Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic diversification entails a shift away from a single income source toward multiple income sources from an increasing spectrum of sectors and markets. A persistent concern for some Asian and African economies is their reliance on commodity exports and how they are exposed to the risk of export volatility and income instability. The Covid-19 pandemic and previous oil crashes have demonstrated the adverse impact on such economies. This book provides a systemic analysis of sustainable economic development through economic diversification. The book analyzes diversification and development experiences from comparative perspectives of Asia and Africa. It also investigates determinants of export diversification differentiated by commodities-dependence versus manufactured products and looks at the roles of various institutions and governance of institutions in export diversification. This book will provide policy insights into how different degrees of specialisation in exports across countries have affected outcomes in terms of living standards, economic growth and employment.

Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2020 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, , language: English, abstract: This paper aims to examine the direct and indirect effects of foreign direct investment (FDI), development assistance (DA), and International Monetary Fund credit (IMFC) on the increase of exports (EXP) in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. The study focuses on identifying the most influential factor in driving EXP, with a particular emphasis on sustainable financing strategies for export diversification and industrialization in SSA. Traditionally, SSA has relied on FDI, development assistance (DA), remittances, and international credit for financial support. However, these sources of funding are expected to decrease due to the pandemic's economic impacts. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development forecasts a significant decline in global FDI flows, with SSA facing a 25% to 40% reduction in investment flows for 2020. This underscores the urgency for SSA nations to explore sustainable financing methods for the necessary investments to boost exports. Historically, SSA countries have utilized foreign direct investment (FDI) to fund economic development, but the outcomes have often fallen short, leaving many nations in poverty. Despite SSA's wealth of natural resources, efficient resource utilization remains a challenge, and potential advantages have not translated into inclusive growth. The region also grapples with infrastructure gaps, poor investment climates, and weak governance and institutional capacities. In this context, it is imperative to consider alternative ways to finance economic growth, particularly export diversification and industrialization. Research shows that export diversification and industrialization can significantly drive economic growth, but the question of how to finance these processes effectively remains largely unexplored. In the face of declining FDI and limitations within SSA's banking system, this study investigates the direct and indirect effects of FDI, DA, and IMFC on export expansion (EXP) and, subsequently, on gross domestic product (GDP). The study delves into the mediating role of exports in various factors' impact on GDP, with the objective of identifying the most influential factor in driving export growth. Ultimately, this study aims to provide SSA leaders and policymakers with insights into innovative and sustainable financing approaches to promote export diversification and industrialization in the region.

Book excerpt: This edition analyses how trade can contribute to economic diversification and empowerment, with a focus on eliminating extreme poverty, particularly through the effective participation of women and youth. It shows how aid for trade can contribute to that objective by addressing supply-side capacity and trade-related infrastructure constraints, including for micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises notably in rural areas.

Book excerpt: Economic diversification remains at the top of the agenda for hundreds of regions around the world. From the single commodity economies of African countries and the Caribbean, to the many single industry regions of Europe and North America, as well as the oil and gas rich but volatile hydrocarbon economies. Economic diversification policies have been around for almost a century with varying degrees of success and failure. Economic Diversification Policies in Natural Resource Rich Economies takes a special interest in the policy experiences of a set of different countries that have extractive industries representing significant drivers of their economies and subsequently are significant contributors to government revenues. It explores twelve cases including upper-middle to high income economies such as Canada, Australia, Iceland and Norway, emerging economies such as Latin America, the GCC (Saudi and UAE), Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Russia, as well as the developing economy of Uganda. Each chapter provides a review of economic diversification experiences including policy environment, diversification strategies, desired outcomes, the role of government, and a critical evaluation of achievements. This book is suitable for those who study environmental economics, development economics and resource management.

Relying on oil and gas alone, however, will not produce the long-run level of growth needed to meet this potential. Reforms geared to improve the business climate, enhance competitiveness, and increase private sector participation are essential. This book examines reforms to accelerate economic diversification in the country. This involves not only modernizing and using public resources in agriculture more efficiently to increase productivity, but also transitioning of manufacturing toward high-potential exports to help the country’s industrial development and create employment opportunities. Upgrading innovation of oilfield services and improving transport and logistics are important to increase participation in the global value chains.

This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Were oil supplies everlasting and the demand for oil strong and continuous, economic diversification in the Gulf would be pointless. However oil reserves are finite and non-renewable and the world demand for oil from the Gulf region is simply not stable. Collectively the countries of the Gulf face the striking prospect that unless priorities and plans are set with care the gestation period of their economic development may be longer than the expected life of their hydrocarbon resources. This book examines just that threat. It considers the opportunities available to the Gulf states for accumulating sufficient productive capital in the non-oil sectors of their economy to offset the drawing down of oil reserves. The book pays particular attention to the possibilities of development through cooperation not only within the Gulf Cooperation Council but also within the larger Arab region and the Third World as a whole. It concludes with a critical review of the main challenges that these economies are facing and are likely to face in the near future with special emphasis on their major problems and failures. First published in 1984.
