Download or read book Inge's War written by Svenja O'Donnell and published by Penguin Books. This book was released on 2020 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting account of a German woman's experiences during World War II--a story not of heroism or evil, but of ordinary people caught in the gears of history--and a granddaughter's quest to uncover a family history kept hidden for seventy years Growing up in France, Svenja O'Donnell knew little of her German grandmother's past, except that she had been raised in K nigsburg, a place that no longer existed on any map. But when O'Donnell's reporting brought her near the windswept city--now known as Kaliningrad, and a part of Russia--a spur-of-the-moment phone call to her grandmother Inge opened the floodgates to a family story she could not have imagined. Over the course of nearly ten years of conversations, as well as archival research and travel across Europe, she would soon learn that behind her grandmother's facade of dull respectability lay a troubled past of passion, displacement, and betrayal. In this transporting and illuminating book, the award-winning journalist vividly reconstructs the story of Inge's life from the rise of the Nazis through the brutal postwar years: from falling in love in Berlin's underground jazz bars with a sensitive young man who was soon sent to the Eastern Front to returning to her provincial home pregnant with his child to spearheading her family's flight to Denmark as the Red Army closed in, her not-yet-two-year-old daughter--O'Donnell's mother--in tow. By walking in her grandmother's footsteps and ultimately uncovering the act of violence that finally parted Inge from the man she loved, O'Donnell tells a part of the World War II story that is less often heard: that of ordinary German women, whose stories will soon disappear from living memory.

Download or read book Inge Morath written by Justine Picardie and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Witty, playful, and effortlessly chic, Inge Morath: On Style reveals the vital forms of fashion and self-expression that blossomed into existence in England, France, and the United States in the postwar decades. The book follows the photojournalist Inge Morath (1923–2002) through intimate sessions with Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn; scenes of window-shopping on Fifth Avenue; American girls discovering Paris; the frenetic splendor of society balls; and working women—from actresses to seamstresses to writers—everywhere taking their place in the world. The photographs in On Style focus on an extraordinary period of Morath’s creativity, from the early 1950s to mid- 1960s, with a coda of work from later years. Here are the fundamental humanism, joy, and unerring eye for life’s brilliant theatricality that characterized her work and made her one of the most celebrated photographers of her time.
Download or read book Tench written by Inge Schilperoord and published by Pushkin Press. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dark and shocking psychological suspense about a man at war with himself. This is a skillful and assured debut about a deeply unsettling subject. Jonathan has returned from prison to his largely deserted, run-down neighborhood. He has returned to his mother, to his dog, to filling the hot days with walks on the dunes and caring for the fish he keeps in an aquarium in his bedroom - struggling, like him, to survive the oppressive summer heat. But there is a young girl with a chipped front tooth living next door, and feelings he thought forgotten are coming back to Jonathan. His growing obsession with Elke threatens to overwhelm his whole life, as well as hers, but he is determined to make the most of this second chance he has been given. He is determined not to let it happen again... Tench is criminal psychologist Inge Schilperoord's daring first novel: unnerving, morally complicated and utterly gripping, it moves brilliantly through true darkness.

Book Synopsis William Inge and the Subversion of Gender by : Jeff Johnson
Download or read book William Inge and the Subversion of Gender written by Jeff Johnson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by a meeting with Tennessee Williams, American playwright William Inge found success early, winning a Pulitzer for drama and an Academy Award for best screenplay. His small-town upbringing profoundly influenced his writing, and one of his major recurring themes was the traditional roles of gender. This close study of Inge's work focuses particularly on his technique of "gendermandering," patterns of gender-role reversals which Inge exploits not only for dramatic effect but also to subvert social expectations. Fully considered are stereotypes and established gender roles, especially as they were reinforced socially during the 1940s and 1950s. The author concentrates largely on material that is strictly Inge's, not adaptations or collaborations, and on work that has been published and is readily available to the general public. All major plays; a collection of his short plays; the screenplay of Splendor in the Grass (1961); and his novel Good Luck, Miss Wyckoff are covered. Some of Inge's more inaccessible material, including a few short published plays as well as some of the unpublished manuscripts held in the Inge Collection at Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas, is also addressed.

Book excerpt: Cherie was a chanteuse. She said, “I call m'self Cherie. Thass all the name ya need -- like Hidegarde. I won a amateur contest down in Joplin, Missouri, and that got me a job in a night club in Kanz City. But working in a night club ain't all roses..." Bo Decker had his picture taken by Life magazine because he was a champion professional rodeo rider. Bo had heard about women only he'd hardly ever seen one. Bo was a large, beautiful hunk of man -- but green as new grass when it came to Cherie. Bo and Cherie got together when they were stranded at a bus stop one night. Their story is one of high humor -- a mixture of brag, heartache, bluster, and the funniest tough love affair ever put on stage, screen, or between the covers of a book. It is filled with comedy, compassion and tenderness.
Download or read book A Tour of Bones written by Denise Inge and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author, academic and adventurer, Denise Inge grew up in a large and rambunctious family on the east coast of America. She crossed the Sahara, charmed snakes in Marrakech and cycled the Adirondack mountains but her latest adventure is an interior one. It starts with the discovery that her house is built on a crypt full of human skeletons. Facing her fear of these strangers' bones takes her to other charnel houses in Europe and on a journey into the meaning of bones themselves. This exploration, though it began before her diagnosis with an inoperable sarcoma, takes on a new significance when the question of living well in the face of mortality abruptly ceases to be hypothetical. A Tour of Bones is a passionate testament to the conviction that living is more than not dying, and that contemplating mortality is not about being prepared to die but about being prepared to live.
