Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education in Small Schools of Pennsylvania addresses the problems that have plagued education in the past and the most recent problems in education. Each chapter of the book contains one major problem facing education in small schools of Pennsylvania today. The first part of the chapter presents the controversy surrounding the topic, involving the ongoing debate found in the media. More importantly, the second section provides the answers to these issues, which are found by utilizing educational research and the experience of the author. Many of the problems facing the small schools can be solved without money. For the most part, educational problems can be solved using logical and pragmatic solutions. The family in America has changed, and this has translated into the public schools being the fundamental environment responsible in dealing with most of the problems facing the family unit. The schools can not do it alone. The new thinking is that the community should be made aware of the problems of the small schools and should be included in the solutions. This book contains the author's 25 years of experience in the small public schools of Pennsylvania. It is unique, in that, many of the problems of the public schools can be solved using new methods but without new money. This work is concerned mostly with small schools in Pennsylvania; however, the issues are national in scope. The specific audience is parents, educators, administrators, school board members, educational advocate groups and the growing number of the public who are concerned with improving education for the children in our schools.

Book excerpt: A Black mother bumps up against the limits of everything she thought she believed—about science and medicine, about motherhood, and about her faith—in search of the truth about her son. "The memoir dedicates important space to the numbing bureaucracy that often accompanies medical visits, particularly as seen through the eyes of a Black woman in the South. Having moved often within White neighborhoods and educational institutions around her home in Charlottesville, Harris is unflinching about her periodic unease in those quarters. . . Harris also brings humor to bear in moments of great adversity."—Karen Iris Tucker, Washington Post One morning, Tophs, Taylor Harris’s round-cheeked, lively twenty-two-month-old, wakes up listless, only lifting his head to gulp down water. She rushes Tophs to the doctor, ignoring the part of herself, trained by years of therapy for generalized anxiety disorder, that tries to whisper that she’s overreacting. But at the hospital, her maternal instincts are confirmed: something is wrong with her boy, and Taylor’s life will never be the same. With every question the doctors answer about Tophs’s increasingly troubling symptoms, more arise, and Taylor dives into the search for a diagnosis. She spends countless hours trying to navigate health and education systems that can be hostile to Black mothers and children; at night she googles, prays, and interrogates her every action. Some days, her sweet, charismatic boy seems just fine; others, he struggles to answer simple questions. A long-awaited appointment with a geneticist ultimately reveals nothing about what’s causing Tophs’s drops in blood sugar, his processing delays—but it does reveal something unexpected about Taylor’s own health. What if her son’s challenges have saved her life? This Boy We Made is a stirring and radiantly written examination of the bond between mother and child, full of hard-won insights about fighting for and finding meaning when nothing goes as expected.

This book was released on 2020-11-08 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unprecedented challenges to the nation's K-12 education system. The rush to slow the spread of the virus led to closures of schools across the country, with little time to ensure continuity of instruction or to create a framework for deciding when and how to reopen schools. States, districts, and schools are now grappling with the complex and high-stakes questions of whether to reopen school buildings and how to operate them safely if they do reopen. These decisions need to be informed by the most up-to-date evidence about the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19; about the impacts of school closures on students and families; and about the complexities of operating school buildings as the pandemic persists. Reopening K-12 Schools During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Prioritizing Health, Equity, and Communities provides guidance on the reopening and operation of elementary and secondary schools for the 2020-2021 school year. The recommendations of this report are designed to help districts and schools successfully navigate the complex decisions around reopening school buildings, keeping them open, and operating them safely.
