Book excerpt: INDIA DECODED is a comprehensive commentary on the history of India from the point of view of an emerging new model of historical exploration which is based on the theory of civilization cycles. This work deals with the story of man in the subcontinent from the very beginning of his existence to our own time. The original sub-continental civilization, which today stands fragmented as the territorial states of Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, is considered as a single unit with recurring ups and downs in order to understand its history in the right spirit. This work which critically analyzes various events, ideas and institutions of the great landmass in the past reassures that a new historical vision can enable the fractured polities of the subcontinent to stand together once again as a great civilization in the future.

Book excerpt: On the night of 8 November 2016, at 8:15 pm, India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, announced in a televised broadcast to the nation that with effect from midnight, currency notes of denominations Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 would no longer be legal tender. In one stroke, this involved the de-recognition of over 86 per cent of the value of Indian currency in circulation with only four hours’ notice. This important book provides a quick and concise explanation of the goals, implications, initial effects and the political economy of this major demonetisation move by the Government of India. It clarifies key concepts and offers astute economic analysis to guide the reader through the various claims, arguments and critiques that have been made; highlights the complexities of the processes that have been unleashed; and examines the likely outcomes in the long term as well as those that are immediately evident. Timely and lucid, this book will interest students and researchers in the fields of economics, finance, management, law, politics and governance as well as policy makers, legislators, civil society activists and the media.

The objective of providing the information is that sometimes it is found that the management and auditor are overlooking the requirement. Without such knowledge, the analysis may not be complete; therefore, the same is provided under this heading. • Why is it Important? o Under this heading, the item's importance is explained for financial statement analysis to unlock the secrets. This part explains why it is relevant and how it is relevant to find out any important issue relating to such items, which may lead to early warning signs, red flags, strengths or weakness • How to Analyse to Unlock? o This is the most crucial part of the relevant chapter. Under this heading, a stepwise approach is explained for optimum item analysis. As each item of the balance sheet and statement of profit and loss serves a different purpose, separate methodologies and approaches have been used for analysing the items considering their natures. Therefore, for analysis (one which is result-oriented and objective), a separate methodology has been designed considering the nature of the chapter • Case Analysis o After explaining the meaning of the item (what is it), the integral points (do you know), the importance of the item (why is it important), the method and approach of analysis (how to analyse to unlock), a real case analysis is picked, which best explains the issue. In the case of analysis, only that part of the financial statements relevant to the issue under the chapter is provided in the box. Sometimes, considering the importance of the chapter, more than one case analysis is also used, apart from the use of research/study. Therefore, whatever information is provided in the box is actual and real, as available in the balance sheet of the case analysis. After providing the actual information in the box, the same is explained for a logical conclusion of the issue • Bottom Line o It is the concluding part of the chapter, wherein the issue is summarised in short The detailed contents of the book are as follows: • Statement of Profit & Loss o Revenue from Operations o Other Income o Cost of Materials Consumed and Purchases of Traded Goods o Manufacturing and Operating Cost o Finance Cost o Depreciation o Tax Expense o Other Expenses o Exceptional Items, Extraordinary Items and Prior Period Items o Property, Plant and Equipment – Tangible o Fixed Assets – Intangible o Investments o Loans & Advances o Other Assets o Inventories and Trade Receivables o Cash, Cash Equivalent and Bank Balances o Advances Recoverable in Cash or Kind or for Value to be Received o Shareholders' Funds or Net Worth or Capital o Provisions & Contingent Liabilities o Borrowings o Trade Payables and Other Liabilities • Connecting Statement o Significant Accounting Policies o Notes on Accounts o Cash Flow Statements • Concept of Audit and Auditor's Report o Understand the Concept of Audit o Report on Internal Financial Controls o Analysis of Auditors' Opinions o Analysis of Emphasis of Matters/Note o Companies Auditor's Report Order o Control over Resources o Related Party Transactions o Legal Compliance o Non-Banking Finance Companies o Statutory Dues o Financial Health of the Company o End Use of Funds o Frauds and Unrecorded Transactions o Resignation of Statutory Auditor • Master Key o How to Link 5 Keys to Decode Financial Statement § Key #1 – Items of Profit and Loss § Key #2 – Items of Balance Sheet § Key #3 – Importance of the Notes on Accounts, Significance of Accounting Policies and Inconsistencies in Disclosures & Actual Practice § Key #4 – Auditors Report & CARO Report § Key #5 – Linking the above Keys to have an effective result

