Book excerpt: This volume represents a detailed analysis of the grade placement of mathematics learning goals across all state-level curriculum standards published as of May 2005. The volume documents the varied grade-level mathematics curriculum expectations in the U.S. and highlights a general lack of consensus across states. As states continue to work to improve learning opportunities for all students this report can serve as a useful summary to inform future curriculum decisions. The report is also intended to stimulate discussion at the national level regarding roles and responsibilities of national agencies and professional organizations with regard to curriculum leadership. Serious and collaborative work that results from such discussions can contribute to a more coherent, focused mathematics curriculum for US students

Book excerpt: Across the land communities are questioning the role of schools and the community's expectations of parents, students, and teachers. Increasingly, educators struggle to convince administrators, parents, students, and community members that teaching strategies have strengthened and that students are improving. Yet, teachers consistently share their concerns about the lack of parent and community involvement in education. Parents indicate their desire to improve the connections between the classroom and the community, but are unsure how to initiate such relationships. In Authentic Learning, Michael L. Slavkin provides parents and educators the opportunity to understand why best practices, constructivism, student-centered practices, student choice, and democratic classrooms are effective because they result in a variety of environmental experiences. Such experiences have often been thought to be the environmental foundation that supports and nurtures a creative and challenged brain: guiding children to think in a variety of ways, providing the flexibility of thought that is critical in the 21st century world. With this text these two groups will discover ways they can work together to create meaningful learning experiences at home and school. For parents, students, and preservice and inservice teachers.

Book excerpt: In response to No Child Let Behind, states have developed mathematics curriculum frameworks that outline their intended curriculum for grades K–8. While some have indicated that districts or individual schools may use their framework as a model for specific curricular programs, others have taken a more prescriptive or even mandatory stance. Collectively, these frameworks present a sense of the national mathematics program and what we expect students learn. This volume follows The Intended Curriculum as Represented in State Mathematics Curriculum Standards: Consensus or Confusion? (Reys). While the Reys volume focused on number and operations, algebra and reasoning strands, the Smith volume analyzes geometry, measurement, probability, and statistics strands. It also presents an analysis what verbs used tell us about the cognitive demand of grade level expectations. This volume, even more than the Reys volume, emphasizes the theme of variability in the content, expression, and clarity of grade level expectations across the states. As the nation moves toward implementation of the Common Core Standards, this volume highlights some of the challenges teachers and other school personnel face in interpreting mathematics grade-level standards as goals for classroom teaching. The shift from 50 state standards to one document does not resolve this basic challenge.

Book excerpt: We're all learners on life's journey, and often the messy problems we encounter present us with the best education. Researchers are finding that the same concept holds true for students in our classrooms. Problem-based learning (PBL) is an authentic, experiential form of learning centered around the collaborative investigation and resolution of real-world problems. In PBL, students address a problematic situation from the perspective of a stakeholder in the situation. As both a curriculum organizer and instructional strategy, PBL fosters active learning, supports knowledge construction, integrates disciplines, and naturally combines school learning with real life. In this second edition of their book, Torp and Sage offer opportunities to learn about PBL from a variety of perspectives. New to this edition is an in-depth look at assessing education in and through problem-based learning--how to use assessment not only to see what students have learned during the PBL experience, but also how to use assessment to enhance PBL itself. New examples--from elementary, secondary, and university levels--new charts, and expanded graphics enhance every chapter of this new edition.
