Book excerpt: Chemical reactions between ions and neutral gas are very important in the interstellar medium, since they usually have much lower barriers than neutral-neutral reactions. Thus, they are more likely to take place at low temperatures. In this work, the endothermic reactions of CH2D+, H2D+, and N+ with H2 have been investigated in a temperature variable 22-pole ion trap. Under the chosen conditions inside the trap the chemical processes are comparable to those in typical astrophysical environments. At low temperatures, the reactions mentioned above depend very sensitively on the translational and internal energies of the reaction partners. This dependence can be utilized to gain information on the energy levels or the population of the internal states. Based on this sensitivity, two different types of investigations were performed in this work. High resolution spectra of CH2D+ were obtained, resulting in improved predictions for pure rotational transitions. First steps were made towards a detailed understanding of the processes in laser induced reactions, often leading to non-Gaussian line profiles. In addition, the influence of internal states on ion-molecule reactions allowed to determine the purity of para hydrogen samples and yielded insight into the reaction kinetics of the system N+ + H2.

Book excerpt: In this work, 22-pole ion trap machines have been applied to investigate protonated water clusters H+(H2O)n (n=4.10) and ionic hydrocarbons CHn+ (n=2.5) at low temperatures. Protonated water clusters H+(H2O)n play an important role in atmospheric chemistry and in interstellar space. The Taipei 22-pole ion trap machine has been applied to kinetic and spectroscopic investigations of these clusters produced from a supersonic expansion in a corona discharge source. Using low-pressure He buffer gas for collisional thermalization, refrigeration of the ion trap by liquid nitrogen allows a good control of the cluster temperature over the range 80K-350K. This method provides an accurate means of determining the dissociation energies of the cluster ions by measuring their dissociation rates as a function of temperature and calculating their internal energies from vibrational frequencies provided by density functional theory. Results of the thermochemical measurements at well-defined cluster temperatures have been given for H+(H2O)n, n=4.10. The feasibility of using the ion trap to acquire temperature-dependent infrared spectra is presented. The deuteration and abstraction reactions of small ionic hydrocarbons CHn+ (n=2.5) with H2, HD and D2 and the subsequent association processes have been explored at temperatures down to 15K in the Chemnitz 22-pole apparatus. The reactions of the investigated ionic species and their isotopic variants are important for understanding ion-molecule processes in the interstellar medium. One of the starting points of the research program was the question whether protonated methane, CH5+, is subject to H-D-exchange in collisions with HD at low temperatures. It turns out that the rate coefficient for this deuteration process is very small, whereas CH3+ deuterates with HD by three subsequent fast exchange reactions to CD3+ at a temperature of 15K. Book excerpt: Ion Mobility Spectrometry IMS as provided the US Army with capabilities for ultrasensitive detection of chemical warfare agents and this technology is undergoing continued development and refinement today as a miniaturized detector of warfare agents. The basis for response in this technology is gas phase ion chemistry at ambient atmosphere; however, no broad framework has existed for understanding this chemistry and no predictive ans interpretative capabilities have existed for mobility spectra. This has meant that a new chemical agent deployed against US soldiers could conceivably be unrecognized by existing methods. A comprehensive model for the prediction and interpretation of mobility spectra was created here and tools are available to understand and predict spectra for the first time in history of modern analytical mobility spectrometry. Predictive capabilities are rooted in assessments of ion stability, ion lifetimes, times for ion drift, temperature and moisture. Interpretative capabilities were attained through neural networks and spectral assignments succeeded on the basis of previously uncharacterized fragmentation of ions at ambient atmosphere. The results from this work demonstrated the possibility that an unknown or unfamiliar chemical can be categorized or recognized by chemical class.
