Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, University of Ghana, Legon, language: English, abstract: In Ghana, information about social media influences on adolescent users' behaviour is dearth. Any empirical assessment of social media influences on adolescent mental health is largely lacking. Furthermore, there is limited or no policy or legal framework regarding access and use of social media platforms in Ghana. More so, most of the few empirical studies on social media usage in Ghana have focused on access, purpose, benefits and risks and impacts on academic performance of tertiary, secondary and basic school students. It is against this backdrop that the current study comes to examine the actual influences of social media on adolescent mental health and overall policy implications in Ghana. The researcher examines the trend in social media use, the main impacts of social media use on adolescents and major influences of social media use on mental health of adolescents in Ghana. The study will contribute immensely to existing knowledge on social media use among Ghanaian youth. The results may also inform national policy on effective and responsible use of social media in order to mitigate associated risks of social media use on Ghanaian adolescents. The current systematic review aims to better understand factors that influence the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents, The research involved the use of databases; Medline, PsycINFO, SSCI, CINAHL, and Embase. Inclusion criteria for the literature review included peer-reviewed articles that measured social media use among youth and that had outcomes variables related to psychological health problems like anxiety, mental distress or depression. As such, from a total of 3,307 unique articles found,14 studies qualified, where 13 of them were transverse study. Four themes were identified: (1) Time spent on social media, (2) Type of social media activity, (3) Personal investment, and (4) Addiction. The review showed a connection between all the themes to mental health problems. Nonetheless, some limitations exist because of methodological restrictions of transverse study design, sampling, and measures. Future research on the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents (i.e., depression, anxiety, and psychological distress) should include qualitative methods, along with longitudinal study designs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental health disorders and suicide rates are at an all-time high in adolescents aged 11-19. In addition to the increase in mental health disorders, there has been a massive increase in adolescents using social media platforms. With the proliferation of social media, it is necessary to determine the effects it is having on adolescent users to determine if this could be a cause of increasing issues with mental health. As mental health in adolescents deteriorates and social media use rises, it's possible they may be correlated with one another. This study aims to find out if social media frequency and mental health are associated. The study was conducted using quantitative research with primary data collected via survey. The participants and setting included Adolescents ages (11-19) enrolled in an after school program and have voluntarily opted into the study with parent permission. Data collection was implemented through a single survey which includes questions on mental health and social media use. The analytic approach used was Quantitative research analyzed using SPSS. The Budget and Resource Management was self-funded and conducted. The study found that 31% of adolescent participants had differing levels of possible depression. Additionally, the study found that 88.1% of participants had some form of social media, and 69% of participants spent more than 2 hours a day on social media. However, the study results failed to reject the null hypothesis such that, for this study, social media's effect on mental health was not significant. The study suggests no correlation between those who use social media more frequently and those who struggle with mental health. With the proliferation of social media, it is still vital for research and advocacy on social media use and mental health disorders.

Drawing on interviews with young people it discusses how adults can have open and inquiring conversations with teens about both the positive and negative aspects of their use of online spaces. For most young people there is no longer a barrier between their 'real' and 'online' lives. This book reviews the latest research around this topic to investigate how those working with teenagers can use their insights into digital technologies to promote wellbeing in young people. It draws extensively on interviews with young people aged 12-16 throughout, who share their views about social media and reveal their online habits. Chapters delve into how teens harness online spaces such as YouTube, Instagram and gaming platforms for creative expression and participation in public life to improve their mental health and wellbeing. It also provides a framework for practitioners to start conversations with teens to help them develop resilience in respect of their internet use. The book also explores key risks such as bullying and online hate, social currency and the quest for 'likes', sexting, and online addiction. This is essential reading for teachers, school counsellors, social workers, and CAMHS professionals (from psychiatrists to mental health nurses) - in short, any practitioner working with teenagers around mental health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing body of research on the effects of social media usage on mental health and academic achievement. Some studies have found that excessive social media use is associated with increased feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Additionally, social media use has been linked to decreased academic performance and attention span. However, it is important to note that not all studies have found a negative impact and the relationship between social media and mental health is complex and multifaceted. Additionally, the relationship between social media and academic achievement is not clear cut, other factors such as time management, sleep and personality may influence the outcome. Social media has become an integral part of many people's lives, and it is not uncommon for individuals to spend hours each day browsing through their feeds, chatting with friends, and sharing their thoughts and experiences online. While social media can be a great way to stay connected with others, it can also have a number of negative effects on mental health and academic achievement. One of the main concerns with social media usage is that it can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. This is because social media can create a sense of comparison and inadequacy, as individuals are exposed to the highlight reels of other people's lives and may feel that their own lives are not measuring up. Additionally, social media can also be a source of cyberbullying, which can lead to increased feelings of isolation and social rejection. These education programmes sensitize the students about the problems related to adolescence as the adolescent development theories form the base of these. Such adolescence education programmes should include interpersonal relationships, life skills education, career counseling, rights and duties, personality development programmes, awareness programmes on drug abuse, sexual abuse and mental health issues apart from their curricular and co-curricular activities. It is important to note that not all studies have found a negative impact, and the relationship between social media and mental health is complex and multifaceted. Many people use social media in a positive and healthy way, and it can be a great way to stay connected with friends and family and to share information and support. Additionally, some studies suggest that social media can be beneficial to mental health when used in certain ways, such as seeking social support, sharing personal information, and engaging in activities that promote self-esteem. Education enriched with ICT integration, plays significant role in fostering mental health of adolescents that in turn contributes to excel in academics in this era of digitalization. We can notice a paradigm shift in the current system of education in order to cater to the needs of the society driven by the netizens. The focus of modern education system is not only imparting knowledge that creates intellects; it also is striving to create healthy individuals who are capable of creating their own future. Another concern with social media usage is that it can negatively impact academic achievement. This is because social media can be a major distraction, and it can be difficult for individuals to focus on their studies when they are constantly checking their notifications and messaging their friends. Additionally, social media use can also disrupt sleep patterns, which can further impact academic performance.

Book excerpt: A Surgeon General's Advisory is a public statement that calls the American people's attention to an urgent public health issue and provides recommendations for how it should be addressed. Advisories are reserved for significant public health challenges that require the nation's immediate awareness and action. This Advisory calls attention to the growing concerns about the effects of social media on youth mental health. It explores and describes the current evidence on the positive and negative impacts of social media on children and adolescents, some of the primary areas for mental health and well-being concerns, and opportunities for additional research to help understand the full scope and scale of social media's impact. This document is not an exhaustive review of the literature. Rather, it was developed through a substantial review of the available evidence, primarily found via electronic searches of research articles published in English and resources suggested by a wide range of subject matter experts, with priority given to, but not limited to, meta-analyses and systematic literature reviews. It also offers actionable recommendations for the institutions that can shape online environments-policymakers and technology companies-as well as for what parents and caregivers, young people, and researchers can do.
