Book excerpt: Kate Beecher, a young woman from Boston, looks ahead with a sense of restless longing to the life her family and friends expect her to embrace. She doesn't know what she wants, or who, until she moves with her family to the wild Montana Territory of the 1860's. Just eighteen and quietly struggling against the social constraints of the era, Kate meets a woman who fires first her imagination, and then her dreams. Jessie Forbes, a fiercely independent but touchingly tender rancher, finds in Kate the passion she had unknowingly sought all her life. This is the story of their struggle to love in a land and time as cruel as it was beautiful.

Book excerpt: Mind Platter is a compilation of reflections on life as seen through the eyes of an educator, student, and human who experienced her early days in silence. It is written in the words of a woman who came from Lebanon to Canada at the age of sixteen and experienced what it was like to have fate push her to a place where she didn't belong. It is written in the voice of every person who has felt unheard, mistreated, misjudged, or unseen. The book contains over 200 one-page reflections on topics we encounter in our everyday lives: love, friendship, hurt, inspiration, respect, motivation, integrity, honesty, and more. Mind Platter is not about the words it contains, but what the reader makes of them. May this book give a voice to those who need one, be a crying shoulder for those who yearn for someone to listen, and inspire those who need a reminder of the power they have over their lives.

Book Synopsis The Journey of Liu Xiaobo by : Democratic China
Download or read book The Journey of Liu Xiaobo written by Democratic China and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a fearless poet and prolific essayist and critic, Liu Xiaobo became one of the most important dissident thinkers in the People’s Republic of China. His nonviolent activism steered the nation’s prodemocracy currents from Tiananmen Square to support for Tibet and beyond. Liu undertook perhaps his bravest act when he helped draft and gather support for Charter 08, a democratic vision for China that included free elections and the end of the Communist Party’s monopoly on power. While imprisoned for “inciting subversion of state power,” Liu won the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize. He was granted medical parole just weeks before dying of cancer in 2017. The Journey of Liu Xiaobo draws together essays and reflections on the “Nelson Mandela of China.” The Dalai Lama, artist and activist Ai Weiwei, and a distinguished list of leading Chinese writers and intellectuals, including Zhang Zuhua, the main drafter of Charter 08, and Liu Xia, the wife of Liu Xiaobo, and noted China scholars, journalists, and political leaders from around the globe, including Yu Ying-shih, Perry Link, Andrew J. Nathan, Marco Rubio, and Chris Smith illuminate Liu’s journey from his youth and student years, through his indispensable activism, and to his defiant last days. Many of the pieces were written immediately after Liu’s death, adding to the emotions stirred by his loss. Original and powerful, The Journey of Liu Xiaobo combines memory with insightful analysis to evaluate Liu’s impact on his era, nation, and the cause of human freedom.
Download or read book Uprooted written by Tulsa and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-10 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uprooted: The Unheard Story by Tulsa Uprooted tells the story of the Bhutanese people of Nepali origin who were evicted from their homeland, through the eyes of Goshi, a native Bhutanese woman. The story follows Goshi from her childhood in a small village in Bhutan, to her adolescence and schooling, and finally into her adulthood, all the while giving insight and understanding into the events leading up to the exile of the Bhutanese people. She tells of their endurance and resilience, challenges and hardships; of how over a 100,000 of these people were marginalized from being part of a multicultural society and forced to flee the only home they knew to live as refugees in camps in eastern Nepal for seventeen years starting late 1980s. It is the tale of youths trying to blend and fit, torn between conformity and deviance, and the adults' struggle to adjust in a different socio - cultural environment. After being resettled to various countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Netherland, Norway and the United Kingdom in 2008, these people were forced to overcome a host of challenges that come with settling in a completely new environment. Most importantly, this book helps in bringing out the refugees' side of the story on how a large portion of the Bhutanese population were evicted almost overnight, and what stress the people went through when displaced from the only home known to them. About the Author Born the fifth of ten children, Tulsa was raised in Dagapela of Southern Bhutan by her farmer parents. She is one among the thousands of Bhutanese of Nepali origin, who were uprooted from their home and hearth. Having fled the country in January 1992, she lived in exile in Nepal for seventeen years. She, her husband, and their two children have since resettled and have been residents of the United States of America here since September 2008. Her passion for writing, along with her specializations in Sociology and Political Science, allowed her to write this book. She hopes this book will be of special interest to not only the whole former refugee community now scattered across the world, but also to those responsible for relocation and settlement in America and other countries. Apart from her full-time job, Tulsa enjoys reading, cooking, listening to music, yoga, and occasional knitting, as well as spending time with the community elders to converse in English, the language of their new home.
