Book Synopsis Global Vessel-Source Maritime Pollution Governance—Technical Innovation and Policy Orientation by : Lang Xu
Download or read book Global Vessel-Source Maritime Pollution Governance—Technical Innovation and Policy Orientation written by Lang Xu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-09-25 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The maritime industry plays an important role in international trade activities and the global economy. It is estimated that international shipping carries approximately 80% of global trade by volume and more than 70% by value. However, increasing maritime activities have had a negative impact on the marine environment and human health. For example, in November 2002, a tanker carrying 77000 tons of fuel oil sank in the Bay of Biscay, which polluted thousands of kilometers of Western European coasts, rivers, streams and swamps. Oil spills caused by ship accidents and other pollution associated with maritime activities have attracted considerable attention in the research community. A large number of studies on shipping pollution have been conducted across different disciplines. However, new challenges are emerging in maritime operation and management, leading to research questions related to intelligent technology and environmental protection, maritime pollution and governance, maritime accidents and environmental emergency.

Book Synopsis Decent Working Time by : International Labour Office
Download or read book Decent Working Time written by International Labour Office and published by International Labour Organization. This book was released on 2006 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Including international comparative analysis alongside national case studies, this volume offers a wealth of information on the new trends which have emerged over the past decades - all of which were discussed at the recent 9th International Symposium on Working Time, Paris (2004). It looks at the increasing use of results-based employment relationships for managers and professionals, and the increasing fragmentation of time to more closely tailor staffing needs to customer requirements (e.g., short-hours, part-time work). Moreover, as operating/opening hours rapidly expand toward a 24-hour and 7-day economy, the book considers how this has resulted in a growing diversification, decentralization, and individualization of working hours, as well as an increasing tension between enterprises' business requirements and workers' needs and preferences regarding their hours. This new reality has raised some other challenging issues as well and the volume addresses those such as increasing employment insecurity and instability, time-related social inequalities, particularly in relation to gender, workers' ability to balance their paid work with their personal lives, and even the synchronization of working hours with social times, such as community activities.

Book Synopsis Quantitative Human Rights Measures and Measurement by : Mark Gibney
Download or read book Quantitative Human Rights Measures and Measurement written by Mark Gibney and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-29 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this edited volume, leading experts of human rights measurement address the challenges scholarship of human rights face as well as explore approaches and means to overcoming them. The book seeks to further answer three specific and related questions. First, what do existing measures of human rights conditions tell us about the state of human rights? Are conditions improving or deteriorating? Second, how might scholars improve their measurement efforts and observe states’ human rights practices given efforts by governments to hide human rights abuses and to make them essentially “unobservable”? Finally, what challenges might scholars encounter in the future as the conceptualization of human rights develops and changes, and as new methods and technologies (e.g., natural language processing, machine learning) are introduced into the study of human rights? This book will be of interest to students and scholars of human rights politics, power, development, and governance. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Journal of Human Rights.
