In order to implement educational policies successfully and to achieve targets, schools need highly motivated satisfied and committed teachers who are secure in their work and who are able to perform their duties to a high standard. There are numerous research studies which focused on emotions of employees in an organization and they recognized emotions as a kind of labour from the last 1970s. In the educational field also employees are treated as emotional labourer similar to the service industry. Over the last few years organizations demand the employees to hide and suppress their negative emotions for customers happiness and satisfaction because in service industry customers are assumed as a god. Like service industry school organizations also treat their students as assets for the future of the nation. Therefore, school teachers are expected to regulate their emotions during interaction with students, co-workers and supervisors. Teachers are required a wide range of emotional displays from a gentle smile to a stern face to exhibit the ideal teacher quality that meets the social expectations. In order to perform their tasks adequately and effectively in school during the interaction with students, teachers need to display and exaggerate some emotions (Ogbonna & Harris, 2004) as well as suppress their negative emotions (Ybema & Smulders, 2002) to fit in different situations. According to Zembylas (2004) school teachers are expected to express enthusiasm and cheerfulness as a way of maintaining students‟ attention. As well as sometimes they are expected to modify their disappointment into encouragement over students who do not show improvements even after being taught the same topic many times. They should also hide their anxiety or fear and give a calm and strict impression, when confronted with students who appear to disruptive and even threatening. This kind of emotional expression for wage and job is called "emotional labour". The concept of emotional labor was first proposed by Dr. Arlie Russell Hochschild (1983), who defined it as "the management of feeling to create a publicly observable facial and bodily display" (p. 7) for a wage. A basic assumption of emotional labor theory is that many jobs (e.g., customer service, healthcare, team-based work, management) have interpersonal, and thus emotional, requirements and that well-being and effectiveness in these jobs is determined, in part, by a person’s ability to meet these requirements. Since Hochschild’s initial work, psychologists, sociologists, and management scholars have developed distinct theoretical approaches aimed at expanding and elaborating upon Hochschild’s core ideas. Broadly speaking, emotional labor is the study of how emotion regulation of oneself and others influences social dynamics at work, which has implications for performance and well being in a wide range of occupations and organizational contexts. This book offers researchers and practitioners a review of emotional labor theory and research that integrates the various perspectives into a coherent framework, and proposes an agenda for future research on this increasingly relevant and important topic. The book is divided into 5 main sections, with the first section introducing and defining emotional labor as well as creating a framework for the rest of the book to follow. The second section consists of chapters describing emotional labor theory at different levels of analysis, including the event, person, dyad, and group. The third section illustrates the diversity of emotional labor in distinct occupational contexts: customer service (e.g. restaurant, retail), call centers, and caring work. This study concerns the development of an emotional labor model for the hospitality industry that aims at identifying the antecedents and consequences of emotional labor. The study investigates the impact of individual characteristics on the way emotional labor is performed; it investigates the relationships among the different ways of enacting emotional labor and their consequences, and addresses the question of whether organizational characteristics and job characteristics have buffering effects on the perceived consequences of emotional labor, which are emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction. This study involves the rigorous development of a 10 item scale, the Hospitality Emotional Labor Scale, to measure the emotional labor that employees perform. the results of the study conformed to a two-factor structure of emotional labor: emotive dissonance and emotive effort. these two dimensions tap three types of service-acting that employees perform: surface acting, deep acting, and genuine acting. The scale was used to survey 285 hotel employees. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and moderated multiple regression (MMR) were employed to examine the proposed model, as well as to test the hypotheses. It was found that both surface acting (high emotive dissonance) and deep acting (emotive effort) associate positively with job satisfaction and negatively with emotional exhaustion.
