Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial-Social Education Even these reasons would not have seemed to furnish a sufficient excuse for adding to the multitude of new books if I had not become graduallv but thor oughly convinced regarding the following points: that we are working along right lines, even if our work is crude; that our faces are toward the light; that the work is verv important and that our most thoughtful people of all classes are ready for something of this kind. Modern education has for its basis a few pedagogical principles upon which all educators now agree. It should be noted, however, that the general agree ment occurs when the principles are stated. But that when it comes to the appli cation of these same principles there is almost. As general disagreement. Even so, they may be of considerable service to the reader who cares to habituate himself to the social point of view in education. A critical sketch of three famous schools is begun in Chapter III. This is followed by descriptions of school work, which are not meant to represent perfection of either method or attainment, but which, it is believed, succeed in showing some features of the social spirit more completely than do the three examples studied in Chapters III, IV, and V. The two chapters on self-organized group work aim to show the more general features of social organization in the school. The concluding chapters of the book take up some special themes of education and attempt to show to what extent their best teaching depends upon a recognition of social facts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Instruction: A Pedagogic and Social Necessity; Together With a Critic Upon Objections Advanced The present work grew out of a reply made by him to objections raised against industrial instruction in the Synod of the Canton of Zurich, where the ques tion was up for discussion in the years 1882 and 1884. At the earnest solicitation of others, he rewrote the work, omitting local and personal matters, and giving to it a more general character. In it he has undertaken to answer all objections to industrial instruction, from whatsoever source, and to state the reasons in its favor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Education, Vol. 33: The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science; January, 1909 When the history of industrial education in this country comes to be written it will be found that, directly and indirectly, the Negro has had an important part, not only in defining its aims and shaping its methods, but in advertising its importance to the world. The first industrial school of any importance in the United States was Hampton Institute, a school founded for Negroes, at Hampton, Va. At the time this school was established, in 1868, the value of indus trial education in preparing primitive people for European civiliza tion had already been perceived by certain missionaries in Africa and elsewhere. The idea of introducing it in America, for the purpose of solving the problem which was created by the sudden liberation of nearly slaves, was first clearly conceived and carried into effect by General Samuel Chapman Armstrong, although this application of the idea was not even at that time entirely new. In 1853 Frederick Douglass drew up for Harriet Beecher Stowe a plan for an industrial college, in which shall be taught several important branches of the mechanical arts. Ere statistics are wholly inadequate to convey the value of what has been accomplished. The committee on industrial education, appointed in accordance with a resolution ado ted at the Denver convention of 1908, entered upon its duties with t e most profound regard for the work intrusted to it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education and Industrial Evolution During the nineteenth century, greater changes in manufacture, commerce and agriculture took place than during the preceding ten centuries. The military basis of civilization was hastily swept away, and replaced by industrial foundations. New classes of people and new economic interests arose, and old ones disappeared or sank in relative importance. Manners, customs and ways of living were trans formed. The ends of the earth were drawn into vital contact; the continents were moored side by side. In a word, social and industrial life was revolutionized. The qualities which count for na tional success and grandeur are no longer purely warlike or artistic; industrial capacity and skill now become absolutely essential. The warrior bows. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Industrial Worker: A Study of His Educational Needs The present delay in the setting up of Continuation Schools is a reason, not for putting on one side for a time the problems of adolescent education, but for spreading abroad, among a wider public, information and ideas of every kind that will help to bring home the urgent necessity for the continued education of the young wage-earner. The special significance of adolescence as a time of mental and moral upheaval, as a plastic period when influences for good or evil may mould the whole future of the youth, all this is a commonplace to students of educational psychology; but it is far from being recognized by the general public. No doubt financial reasons are the strongest influence at work against the extension of education. They are backed, however, by a widespread feeling that education beyond the elementary stage is, for the masses, unnecessary and often, as I have heard a City Councillor assert, useless. This attitude seems to be taken even by many persons who are really keen about the advance of education upon established lines, for example, the improvement of primary education and of secondary education for the selected few. It will be found, I think, that such persons are usually ignorant as to the special characteristics of adolescence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Problems of an Industrial Civilization This is the second in a series of books by Professor Elton Mayo, now planned to be three in number. Jointly they will present Selected aspects of over a quarter century of clinical research in industry. This research has been carried on in an effort to get a better and more fundamental understanding of human relations - that most neglected of subjects - and how to improve them. These books present also Mayo's mature reflections based on long self-training and clinical experience with individuals in a great variety of social environments before he began the study of men and women in industry: AS a result of his earlier work, when he turned his attention to industry he brought 'to his studies, zfirst, intimate, habitual, intuitive familiarity vrith things; secondly, systematic knowledge of things; and thirdly, a useful way of thinking about things, which the late Lawrence J. Henderson considered the basic necessities for objective clinical study of a new field. For about Menty years Mayo has been senior professor in the Department of Industrial Research in the Harvard Business School. The research conducted by this Department, by him and his co-workers in industry and in the School, has always been firsthand, clinical studies-of concrete industrial situations. The history of this twenty-year program has been a history of steadily increasing insight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Education: A System of Training for Men Entering Upon Trade and Commerce This series of books owes its existence to the generosity of Messrs. Hart, Schaffner & Marx of Chicago, who have shown a special interest in trying to draw the attention of American youth to the study of economic and commercial subjects, and to encourage the best thinking of the country to investigate the problems which vitally affect the business world of to-day. For this purpose they have delegated to the undersigned Committee the task of selecting topics, making all announcements and awarding prizes annually for those who wish to compete. In the year ending June 1, 1905, the following topics were assigned: 1. The cause and extent of the recent industrial progress of Germany. 2. To what is the recent growth of American competition in the markets of Europe to be attributed? 3. The influence of industrial combinations upon the condition of the American laborer.
