In recognition of the value of both culture-specific and culture-general information about the vocational psychology of racial and ethnic minorities in the United States, the book has a dual focus. The first eight chapters are devoted to culture-specific information about career development and vocational behavior. The final two chapters synthesize and integrate the materials presented in the eight culture-specific chapters. The text has been divided into three sections. The first section focuses on career theory and research with racial and ethnic minorities. It consists of a review of the relevance and utility of various career theories and models from mainstream vocational psychology to our understanding of the vocational behavior and career development of racial and ethnic minorities -- African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and American Indians. These chapters also summarize other theories from ethnic minority psychology that add to our understanding of minority career development. Finally, they review the existing empirical literature on the career development of these groups and provide a critique of this literature with recommendations for future research. The second section focuses on assessment and intervention with racial and ethnic minorities. The inclusion of the assessment dimension is very important because assessment is such a large and significant component of the career counseling process with these groups. The chapter authors offer guidelines and recommendations for providing career interventions with racial and ethnic minorities. In presenting these guidelines, they also address some of the cultural factors unique to each group that may serve either as facilitators or as inhibitors in the career counseling process. The third section includes commentaries, suggestions, reactions, and syntheses of the previous sections from scholars in the field of vocational psychology. These authors identify and examine the common principles, problems, and themes running across the chapters, and offer suggestions for advancing the field of racial and ethnic minority vocational psychology. This book will become both a valuable source of current information about the vocational psychology of racial and ethnic minorities as well as an inspiration for future research into the career development and vocational behavior of these culturally different individuals.

Book excerpt: The number of Native Americans entering college is higher now than it has been over the past 40 years; however, the degree completion rate has been less than half that of White students. This research study was a bounded case study of Native American students enrolled in the teacher education program. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to identify the perceived factors influencing the retention rate of Native American college students. Some of the theoretical models that explain why students stay or leave an institution before earning a college degree look more toward explaining this phenomenon in a quantitative analysis, although some of the methods can be applied to a qualitative case study. Some traditional theories on student retention emphasize the importance of students' backgrounds and positive encounters with other ideas and people (Guillory, 2008). The data collection procedures included interviewing participants, taking field notes, and reviewing documents and federal initiatives. From the data analysis, major themes and topics emerged, which included (a) cultural identity, (b) the institution, (c) factors for success, and (d) barriers to success. The findings of this study signify the need for higher education to incorporate Native American cultural aspects into their programs. The needs of Native American students are complex and require administrators, faculty members, and students in higher education to get involved. The retention rate of Native American students will remain low unless more attention is given to the financial, academic counseling, mentoring, spiritual, and relational aspects of college life.

Book excerpt: This Indigenous study is a Native American researcher’s exploration into the lived experience of four male Northern Arapaho undergraduate college students’ transition, retention, and completion to graduation. College graduation rates among Native American (NA) college students are the lowest of all ethnic groups in the nation (Flynn et al., 2012; Shotton et al., 2007). The purpose of this research project was to focus on educational history, help-seeking, counseling, acculturation and theoretical perspectives of Native American students in postsecondary education. The limited availability of qualitative research focuses on the negative aspects of NA students (Montgomery, et al., 2000). This research study offered a more strength- based perspective looking at how reservation raised students are successful in college. Through the theoretical lenses of Tribal Critical Race Theory ([TribalCrit] Brayboy, 2006), the current study examined a group of NA men who completed their undergraduate degrees within the past 30 years at the University of study. Data was collected from conversational indigenous storytelling interviews, and participation in a focus group/talking circle. This study detailed and analyzed how these men successfully completed their college education at a predominantly non- Native university. The question this study addressed is: This study identifies the success factors of these four collaborators, creating a Warrior Scholar Northern Arapaho academic profile. How do successful college male graduates of the Northern Arapaho tribe feel about their time at the University of Wyoming, a postsecondary Predominantly non-Native Institution? This study identifies the success factors of these four collaborators, creating a Warrior Scholar Northern Arapaho academic profile. This study examined the lived positive experiences of successful college completion of four male NA tribal members from the Reservation. Book excerpt: The issue of Indigenous identity has gained more attention in recent years from social science scholars, yet much of the discussions still centre on the politics of belonging or not belonging. While these recent discussions in part speak to the complicated and contested nature of Indigeneity, both those who claim Indigenous identity and those who write about it seem to fall into a paradox of acknowledging its complexity on the one hand, while on the other hand reifying notions of ‘tradition’ and ‘authentic cultural expression’ as core features of an Indigenous identity. Since identity theorists generally agree that who we understand ourselves to be is as much a function of the time and place in which we live as it is about who we and others say we are, this scholarship does not progress our knowledge on the contemporary characteristics of Indigenous identity formations. The range of international scholars in this volume have begun an approach to the contemporary identity issues from very different perspectives, although collectively they all push the boundaries of the scholarship that relate to identities of Indigenous people in various contexts from around the world. Their essays provide at times provocative insights as the authors write about their own experiences and as they seek to answer the hard questions: Are emergent identities newly constructed identities that emerge as a function of historical moments, places, and social forces? If so, what is it that helps to forge these identities and what helps them to retain markers of Indigeneity?
