Book excerpt: "Previous studies have identified Lower Granite Dam fish ladder as having as high temperature differentials during summer months. In 2008, we monitored water temperatures within the fish ladder and the passage of radio-tagged adult salmonids at Lower Granite Dam. Water temperatures in the fish ladder were cooler than in previous study years, with only five percent or less of all radio-tagged fish passing the dam when water temperatures differences between upper and lower segments of the fishway exceeded 1 °C. The warmest average monthly temperatures occurred in August and differences in temperature between the top and bottom of ladder the ladder exceeding 1 °C occurred on one day in July and one day in October. A significantly higher percentage of spring-summer Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) exited the fish ladder to the tailrace when temperatures exceeded 18 °C than when water ladder temperatures were less than 18 °C. We did not find differences in the percent of steelhead (O. mykiss) and fall Chinook salmon that exited the ladder when temperatures were greater than or less than 18 °C. Median dam and transition pool passage times were higher for all runs of radio-tagged fish when water ladder temperatures exceeded 18 °C. Most tagged fish that exited the dam to the tailrace did so after reaching the transition pool area of the ladder regardless of temperature. We found a higher percentage of fish overnighted when water temperatures were greater than 18 °C. Since 2008 was a relatively cool year, future studies may be needed to more effectively evaluate the relationship between fish passage and temperature gradients within the fish ladder at Lower Granite Dam."--Abstract.

Clabough and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Water is released from Dworshak Reservoir, Clearwater River, Idaho, during summer to improve flows for outmigrating anadromous salmonid smolts Oncorhynchus spp., and to cool summer water temperatures in the lower Snake River for smolts and returning adults. Complex mixing of Clearwater and warmer Snake River water masses results in vertical and lateral temperature gradients below the confluence of these two rivers and persists into the Lower Granite Reservoir. These gradients represent variation in the thermal environment from which adult salmonids may potentially select to regulate body temperature during upstream migration (behavioral thermoregulation). In a previous study during 2001 and 2002, 216 adult Chinook salmon O. tshawytscha and 250 steelhead O. mykiss were tagged with acoustic Multiple Array Processor (MAP) tags which indicated fish position and transmitted temperatures and depths of fish. Results indicated mean fish temperatures were cooler than mean modeled river temperatures supporting the hypothesis that fish were behaviorally thermoregulating by selecting cooler water originating from Dworshak Reservoir. In 2004, 120 adult salmon and 128 steelhead were tagged with MAP tags at Lower Granite Dam. Temperature and depth information from mobile tracked fish (89) and fish recorded on a fixed MAP receiver site (168) were analyzed and compared to fixed field temperature sites (modeled river data was not available). The results from the 2004 study were consistent with results from 2001-2, where we observed consistent evidence that fish selected and used cool water when available. Individual fish temperatures were frequently below the mean field river temperatures and decreased as individuals neared the Snake-Clearwater confluence. Comparisons of fish depth between Dworshak Dam release and non-release periods supported the hypothesis that individual fish used coolwater masses originating from Dworshak Reservoir found at deeper depths during release periods. Overall, these data support the hypothesis that upstream migrating adults use the cool water released from Dworshak Reservoir and that these releases reduce thermal stress during warm summer months."--Abstract (page iii).

Book excerpt: This original and insightful book explores and examines the impact that building mega-dams has on the human rights of those living in surrounding areas, and in particular those of indigenous peoples who are often most affected. Compiling case studies from around the world, Itzchak Kornfeld provides clear examples of how human rights violations are perpetrated and compounded, with chapters examining historical, recent and ongoing dam projects.

Book excerpt: During 2008 we operated the adult salmonid trap at Lower Granite Dam from 7 March through 25 November, except during a short summer period when water temperatures were too high to safely handle fish. We collected and handled a total of 20,463 steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss and radio-tagged 34 of the hatchery steelhead. We took scale samples from 3,724 spring/summer Chinook salmon O. tshawytscha for age and genetic analysis. We collected and handled a total of 8,254 fall Chinook salmon. Of those fish, 2,520 adults and 942 jacks were transported to Lyons Ferry Hatchery on the Snake River in Washington. In addition, 961 adults and 107 jacks were transported to the Nez Perce Tribal Hatchery on the Clearwater River in Idaho. The remaining 3,724 fall Chinook salmon were passed upstream. Scales samples were taken from 780 fall Chinook salmon tagged with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags and collected by the sort-by-code system.

Book excerpt: In August 1996, we PIT tagged and released 1,360 wild chinook salmon parr in the South Fork of the Salmon River and two of its tributaries in Idaho. During spring and summer 1997, the overall adjusted percentage of PIT-tagged fish from Idaho detected at six downstream dams averaged 18.3% (range 16.0 to 27.3% depending on stream of origin). Peak detections of all wild spring/summer chinook salmon smolts (from Idaho and Oregon) at Lower Granite Dam occurred during variable but increasing river flows in April. High river flows from mid-April to mid-May moved most of these fish through Lower Granite Dam, with 50 and 90% passage occurring on 24 April and 21 May, respectively. From 1989 to 1996, peak detections of wild spring/summer chinook salmon smolts were highly variable and generally independent of river flows before about 9 May at this dam; however, during these years (including 1997), peak detections of wild fish coincided with periods of peak flow at the dam from 9 May to the end of May. In both 1995 and 1996, in excess of 90% of the wild fish had migrated past Lower Granite Dam by the time peak flows occurred in June. In 1989, we observed a period of peak detections of wild fish that coincided with peak flows at the dam in June. After examining chinook salmon smolt passage timing at the dams over the last 9 years, it has become clear that flow is only one of several factors that influence passage timing. Other factors, such as annual climatic conditions, water temperature, turbidity, physiological development, variability in stock behavior, fish size, and other yet unknown conditions may equally affect wild smolt passage timing at dams. As additional environmental monitors and traps are installed in study streams, we will be able to more accurately monitor parr and smolt movements out of rearing areas and examine the relationships of these movements to environmental parameters within the streams. Mapped over time, this information will provide the basis for accurately predicting the migrational timing of different wild stocks as they migrate downstream through the hydropower system.
