and how to link together entrepreneurship and innovation Part II shows you how to grow your venture and make it profitable, looking at the early development of academic spin-outs and how to adapt your technology to the customers’ needs. Part III takes you through the day-to-day running on your business; whether to adopt a contingency or contextual approach, how to develop new products and services and alternative options for growth. With a wide range of practical steps, lists of things to consider and guidelines on how to turn your technology based ideas into a successful business, this text will be essential for all non-business students who need to understand entrepreneurship, management and innovation. It will also prove a useful introduction to all Masters-level students taking these subjects in business schools.

With the improvement of technology every day, we meet new and complicated devices and methods in different fields. Quality control explains the directed use of testing to measure the achievement of a specific standard. It is the process, procedures and authority used to accept or reject all components, drug product containers, closures, in-process materials, packaging material, labeling and drug products, and the authority to review production records to assure that no errors have occurred. The quality which is supposed to be achieved is not a concept which can be controlled by easy, numerical or other means, but it is the control over the intrinsic quality of a test facility and its studies. The aim of this book is to share useful and practical knowledge about quality control in several fields with the people who want to improve their knowledge.
