Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The authors present an integrated macroeconomic approach to monitoring progress toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Sub-Saharan Africa. At the heart of their approach is a macroeconomic model that captures key linkages between foreign aid, public investment (disaggregated into education, infrastructure, and health), the supply side, and poverty. The model is linked through cross-section regressions to indicators of malnutrition, infant mortality, life expectancy, and access to safe water. A composite MDG indicator is also calculated. The functioning of the framework is illustrated by simulating the impact of an increase in aid and a debt write-off for Niger at the MDG horizon of 2015, under alternative assumptions about the degree of efficiency of public investment. The authors' approach can serve as the building block of Strategy Papers for Human Development (SPAHD), a more encompassing concept than the current "Poverty Reduction" Strategy Papers."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2007 Global Monitoring Report on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) assesses the contributions of developing countries, developed countries, and international financial institutions toward meeting universally agreed development commitments. Fourth in a series of annual reports leading up to 2015, this year's report reviews key developments of the past year, emerging priorities, and provides a detailed region-by-region picture of performance in the developing regions of the world, drawing on indicators for poverty, education, gender equality, health, and other goals. Subtitled "Confronting the Challenges of Gender Equality and Fragile States", this year's report highlights two key thematic areas-gender equality and empowerment of women (the third MDG) and the special problems of fragile states, where extreme poverty is increasingly concentrated. The report, which is jointly issued by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, argues that gender equality and the empowerment of women are central to the development agenda. This is because gender equality makes good economic sense and because it helps advance the other development goals-including education, nutrition, and reducing child mortality. Rapid progress has been made in some areas, such as achieving educational parity for girls in primary and secondary school in most countries. But in many other dimensions-including political representation and participation in nonagricultural employment-performance still falls short. Better monitoring and efforts at mainstreaming gender equality requires realistic goals, strong leadership, technical expertise, and financing.

Book excerpt: The framework of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will expire in 2015. In the post-MDGs era, persons with disabilities and disability issues must be an integral part of the international development agenda as the global community considers what will replace the MDGs beyond 2015. This publication is a collaborative effort by United Nations agencies, disability-related organizations and NGOs, as well as advocates and experts from around the world. It provides a "roadmap" for why and how disability can and should be included in the planning, monitoring and evaluation of development-related programs and policies. It assesses the links between disability and poverty and explores ways to integrate disability issues into current and future development efforts. This book will benefit those working in disability advocacy, programming and outreach efforts.

Book excerpt: In 2015, the world reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development by endorsing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 SDGs (2030 Agenda). To reach older people – an important, heterogeneous and growing population – and to create visibility in global and national policy and accountability mechanisms, a closer examination is needed of the kinds of data collection mechanisms and methods, and types of data collected to measure each SDG indicator relevant for older persons, including existing levels of disaggregation, analysis and dissemination. This WHO report is co-sponsored by the United Kingdom Office of National Statistics and the Ghana Statistical Service and reflects one of the major outputs for the Titchfield City Group on Ageing and Age-disaggregated Data Conceptual and Analytical Working Group. The report provides concrete examples of indicators and learnings from 20 National Statistics Offices (NSOs) on SDG indicators relevant for older people that are already being collected. Shared experiences from NSOs around the world demonstrate that disaggregation of data is possible, and that this information is useful to indicate the diverse experiences of older persons.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) South-East Asia Region have made considerable efforts to provide an extra surge towards achieving the targets set by the United Nations (UN) Millennium Declaration in 2000--the core values of which are enshrined in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Since 2000, these goals have been an important yardstick for the international community to measure its progress on selected vital health and socioeconomic indices. Tracking and measuring the progress towards achieving the MDGs has been a challenge for individual countries as well as the global community. To operationalize and monitor progress towards achieving the MDGs at the sub-national level, stratified as it is by various socioeconomic factors, and to navigate down to the male and female halves of the population is an even greater challenge. This publication presents the achievements made on the MDGs by Member States of the WHO South-East Asia Region, gauged only at the national level. It depicts the road covered by countries in the last 12 years and the gaps that have to be bridged in the remaining 3 years, and ascertains the likelihood of reaching each of the targets by 2015. The report also highlights the bottlenecks, the most intense challenge, and the constraints faced by each country in its strategic actions and interventions. To comply with the recommendations of UN Secretary-General's Commission on Information and Accountability for Women's and Children's Health, this publication also presents an analysis of the related MDG indicators on women's and children's health.

Book excerpt: "The United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight goals that UN Member States have agreed to try to achieve by the year 2015. The United Nations Millennium Declaration, signed in September 2000, commits world leaders to combat poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and discrimination against women. The MDGs are derived from this Declaration. Each MDG has targets set for 2015 and indicators to monitor progress from 1990 levels. Several of these relate directly to health."--
