Aiming to encompass all countries in which censorship and persecution have taken place, De Baets sketches a world map of repression that goes beyond the well-known and well-studied cases. It assembles scattered data from three types of sources: the works of censors and censored, historical and biographical dictionaries and historiographical surveys, and reports from international human rights organizations. Showing the universality of historical censorship and its infinite variety in amount and degree, the book also provides a basis for further comparative research.

In 1998, "reformasi" brought a wave of relief and euphoria. But Suharto's removal did not dispel persistent corruption, official secrecy and denial, religious and ethnic violence, and security policies leading to tragedy in East Timor, Aceh, and other regions. But the reformasi did open up new possibilities for seeing the past. What followed was a surge of discourse that challenged officially codified national history in mass media and publishing, in public policy debate, in the arts, and in popular mobilization and politics. Entitlement to Dutch citizenship, pre-migration acculturation in Dutch language and culture as well as a strong rhetorical argument ('We are here because you were there') were strong assets of the first generation. This 'postcolonial bonus' indeed facilitated their integration. In the process, the initial distance to mainstream Dutch culture diminished. Postwar Dutch society went through serious transformations. Its once lily white population now includes two million non-Western migrants and the past decade witnessed heated debates about multiculturalism. The most important debates about the postcolonial migrant communities centeracknowledgmentgement and the inclusion of colonialism and its legacies in the national memorial culture. This resulted in state-sponsored gestures, ranging from financial compensation to monuments. The ensemble of such gestures reflect a guilt-ridden and inconsistent attempt to 'do justice' to the colonial past and to Dutch citizens with colonial roots. Postcolonial Netherlands is the first scholarly monograph to address these themes in an internationally comparative framework. The Institute was founded with support from the highest political and official circles to gather scholarly information about the Dutch colonies in the East and West, not least to undergird colonial policy. KITLV played an important role in this, backed by the Ministry of Colonies and the business world. The Japanese occupation and decolonization led to a difficult process of adjustment for KITLV, which was concluded successfully. With its unique collections, publications, research and its office in Indonesia and involvement in the Caribbean, the Institute has an international reputation. This book is more than a report on 160 years of KITLV history. It is also a history of scholarly practice about the (former) colonies. Onder politieke druk liet minister van koloniën Idenburg een onderzoek instellen. De rapportage hierover--in zijn geheel opgenomen--bevestigde de misstanden. De minister hield het rapport geheim. Tegen de ergste uitwassen werden maatregelen genomen. Het nauwe samenspel van koloniale bestuurders en kapitalistische ondernemers, zo kenmerkend voor de toenmalige koloniale ontwikkelingspolitiek, ook elders in koloniaal Azië, bleef ook daarna in stand. De auteur beschrijft en verklaart het ontstaan van de plantagesamenleving en daarna, geïllustreerd met vele voorbeelden, de barre omstandigheden waaronder de contractkoelies moesten werken en leven. Tot slot worden de reacties in publieke opinie, parlement en overheid op Van den Brands aanklacht samengevat. De verschijning van dit boek in 1987 trok grote aandacht en leidde tot een felle polemiek over de aard van het Nederlandse koloniale bestuur. In deze derde druk wordt in een nieuw voorwoord uitgebreid ingegaan op die discussie. In de tekst zijn een groot aantal nieuwe bronnen en gegevens verwerkt. Daardoor kan deze studie met nog meer recht gelden als standaardwerk over dit onderwerp.
