Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt at a reconstruction of the YOgacara subjective idealism and an exhaustive criticism of it by different schools of Indian realism. The exposition of the doctrine is based on the works of Santaraksita and Kamalasila and the critics of Vijnanavada. Generally the exposition and criticism of the doctrine by every eminent thinker have been given separately. Most of the critics give a fair and impartial account of Vijnanavada and contribute to the clarification of the idealist position. The author has dealt with the controversy between subjective idealism and realism in Indian thought and tried to give a fairly full account of the arguments by which Indian realists seek to establish the reality of the external world. Incidentally the Yogacara subjective idealism has been compared with the idealism of Berkeley and the sensationalism of Hume and the resemblances and differences between them have been briefly noted. A striking feature of the book is that the parallel arguments of many contemporary realists have been quoted simply to indicate that the philosophical genius of a particular type is apt to move in the same groove, irrespective of the soil it thrives in.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professors Ramakrishna Rao and Anand Paranjpe are two distinguished psychologist-philosophers who pioneered what has come to be known as Indian psychology. In this authoritative volume, they draw the contours of Indian psychology, describe the methods of study, define the critical concepts, explain the central ideas, and discuss their implications to psychological study and application to life. The main theme is organized around the theme that psychology is the study of the person. They go on to present a model of the person as a unique composite of body, mind, and consciousness. Consciousness is conceived to be qualitatively and ontologically different from all material forms. The goal of the person is self-realization, which consists in the realization of the true self as distinct and separate from the manifest ego. It is facilitated by cultivating consciousness, which leads to some kind of psycho-spiritual symbiosis, personal transformation, and flowering of one’s hidden human potentials.

Book excerpt: Here is the magnificent attempt made at a constructive survey of Indian psychology. In the words of the author, &the philosophical literature of India is not only rich in metaphysics, but also in psychology, logic, ethics, aesthetics, and epistemology. There is no system of Indian philosophy which has not advanced a theory of knowledge, and which has not appealed to the facts of experience. Every school of philosophy has made valuable contributions to psychology, logic, ethics and other mental sciences. The work is divided into three volumes. Volume One makes a minute and detailed discussion of the problems of perception and cognition. It throws light on different topics from the different standpoints of Indian thought. Volume Two deals with the Psychology of Emotions, Alankara, Aesthetic sentiments, Nascent Love, Ardent Love, Sex and Psychology of religion. It deals with Rupa Goswami s analysis of devotion and sentiments of devotion and refers to Jiva Goswami s views. This is the most comprehensive book based on Sanskrit works. Volume Three is exclusively devoted to the analysis of epistemology and its perceptional aspects. Indian psychology created a new standard in scholarly work on its first publication by Kegan Paul in the thirties. The present reprint of all the three volumes of this classic meets the needs of students and teachers of Indian Psychology as well as the general reader interested in the study of Indian philosophical - psychological literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by Murray Stein and Thomas Arzt, the essays in the series Jung's Red Book for Our Time: Searching for Soul under Postmodern Conditions are geared to the recognition that the posthumous publication of The Red Book: Liber Novus by C.G. Jung in 2009 was a meaningful gift to our contemporary world. The Red Book can be considered as a contribution to the "Golden Chain" (aurea catena) of the world's imaginative literature reaching back to the ancient Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh. As Jung describes this tradition in a letter to Max Rychner, "Faust is the most recent pillar in that bridge of the spirit which spans the morass of world history, beginning with the Gilgamesh epic, the I Ching, the Upanishads, the Tao-te-Ching, the fragments of Heraclitus, and continuing in the Gospel of St. John, the letters of St. Paul, in Meister Eckhart and in Dante." The Red Book extends the "Golden Chain" into our era. Each of the 18 essays in this third volume of the series, Jung's Red Book for Our Time, is unique, and all of them converge on the central theme of the relevance of The Red Book for people today in search of soul under postmodern conditions. This is the third volume of a multi-volume series set up on a global and multicultural level and includes essays from the following distinguished Jungian analysts and scholars:

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian psychology is a distinct psychological tradition rooted in the native Indian ethos. It manifests in the multitude of practices prevailing in the Indian subcontinent for centuries. Unlike the mainstream psychology, Indian psychology is not overwhelmingly materialist-reductionist in character. It goes beyond the conventional third-person forms of observation to include the study of first-person phenomena such as subjective experience in its various manifestations and associated cognitive phenomena. It does not exclude the investigation of extraordinary states of consciousness and exceptional human abilities. The quintessence of Indian nature is its synthetic stance that results in a magical bridging of dichotomies such as natural and supernatural, secular and sacred, and transactional and transcendental. The result is a psychology that is practical, positive, holistic and inclusive. The Handbook of Indian Psychology is an attempt to explore the concepts, methods and models of psychology systematically from the above perspective. The Handbook is the result of the collective efforts of more than thirty leading international scholars with interdisciplinary backgrounds. In thirty-one chapters, the authors depict the nuances of classical Indian thought, discuss their relevance to contemporary concerns, and draw out the implications and applications for teaching, research and practice of psychology.
