Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2012 UNEP Foresight Process on Emerging Global Environmental Issues primarily identified emerging environmental issues and possible solutions on a global scale and perspective. In 2013, UNEP carried out a similar exercise to identify priority emerging environmental issues that are of concern to the Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The social and economic emerging issues were also identified using the same set of criteria. At the core of the process was a SIDS Foresight Panel consisting of 11 SIDS experts (for the UNEP Panel) and 12 experts (for the UN DESA Panel) from the three SIDS regions, representing the global SIDS community and a wide range of disciplines. The process was designed to open the discussion on emerging environmental issues to a broad range of views both from the Foresight Panel and a wider community of relevant experts from across the globe. Through the Foresight Process, separate lists of 20 environmental and 15 socioeconomic emerging issues were identified and discussed in this report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive reference work gives an overview of the industrial development and current state of industrialization and deindustrialization in Asia, specifically Southeast Asia and China. It introduces typologies of industrial policies and discusses the manufacturing sector and its evolving role in the region. Designing Integrated Industrial Policies examines the integration of SMEs in global value chains and provides macro-econometric and firm-based micro-econometric analyses of (de)industrialization. This book will be a very useful reference particularly as a how-to guide on industrial promotion and designing integrated industrial policies not only for economic growth and job creation but also for "inclusive" development. It presents country cases and illustrates useful tools for industrial policy simulation and for evidence-based policy making through these concrete examples.

Book excerpt: Small Island Developing States are often depicted as being among the most vulnerable of all places to the effects of climate change, and they are a cause c?l?bre of many involved in climate science, politics and the media. Yet while small island developing states are much talked about, the production of both scientific knowledge and policies to protect the rights of these nations and their people has been remarkably slow. This book is the first to apply a critical approach to climate change science and policy processes in the South Pacific region. It shows how groups within politically and scientifically powerful countries appropriate the issue of island vulnerability in ways that do not do justice to the lives of island people. It argues that the ways in which islands and their inhabitants are represented in climate science and politics seldom leads to meaningful responses to assist them to adapt to climate change. Throughout, the authors focus on the hitherto largely ignored social impacts of climate change, and demonstrate that adaptation and mitigation policies cannot be effective without understanding the social systems and values of island societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. Islands are coming under increasing environmental and social pressure, particularly as a result of the impact of tourism. In many ways, the small scale of these islands—almost enclosed systems—provides researchers with ideal cases in which to observe this process and test theory. The Development Process in Small Island States focuses on the political security, tourism, gender issues, ecosystems, landscapes and economies of island communities. It encompasses islands at very different stages in the development process, identifying valuable common lessons and providing insights into the developmental issues particular to islands. With case studies drawn from the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and the Pacific, the book examines the position of islands as ecologically and economically vulnerable places.

Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed examination of the core areas of commercial law in common law jurisdictions across a range of South Pacific countries: Cook Islands, Fiji Islands, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Niue, Nauru, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. Commerce is an area of central importance to the South Pacific region. Although the countries in question are small it is widely acknowledged that their need to promote and develop commercial enterprise is crucial for their future sustainability. With a focus on case law and legislative provisions in individual jurisdictions, it sets out the framework of legal principles that regulate commercial activity within the South Pacific region, highlighting the common patterns and principal differences between countries of the region. It includes a discussion of PACER Plus, post-Cotonou discussions and the EU-OACPS Partnership Agreement as well as key amendments and challenges to commercial law in the region. It explores the legal structures of commerce, control and management of commercial entities, banking and transactions and termination. Importantly, the book has two new chapters, on digital currency and e-commerce in the South Pacific, reflecting the increasing use of technology in financial and commercial transactions. Offering a detailed analysis of the legal principles that regulate commercial activity within the South Pacific region, this book will be a useful resource for students, academics and practitioners working on commercial law in the South Pacific region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nauru is a small island country located in the Pacific Ocean, northeast of Australia. The country has a total land area of just 21 square kilometers and a population of approximately 12,000 people. Nauru was once one of the wealthiest countries in the region, due to its vast deposits of phosphate, a key ingredient in fertilizer. However, unsustainable mining practices and mismanagement of funds led to the depletion of the country's resources and a severe economic decline. Today, Nauru is heavily dependent on foreign aid and has struggled with issues such as high rates of obesity, diabetes, and mental health issues. The country has also faced criticism for its treatment of asylum seekers, who are detained on the island under Australia's controversial offshore processing policy. Despite these challenges, Nauru has made efforts to diversify its economy and improve living conditions for its citizens, including investing in renewable energy and expanding access to healthcare and education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a contemporary overview of the social-ecological and economic vulnerabilities that produce food and nutrition insecurity in various small island contexts, including both high islands and atolls, from the Pacific to the Caribbean. It examines the historical and contemporary circumstances that have accompanied the shift from subsistence production to the consumption of imported, processed foods and drinks, and the impact of this transition on nutrition and the rise of non-communicable diseases. It also assesses the challenges involved in reversing this trend, and how more effective social and economic policies, agricultural and fisheries strategies, and governance arrangements could promote more resilient and sustainable small island food systems. It offers both theoretical and practical perspectives, and brings together a broad range of policy areas, e.g. agriculture, food, commerce, health, planning and socio-economic policy. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable resource for a range of disciplines in a number of regional contexts, and for the growing number of scholars and practitioners working on and in small island states. It will be of particular value as the first book to examine the diversity and commonalities of island states around the globe as they confront issues of food security.
