Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What to write or what not to write now was in my mind after writing a few books. What to write about was the thought after the decision making. The best topic or theme to choose for the present age especially for children and youth is India’s great Epic Ramayana.” There is no panacea or remedy for the country’s ills unless the children and youth of today emulate the lives of great men of the world and life-like characters (once alive in real life according to ancient scripts and “Puranas”) in the Epic of India, “Ramayana” whose protagonists live a life of worthiness following righteousness, honesty, non-acceptance of gifts, control of human anger, greed, anxiety, hurriedness in mad unworthy pursuits, corrupt practices in all our acts, firm resistance to theft, robbery, sex abuse especially child abuse. What are we going to do to fight against corruption and other maladies in society? The children may ask – The answer is children and youth who are the pillars of tomorrow’s world should learn not to accept any gift from others – other than birthday and wedding gifts. This would certainly help us lead a life with self-respect and honor. This immortal story of Ramayana may perhaps help to reduce the evils in society and direct them to the right path of ‘Dharma’ and honest living.

Book excerpt: The Ramayana is an epic poem by the Hindu sage Valmiki, written in ancient Sanskrit sometime after 300 BC. It is an allegorical story that contains important Hindu teachings, and it has had great influence on Indian life and culture over the centuries. Children are often encouraged to emulate the virtues of the two main characters -- Rama and Sita. The Ramayana is frequently performed as theater or dance, and two Indian festivals -- Dussehra and Divali -- celebrate events in the story. This version of The Ramayana is told from the perspective of Sita, the queen. After she, her husband Rama and his brother are exiled from their kingdom, Sita is captured by the proud and arrogant king Ravana and imprisoned in a garden across the ocean. Ravana never stops trying to convince Sita to be his wife, but she steadfastly refuses his advances. Eventually Rama comes to her rescue with the help of the monkey Hanuman and his army. But Rama feels he can't trust Sita again. He forces Sita to undergo an ordeal by fire to prove herself to be true and pure. She is shocked and in grief and anger does so. She emerges unscathed and they return home to their kingdom as king and queen. However, suspicion haunts their relationship, and Sita once more finds herself in the forest, but this time she is pregnant. She has twins and continues to live in the forest with them. The story is exciting and dramatic, with many turns of plot. Magic animals, snakes, divine gods, demons, sorcerers and a vast cast of characters all play a part in the fierce battles fought to win Sita back. And in the process the story explores ideas of right vs. wrong, compassion, loyalty, trust, honor and the terrible price of war.

Its stories reveal about the various exploits of Vishnu incarnations. In rendering this holy text into English, the attention has been paid to put only those details that have certain fundamental truths of life. Hence, in this work those details have been deliberately omitted which may appear rather confusing or uninteresting to the reader not having the initiation in the sacred love. The main thrust of this attempt has been to show a clear glimpse of our ancient hermitage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers probably wonder why Shiv Shankar chooses mostly ancient Puranas as themes for his books. It is because in this “Kali Yuga”, the whole world is in great turmoil. People do not bother about “Dharma”, dogmas or principles. Everywhere, there is corruption, nepotism, favouritism and partiality. In short, people do not believe in leading a righteous life. In this scenario, a solution can only be found in ancient Sreriptures and Upanishads. In this great Indian epic, we find all kinds and aspects of human beings. There is nothing under the sun that has been set aside in this immortal work. For example, in one supreme protagonist, we find a high sense of paternal affection and respects unparalleled in mankind; he comes forward to make a big sacrifice. Another character is prepared to lead her life with her blind husband by closing her eyes with a piece of cloth throughout her life. Villainy, cruelty, ruthless and unscrupulous attitudes are seen in another important yet evil character. The highest degree of gratitude is portrayed in another who is known for his valour and heroism. There are so many other innumerable affections which will be seen with awe, wonder and admiration when anyone starts reading this great epic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Narayan makes this treasury of Indian folklore and mythology readily accessible to the general reader . . . he captures the spirit of the narrative.”—Library Journal The Mahabharata tells a story of such violence and tragedy that many people in India refuse to keep the full text in their homes, fearing that doing so would invite a disastrous fate upon their house. Covering everything from creation to destruction, this ancient poem remains an indelible part of Hindu culture and a landmark in ancient literature. Centuries of listeners and readers have been drawn to The Mahabharata, which began as disparate oral ballads and grew into a sprawling epic. The modern version is famously long, and at more than 1.8 million words—seven times the combined lengths of the Iliad and Odyssey—it can be incredibly daunting. But contemporary readers have a much more accessible entry point to this important work, thanks to R. K. Narayan’s masterful, elegant translation and abridgement of the poem. Now with a new foreword by Wendy Doniger, as well as a concise character and place guide and a family tree, The Mahabharata is ready for a new generation of readers. Narayan ably distills a tale that is both traditional and constantly changing. He draws from both scholarly analysis and creative interpretation and vividly fuses the spiritual with the secular. Through this balance he has produced a translation that is not only clear, but graceful, one that stands as its own story as much as an adaptation of a larger work.

It is a part of great epic Mahabharata and contains seven hundred verses, which have been uttered by the Supreme Lord Himself in the starting of Mahabharata War when Arjuna did not want to indulge in war seeing all his relatives standing in the enemy army.
