The articles documented inter-annual and decadal variability in addition to documenting long term trends of different parameters. The trends have been tested for statistical significance using standard techniques. It is expected that the present book will be an excellent reference material for researchers as well as for policy makers. These results will be useful in interpreting future climate change scenarios over the region being projected using coupled climate models. Despite the importance of these modes, we have limited understanding of how they vary on long timescales due to the short length of instrumental climate records. Fortunately, climate information stored in natural archives can provide us with information on how these modes varied in the more distant past. Lake sediments are an ideal climate archive since they are continuous, have high temporal resolution, and contain many potential climate proxies. In the present study, I use lake sediment records to assess past variability in three climate modes: the El Niño/Southern Oscillation, the Asian monsoon, and the Arctic Oscillation. Exploring modern precipitation variability across the Asian monsoon region, I found that precipitation is not coherent, which holds implications for paleorecords that are hypothesized to represent monsoon variability, including many lake sediment records. Monsoon precipitation in the Arabian Sea is distinct from precipitation in India and China, and increased precipitation in the Arabian Sea coincides with decreased precipitation in the western North Pacific. Furthermore, only precipitation in southwestern Tibet responds to the Southwest monsoon, whereas precipitation in southeastern Tibet responds to the western North Pacific monsoon. In southwestern Tibet, I have reconstructed dust variability over the last millennium using the lake sediment record from Kiang Co. Our record indicates increasing dust over the 20th century, and our hypothesized dust proxy is positively correlated with the summer Arctic Oscillation Index. A trend toward more positive Arctic Oscillation Index values as well as higher temperatures over the 20th century likely drove increased dustiness in southwestern Tibet, due the influence of temperature on glaciofluvial sediment availability in the Himalayas. Measurements of local climate, lake water and sediment at Genovesa Crater Lake, Galápagos, indicate the lake responds to local climate variability, with carbonate-rich sediments forming during prolonged dry periods (La Niña events), and organic-rich sediment forming during the warm periods. The ratios of silica and strontium to calcium also reflect cool season SST. Thus, this lake sediment record has potential to provide a record of both seasonal and ENSO variability spanning the Holocene.

For several regions across India, this means an increase in long dry periods with low or no rainfall, intermittent with short, intense spells of rainfall. These changes are particularly significant for the western, central and eastern states of India where more than 55% of the cultivated area is largely rainfed and where the adaptive capacity is the lowest. The large-scale secular changes in monsoon rainfall are attributed to the increase in global emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants. At the same time, local changes through urbanization, land use changes and deforestation have brought in a non-uniform response in these rainfall trends. Changes in the onset, duration and intensity of the rainfall call for a reassessment of the crop calendar and climate resilient measures for the food-water-energy sectors of the country. Global warming has also altered the relationship between sea surface temperatures and other predictors of monsoon rainfall, introducing increasing challenges and uncertainties in the monsoon forecasts. Climate projections indicate a further increase in the monsoon variability and a shortening of the rainy season in the future, though there is considerable disagreement between model simulations.

Here, I present multi-proxy records from sediments at three lakes in the northeastern United States and northwestern China to investigate the nature of Holocene climate change and climate variability. Chapter 1 presents a 35-year resolution calcite delta18O record for the last 12 ka (1ka=1000 cal yr BP) from Lake Grinnell in northern New Jersey. The record suggests that the delta18O shift from a stable state to a steadily decreasing trend at 5.8 ka reflects a non-linear response of atmospheric circulation to the gradual decrease in insolation, and that a dominant frequency shift in solar forcing might have caused the shift of centennial-scale climate oscillations in amplitude and frequency. Chapter 2 provides a 2-year resolution calcite delta18O record from a freeze-core at White Lake in northern New Jersey. The delta 18O changes, together with the published paleosalinity reconstructions from Chesapeake Bay, show a dry climate at 1780-1850, a wet climate at 1850-1920, and ~20-year moisture oscillations after 1920. Regional atmospheric circulation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation may control the observed moisture variations. Anthropogenic global warming could be responsible for the increased moisture variability since 1920. Chapter 3 presents high-resolution lake-level records for the last 8 ka from Hurleg Lake on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. Consistent with the East Asian and Indian monsoon reconstructions, the data show a dry and highly variable climate from 7.8 to 1 ka and a stable and wet climate after1 ka. Six dry intervals at 7.6-7.2 ka, 6.2-5.9 ka, 5.3-4.9 ka, 4.4-3.8 ka, 2.7-2.4 ka and 1.7-1.1 ka have also been detected. Insolation, solar variations, and/or oceanic and atmospheric circulations are responsible for the monsoon changes and millennial-scale variability. Chapter 4 provides a centennial-scale lake-level record for the past 1 ka at Hurleg Lake. The opposite moisture pattern between the Qaidam Basin and surrounding mountains implies that topography could be an important factor in controlling regional moisture patterns through mediating rising and subsidence air masses in this topographically-complex region. The 200-year moisture oscillations were possibly caused by change in solar forcing.
