Book excerpt: We show that the initial-state interactions from gluon exchange between the incoming quark and the target spectator system lead to leading-twist single-spin asymmetries in the Drell-Yan process H[sub 1]H[sub 2][sup[up-arrow]][yields][ell][sup+][ell][sup -]X. The QCD initial-state interactions produce a T-odd spin-correlation[rvec S][sub H[sub 2]][center-dot][rvec P][sub H[sub 1]] x[rvec Q] between the target spin and the virtual photon production plane which is not power-law suppressed in the Drell-Yan scaling limit at large photon virtuality Q[sup 2] at fixed x[sub F]. The single-spin asymmetry which arises from the initial-state interactions is not related to the target or projectile transversity distribution[delta]q[sub H]. The origin of the single-spin asymmetry in[pi]p[up-arrow][ell][sup+][ell][sup -] is a phase difference between two amplitudes coupling the proton target with J[sub p][sup z]=[+-] 1/2 to the same final-state, the same amplitudes which are necessary to produce a nonzero proton anomalous magnetic moment. The calculation requires the overlap of target light-front wavefunctions with different orbital angular momentum:[Delta]L[sup z]= 1; thus the SSA in the Drell-Yan reaction provides a direct measure of orbital angular momentum in the QCD bound state. The single-spin asymmetry predicted for the Drell-Yan process[pi]p[up-arrow][yields][ell][sup+][ell][sup -]X is similar to the single-spin asymmetries in deep inelastic semi-inclusive leptoproduction[ell]p[up-arrow][yields][ell][prime][pi]X which arises from the final-state rescattering of the outgoing quark. The Bjorken-scaling single-spin asymmetries predicted for the Drell-Yan and leptoproduction processes high-light the importance of initial- and final-state interactions for QCD observables.

Book excerpt: We show that initial-state interactions contribute to the cos 2[phi] distribution in unpolarized Drell-Yan lepton pair production p p and p {bar p} 2!ll− X, without suppression. The asymmetry is expressed as a product of chiral-odd distributions h1{sup {perpendicular}} (x1, p{sub {perpendicular}}2) x {bar h}1{sup {perpendicular}} (x2, k{sub {perpendicular}}2), where the quark-transversity function h1{sup {perpendicular}}(x, p{sub {perpendicular}}2) is the transverse momentum dependent, light-cone momentum distribution of transversely polarized quarks in an unpolarized proton. We compute this (naive) T-odd and chiral-odd distribution function and the resulting cos 2[psi]asymmetry explicitly in a quark-scalar diquark model for the proton with initial-state gluon interaction. In this model the function h1{sup {perpendicular}} (x1, p{sub {perpendicular}}2) equals the T-odd (chiral-even) Sivers effect function f{sub 1T}{sup {perpendicular}}(x, p{sub {perpendicular}}2). This suggests that the single-spin asymmetries in the SIDIS and the Drell-Yan process are closely related to the cos 2[phi] asymmetry of the unpolarized Drell-Yan process, since all can arise from the same underlying mechanism. This provides new insight regarding the role of quark and gluon orbital angular momentum as well as that of initial- and final-state gluon exchange interactions in hard QCD processes.

Book excerpt: We examine in detail the diagrammatic mechanisms which provide the change of sign between the single transverse spin asymmetries measured in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and in the Drell-Yan process (DY). This asymmetry is known to arise due to the transverse spin dependence of the target proton combined with a T-odd complex phase. Using the discrete symmetry properties of transverse spinors, we show that the required complex phase originates in the denominators of rescattering diagrams and their respective cuts. For simplicity, we work in a model where the proton consists of a valence quark and a scalar diquark. We then show that the phases generated in SIDIS and in DY originate from distinctly different cuts in the amplitudes, which at first appears to obscure the relationship between the single-spin asymmetries in the two processes. Nevertheless, further analysis demonstrates that the contributions of these cuts are identical in the leading-twist Bjorken kinematics considered, resulting in the standard sign-flip relation between the Sivers functions in SIDIS and DY. Physically, this fundamental, but yet untested, prediction occurs because the Sivers effect in the Drell-Yan reaction is modified by the initial-state "lensing" interactions of the annihilating antiquark, in contrast to the final-state lensing which produces the Sivers effect in deep inelastic scattering.

Book excerpt: Measurements from HERMES, SMC, and Jlab show a significant single-spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive pion leptoproduction [gamma]*(q)p 2![pi]X when the proton is polarized normal to the photon-to-pion production plane. Hwang, Schmidt, and I [1] have shown that final-state interactions from gluon exchange between the outgoing quark and the target spectator system lead to such single-spin asymmetries at leading twist in perturbative QCD; i.e., the rescattering corrections are not power-law suppressed at large photon virtuality Q2 at fixed x{sub bj}. The existence of such single-spin asymmetries (the Sivers effect) requires a phase difference between two amplitudes coupling the proton target with J{sub p}{sup z} = ± 1/2 to the same final-state, the same amplitudes which are necessary to produce a nonzero proton anomalous magnetic moment. The single-spin asymmetry which arises from such final-state interactions is in addition to the Collins effect which measures the transversity distribution [delta]q(x, Q). The Sivers effect also leads to a leading-twist target single-spin asymmetry for jet production in electroproduction where the thrust axis is used to define the production plane. More generally, Hoyer, Marchal, Peigne, Sannino, and I [2] have shown that one cannot neglect the interactions which occur between the times of the currents in the current correlator even in light-cone gauge. For example, the final-state interactions lead to the Bjorken-scaling diffractive component [gamma]*p 2!pX of deep inelastic scattering. Since the gluons exchanged in the final state carry negligible k, the Pomeron structure function closely resembles that of the primary gluon. The diffractive scattering of the fast outgoing quarks on spectators in the target in turn causes shadowing in the DIS cross section. These effects highlight the unexpected importance of final- and initial-state interactions in QCD observables, they lead to leading-twist single-spin asymmetries, diffraction, and nuclear shadowing, phenomena not included in the light-front wavefunctions of the target computed in isolation. Alternatively, as discussed by Belitsky, Ji, and Yuan [3], one can augment the light-front wavefunctions by including the phases induced by initial and final state interactions. Such wave-functions correspond to solving the light-front bound state equation in an external field. Similar initial and final state interactions also lead to Sivers-type single-spin asymmetries in Drell-Yan processes and inclusive hadron reactions such as pp 1! [pi]X, and heavy quark production, processes which will be important to study in polarized proton experiments at RHIC.

