Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume of relevant research and literature on this topic is growing but originates mainly from economists, sociologists, and political scientists; geographers have been slow to make contributions. One reason may be that geographers have been preoccupied with differentiation within the geography of production whereas this new field directs attention to the geography of consumption and a study of economies. This book aims to focus attention on the complex and inter-related problems--social, economic, political, and geographical--that come with development, placing particular emphasis on the problems which accompany attempts at industrialization. Focusing on the complex and interrelated social, economic, political, and geographic problems that attend under-development, this book presents one of the first contributions from a geographer on what has been called the most important economic problem of the modern world. Contending that industrialization is no answer for under-developed countries that are striving to maintain expanding populations and to strengthen their economy, Alan B. Mountjoy traces the distribution, causes, and problems of under-development and the difficulties with and possibilities for industrialization as an aid in solving those problems. He defines development and under-development, considers problems of industrialization (including environmental and human problems), discusses the forms industrialization takes, and analyzes the progress of industrialization in specific under-developed areas. The unique geographer's perspective and the ability of the author to select aspects of the study that most clearly reflect the problems of under-developed economies make this work a useful text and reference book for students and scholars of development, economic geography, and international relations.

Book Synopsis Industrialization and Development in the Third World by : Rajesh Chandra
Download or read book Industrialization and Development in the Third World written by Rajesh Chandra and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing countries have undergone significant industrialization in the last three decades. Yet industrial growth reveals marked spatial inequalities in terms of both country and location. The Newly Industrialised Countries have achieved spectacular growth in sharp contrast to many other countries of the South. Industrial structure has changed, moving away from labour intensive industries to more technologically advanced manufacturing. Developing countries have had considerable success in penetrating developed country markets but they are now encountering more market restrictions. The role of the government in the development of the economy is also changing. Increasingly, countries are turning towards export-orientated industrialization strategies and privatization whilst their governments are emphasising their facilitative role.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The restruturing of industrial production, the international division of labor, and continual technological change place developing countries in a global process of industrialization. This book clarifies the positive and negative aspects of this process and examines two different theoretical approaches used to achieve industrialization. The book first focuses on the international economy through examining in detail two relatively successful Third World industrializers--Brazil and South Korea, and than shifts its emphasis to the specific aspects of industrialization such as technology, gender relations, culture and the environment.

Book Synopsis How Nations Succeed: Manufacturing, Trade, Industrial Policy, and Economic Development by : Murat A. Yülek
Download or read book How Nations Succeed: Manufacturing, Trade, Industrial Policy, and Economic Development written by Murat A. Yülek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses developmental experience in different countries as well as British expansion following the industrial revolution from a developmental perspective. It explains why some nations are rich and others are poor, and discusses how manufacturing made economies flourish and spur economic development. It explains how today’s governments can design and implement industrial policy, and how they can determine economically strategic sectors to break out of Low and Middle Income Traps. Closely linked to global trade and (im)balances, industrialization was never an accident. Industrialization explains how some countries experience export-led growth and others import-led slowdowns. Many confuse industrialization with the construction of factory buildings rather than a capacity and skill building process through certain stages. Industrial policy helps countries advance through those stages. Explaining technical concepts in understandable terms, the book discusses the capacity and limits of the developmental state in industrialization and in general in economic development, demonstrating how picking-the-winner type focused industrial policy has worked in different countries. It also discusses how industrial policy and science, technology and innovation policies should be sequenced for best results.

Book Synopsis Industrialization and Globalization by : John Weiss
Download or read book Industrialization and Globalization written by John Weiss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a refreshingly accessible style John Weiss presents a survey of industrialization in developing countries since 1945, as well as a study of the predominant theories of industrial growth in the Third World. This authoritative text analyzes: * the possibility of different paths to industrialization * the dominant neoclassical view and the challenges to this orthodoxy * the importance of small scale industry * the priority of technological change to industrialization. At a time when globalization is becoming an increasingly controversial phenomenon, this book offers a powerful argument that despite potential difficulties with market access, integration with the world market offers developing countries the opportunity for future growth via industrialization.
Book Synopsis Third World Industrialization in the 1980s by : Raphie Kaplinsky
Download or read book Third World Industrialization in the 1980s written by Raphie Kaplinsky and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-26 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, this work explores the issues surrounding the industrialisation of the Third World at the beginning of the 1980s. The expectation that Newly Industrialising Countries would facilitate industrial growth via an outward-orientated strategy had begun to be the combination of growing recession, growing protectionism and the diffusion of radical microelectronics-related technical change. In addition, the high indebtedness of developing countries made them increasingly dependent on assistance from the IMF and IBRD, whose policies increased the tendency towards de-industrialisation. The papers in this volume explore all of these issues and their implication for LDC industrial strategy in the 1980s.
