Download or read book Śāstrārambha written by Walter Slaje and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2008 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains a collection of 10 articles read to the audience of a topic-related panel at the 13th World Sanskrit Conference, held in Edinburgh in July 2006. The papers focus on a variety of aspects of prolegomena composed in Sanskrit by examining them in their different systemic and systematic contexts. Extending beyond sastra in its narrower sense as bodies of (philosophical) knowledge, some of the investigations assembled here concern themselves with preambles to different categories such as Vedic exegesis, poetics, poetry and historiography. Book Synopsis Medieval Monasticisms by : Steven Vanderputten
Download or read book Medieval Monasticisms written by Steven Vanderputten and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the deserts of Egypt to the emergence of the great monastic orders, the story of late antique and medieval monasticism in the West used to be straightforward. But today we see the story as far 'messier' - less linear, less unified, and more historicized. In the first part of this book, the reader is introduced to the astonishing variety of forms and experiences of the monastic life, their continuous transformation, and their embedding in physical, socio-economic, and even personal settings. The second part surveys and discusses the extensive international scholarship on which the first part is built. The third part, a research tool, rounds off the volume with a carefully representative bibliography of literature and primary sources.

Book Synopsis ‘Greater India’ and the Indian Expansionist Imagination, c. 1885–1965 by : Jolita Zabarskaitė
Download or read book ‘Greater India’ and the Indian Expansionist Imagination, c. 1885–1965 written by Jolita Zabarskaitė and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-11-07 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first systematic study of the genealogy, discursive structures, and political implications of the concept of ‘Greater India’, implying a Hindu colonization of Southeast Asia, and used by extension to argue for a past Indian greatness as a colonial power, reproducible in the present and future. From the 1880s to the 1960s, protagonists of the Greater India theme attempted to make a case for the importance of an expansionist Indian civilisation in civilizing Southeast Asia. The argument was extended to include Central Asia, Africa, North and South America, and other regions where Indian migrants were to be found. The advocates of this Indocentric and Hindu revivalist approach, with Hindu and Indian often taken to be synonymous, were involved in a quintessentially parochial project, despite its apparently international dimensions: to justify an Indian expansionist imagination that viewed India’s past as a colonizer and civilizer of other lands as a model for the restoration of that past greatness in the future. Zabarskaite shows that the crucial ideologues and elements used for the formation of the construct of Greater India can be traced to the svadeśī movement of the turn of the century, and that Greater India moved easily between the domains of the scholarly and the popular as it sought to establish itself as a form of nationalist self-assertion.
Book Synopsis India, Modernity and the Great Divergence by : Kaveh Yazdani
Download or read book India, Modernity and the Great Divergence written by Kaveh Yazdani and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India, Modernity and the Great Divergence is an original and pioneering book about India’s transition towards modernity and the rise of the West. The work examines global entanglements alongside the internal dynamics of 17th to 19th century Mysore and Gujarat in comparison to other regions of Afro-Eurasia. It is an interdisciplinary survey that enriches our historical understanding of South Asia, ranging across the fascinating and intertwined worlds of modernizing rulers, wealthy merchants, curious scholars, utopian poets, industrious peasants and skilled artisans. Bringing together socio-economic and political structures, warfare, techno-scientific innovations, knowledge production and transfer of ideas, this book forces us to rethink the reasons behind the emergence of the modern world.
Book Synopsis Herrschergenealogie und religiöses Patronat by : Annette Schmiedchen
Download or read book Herrschergenealogie und religiöses Patronat written by Annette Schmiedchen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Herrschergenealogie und religiöses Patronat, Annette Schmiedchen analyses some 250 inscriptions from the time of the early medieval royal dynasties of the Rāṣṭrakūṭas, Śilāhāras, and Yādavas, who reigned in central India from the 8th to the 13th centuries. The information derived from copper-plate charters and stone inscriptions primarily consists of genealogies of the ruling kings as well as of data regarding their religious foundations and endowments and the donations of other members of society. Annette Schmiedchen shows how genealogical accounts were modified to legitimize individual claims to power, and she convincingly proves that the 10th and 11th centuries were a period of religious change, which witnessed a shift in patronage patterns and a closer link between Vedic Brahmanism and Hindu temple worship.

Book excerpt: 4e de couv.: This volume presents the results of a pioneering anthropological documentation of hitherto unknown traditions of sacred music performed by marginalised musicians and priest-musicians of the Bora Sambar region of western Odisha. The work is based on ethnographic research in rural regions of western Odisha conducted between the years 2002 - 2010. The study presents the first documentation of a unique sound culture of India, Odisha. Local music is analysed as an indigenous theory, thus as a crucial medium of religion, culture and politics.