Book excerpt: Straddling the traditional disciplines of nuclear and particle physics, hadron physics is a vital and extremely active research area, as evidenced by a 2004 Nobel prize and new research facilities, such as that scheduled to open at CERN. Scientifically it is of vital importance in extrapolating our knowledge of quark-gluon physics at the sub-nucleon level to provide a wider perspective of strongly interacting hadrons, which make up the vast bulk of known matter in the Universe. Through detailed, pedagogical chapters contributed by key international experts, Hadron Physics maps out our contemporary knowledge of the subject. It covers both the theoretical and experimental aspects of hadron structure and properties along with a wide range of specific research topics, results, and applications. Providing a full picture of activity in the field, the book highlights three particular areas of current research: computational lattice hadron physics, the structure and dynamics of hadrons, and generalized parton distributions. It provides a solid introduction, includes background theory, and presents the current state of understanding of the subject.

Book excerpt: The notion of transversity in hadronic physics has been with us for over 25 years. Intriguing though it might have been, for much of that time transversity remained an intangible and remote object, of interest principally to a few theoreticians. In recent years transversity and transverse-spin effects in general have grown as both theoretical and experimental areas of active research. This increasing attention has now matured into a thriving field with a driving force of its own. The ever-growing bulk of data on asymmetries in collisions involving transversely polarised hadrons demands a more solid and coherent theoretical basis for its description. Indeed, it now appears rather clear that transversity and other closely related properties play a significant role in such phenomena. As part of a Ministry-funded inter-university Research Project, this workshop was organised to gather together experimentalists and theoreticians engaged in investigating the nature of transverse spin in hadronic physics, with the intent of favouring the exchange of up-to-date theoretical and experimental ideas and news on the subject. Over 70 physicists took part and very nearly all the major experiments involved in transverse-spin studies were officially represented, as too were the main theory groups working in the field. New results and new analyses sparked many interesting and lively discussions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the theory and phenomenology of transverse-spin effects in high-energy hadronic physics. Contrary to common past belief, it is now rather clear that such effects are far from irrelevant. A decade or so of intense theoretical work has shed much light on the subject and brought to surface an entire class of new phenomena, which now await thorough experimental investigation. Over the next few years a number of experiments world-wide (at BNL, CERN, DESY and JLAB) will run with transversely polarised beams and targets, providing data that will enrich our knowledge of the transverse-spin structure of hadrons. It is therefore timely to assess the state of the art, and this is the principal aim of the volume. An outline of the book is as follows. After a few introductory remarks (Chapter 1), attention is directed in Chapter 2 to transversely polarised deeply-inelastic scattering (DIS), which probes the transverse spin structure function 2. This existing data are reviewed and discussed (for completeness, a brief presentation of longitudinally polarised DIS is also provided). In Chapter 3 the transverse-spin structure of the proton is illustrated in detail, with emphasis on the transversity distribution and the twist-three parton distribution contributing to g2. Model calculations of these quantities are also presented. In Chapter 4, the QCD evolution of transversity is studied at leading and next-to-leading order. Chapter 5 illustrates the g2 structure function and its related sum rules within the framework of perturbative QCD. The last three chapters are devoted to the phenomenology of transversity, in the context of Drell-Yan processes (Chapter 6), inclusive leptoproduction (Chapter 7) and inclusive hadroproduction (Chapter 8). The interpretation of some recent single-spin asymmetry data is discussed and the prospects for future measurements are reviewed.

Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been considerable growth in research activities related to spin phenomena in high energy physics and their theoretical interpretations. It has become clear that the spin enigma is not to be considered separately but that it is strongly related to the quark-gluon structure of hadrons and their interaction dynamics.Research on spin phenomena has now attracted a significant following of experimental and theoretical physicists who meet regularly at symposiums on the topic. This book serves as an introduction to the spin puzzles at high energies. Its main focus is on spin effects in hadronic processes and the spin structure of nucleons. The volume will be very useful for graduate students and for those working in the field of polarization physics or interested in the various aspects of strong interaction dynamics. The only book on spin phenomena in high energy physics, it fulfils the great need for an introductory volume in this area of growing interest.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a systematic pedagogical exposition of the quantitative analysis of Wilson lines and gauge-invariant correlation functions in quantum chromodynamics. Using techniques from the previous volume (Wilson Lines in Quantum Field Theory, 2014), an ab initio methodology is developed and practical tools for its implementation are presented. Emphasis is put on the implications of gauge invariance and path-dependence properties of transverse-momentum dependent parton density functions. The latter are associated with the QCD factorization approach to semi-inclusive hadronic processes, studied at currently operating and planned experimental facilities.
