Download or read book Information and Organizations written by Arthur L. Stinchcombe and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ambitious new work by a well-respected sociologist, Information and Organizations provides a bold perspective of the dynamics of organizations. Stinchcombe contends that the "information problem" and the concept of "uncertainty" provide the key to understanding how organizations function. In a delightful mix of large theoretical insights and vivid anecdotal material, Stinchcombe explores the ins and outs of organizations from both a macro and micro perspective. He reinterprets the work of the renowned scholars of business, Alfred Chandler, James March and Oliver Williamson, and looks in depth at corporations like DuPont and General Motors. Along the way, Stinchcombe explores subjects as varied as class consciousness, innovation, contracts and university administration. All of these analyses are distinguished by incisive thinking and creative new approaches to issues that have long confronted business people and those interested in organizational theory. A tour de force, Information and Organizations is a must-read for business people and scholars of many stripes. It promises to be a widely discussed and debated work

Book Synopsis Information Modeling of Organizations by : Vaclav Repa
Download or read book Information Modeling of Organizations written by Vaclav Repa and published by Tomáš Bruckner. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the information modeling of organizations in the widest sense possible. This term express the general meaning of the term "organizational modeling" with the light flavor of informatics practices rather than just the IS or IT view of the organization. Although the topic of the cognition of organizational structure and behavior traditionally belongs to the management theory; informatics brings to this area the necessary exactness in the shape of formal specifications and a systemic style of thinking. Informatics is a source of sophisticated techniques and tools, aimed on discovering the general regularities of the organizational structure and behavior (often called "business rules") with the ability to abstract all non-contentual aspects of the organizational system. Information technology, on the other hand, is a key enabler of organizational changes as it is established in all literature mentioning the theory of business reengineering. Consequently, the well designed Information System must be a clear picture of all substantial aspects of the organization (both the structural and the behavioral ones). Information modeling aims to create the view of the organization which is, on the one hand independent of any non-contentual aspect (including the information technology at first); on the other it is fully consistent with following the process of the development of the Information System (i.e., the infrastructure in general). The book introduces the methodology for modeling the business system based on two complementary views which covers both ontology and business process model of the organization using standard languages UML and BPMN and including tools for ensuring the consistency of both models. The book also outlines the original methodology for service-oriented building of the process managed organization and discusses the problem of the process-oriented management in the field of public administration.

Alistair Mutch draws on a wide range of literature spanning the disciplines of business, management, information management, and information systems. Managing Information and Knowledge in Organizations distinguishes itself by: taking a process-based approach centered around the notion of information literacy giving more attention to issues of data and information than other texts emphasizing the importance of technology while continuing to stress the centrality of social and organizational factors placing issues of organizational and national culture in a broader politico-economic context. Featuring such useful features as chapter objectives, mini-cases, chapter summaries, and suggestions for further reading, this text is ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in knowledge management, information management, and management of information systems courses and modules.

Book Synopsis Information Technology and Organizations : Strategies, Networks, and Integration by : Brian P. Bloomfield
Download or read book Information Technology and Organizations : Strategies, Networks, and Integration written by Brian P. Bloomfield and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1997-03-27 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the ways in which organizations design, build and use information technology systems. In particular it looks at the interaction between these IT-centred activities and the broader management processes within organizations. The authors adopt a critical social science perspective on these issues, and are primarily concerned with advancing theoretical debates on how best to understand the related processes of technological and organizational change. To this end, the book examines and deploys recent work on power/knowledge, actor-network theory and critical organization theory. The result is an account of the nature and significance of information systems in organizations which is an alternative perspective to pragmatic and recipe-based approaches to this topic which dominate much contemporary management literature on IT.
Book Synopsis Organizations and Communication Technology by : Janet Fulk
Download or read book Organizations and Communication Technology written by Janet Fulk and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1990-03-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizations and Communications Technology is must reading for those interested in the relation of communication technology to organizational form and function. The book does what many such collections do not do: It presents in a complementary--if not totally unified--fashion a variety of perspectives on and answers to questions raised about the essential nature, determinants, and effects of the organization-communication technology interface. Such coherence in theme and structure is not accidental; rather, it derives from the editors′ commitment to a robust theoretical foundation in which to ground past and future research. . . . They have succeeded brilliantly in their efforts to focus substantive scholarship on theory building in a data-rich but theory-poor field. The result is a work that will no doubt be a classic. The reader who makes the commitment to mine its essays will not be disappointed. --Journal of Business and Technical Communication "As a summary of the field, this collection of theoretical essays succeeds on two main counts. . . . First, it brings together in one volume writers whose recent work has been widely cited and discussed throughout the literatures of information science, communication, management, and technology studies. Second, the book presents some exciting theoretical ideas about the relationship between communication technologies and social behavior that are applicable beyond the organizational setting. . . . On the whole, this book is a fine overview that updates and lends structure--′organizes′--this evolving literature for a diverse audience." --Journal of Communication "The editors . . . argue convincingly that the study of human and organizational aspects of communications technology suffers from a glut of data and a deficiency of theory. The objective of the book becomes one of starting the process of developing a corpus of theory that will integrate the knowledge we have. Overall, the book achieves this objective well, with the gratifying addition that there are also plenty of practical recommendations of immediate value to the practitioner. . . . This is an ambitious book and given the importance of the topic this is inevitable. It is aimed at a broad range of disciplines. It is unashamedly theoretical in its approach yet contains a good deal of immediate practical importance. My own prediction . . . suggests that this book will be regarded as a milestone from which future progress will be measured." --The Occupational Psychologist "Communications technology offers a wonderful springboard for much broader considerations of how people in organizations and behavior within them. Worthwhile . . . engaging." --Academy of Management Review "Will interest any business communication scholar concerned with the ways organizations are affected by new technologies. . . . Provide[s] a wealth of stimulating ideas." --Journal of Business Communication "Organizations and Communications Technology is an attempt to provide a foundation for theory development on information technology in organizations by delegating the task to a set of competent researchers and theorists. Given the dearth of theory development in the field such a strategy makes some sense. Because of (its) diversity, organizations, communications, and management information systems scholars should all find something of interest." --Administrative Science Quarterly How do technology and organization interact to shape organizational structures and processes? What organizational, political, and social processes constrain technological development? What forces shape the articulation of organizational and technological systems? Answering these and other pivotal questions, this powerful volume centers on the role of theory for advancing our knowledge of communication technology in organizations at several levels: micro, group, and macro. A distinguished team of contributors examines a richly diverse group of topics, including telecommunications, communication networks and new media, the use of group decision support systems, and discretionary databases, to name but a few. Organizations and Communication Technology offers nothing less than a fresh foundation for research and management practice. As such, it is essential reading for scholars, practitioners, and students in the fields of management studies, communication science, organization studies, and policy studies.