Book excerpt: Decoded tells the story of Rong Jinzhwen, one of the great code-breakers in the world. A semi-autistic mathematical genius, Jinzhen is recruited to the cryptography department of China's secret services, Unit 701, where he is assigned the task of breaking the elusive 'Code Purple'. Jinzhen rises through the ranks to eventually become China's greatest and most celebrated code-breaker; until he makes a mistake. Then begins his descent through the unfathomable darkness of the world of cryptology into madness. Decoded was an immediate success when it was published in 2002 in China and has become an international bestseller. With the pacing of a literary crime thriller, Mai Jia's masterpiece also combines elements of historical fiction and state espionage. Taking place in the shadowy world of Chinese secret security, where Mai Jia worked for decades, it introduces us to a place that is unfamiliar, intriguing and authentic. And with Rong Jinzhen, it introduces us to a character who is deeply flawed and fragile, yet possessing exceptional intelligence. Decoded is an unforgettable and gripping story of genius, brilliance, insanity and human frailty. Mai Jia (the pseudonym of Jiang Benhu) is arguably the most successful writer in China today. His books are constant bestsellers, with total sales over three million copies. He became the highest paid author in China last year with his new book, Wind Talk. He has achieved unprecedented success with film adaptation: all of his novels are made - or are being made - into major films or TV series, the screenplays of which are often written by Mai Jia himself. He is hailed as the forerunner of Chinese espionage fiction, and has created a unique genre that combines spycraft, code-breaking, crime, human drama, historical fiction, and metafiction. He has won almost every major award in China, including the highest literary honor - the Mao Dun Award.

These haplogroups are associated with the speakers of Austro-Asiatic languages such as Mundari, Santali and Khasi. These haplogroups and related languages are also present in Southeast Asia. In India, speakers of these languages are currently found mostly in Central and East India. Even though a prominent philologist of Harvard University, Mr. Michael Witzel, has argued the case for a language close to Munda (which he calls para-Mundari) being one of the languages of the erstwhile Indus Valley, a finding of this nature will come as a surprise to most others. So if the genetics do find haplogroups O and M4a in Rakhigarhi, some of our current understanding of Indian history may have to be revised. Tony Joseph in The Hindu, December 23, 2017

This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rioting in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, in 1961 was a watershed event for India. After the Partition, it was the first time such large-scale communal violence had taken place. The author, Prateep K. Lahiri, on his first posting, was involved in bringing the situation under control. Some time later in 1969, as district magistrate of Indore, Lahiri played a key role in dealing with the outbreak of communal violence in that city. While the violence in both instances appeared to have been spontaneously provoked by an incident - just like in Gujarat in 2002 - the reasons that later emerged for the rioting revealed the deeper malaise that continues to affect our social system. Decoding Intolerance: Riots and the Emergence of Terrorism in India is a significant book by an administrator, who has observed the minutiae of the crisis from close quarters and scrutinized the role of the police and the state administration. The author synthesizes various dimensions of the issue, including the changing perceptions of Indian Muslims in the recent past, the history of religious fundamentalism and how it manifests as communal unrest, both in India and elsewhere. The phenomenon of terrorism, which has reared its ugly head over India and the world, is also touched upon to understand the implications it has had on the shifting political scenario. Decoding Intolerance critically analyzes the recurrence of communal violence and offers a persuasive argument about the problem, with a focus on its prevention in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, Bengali Muslims in India have faced harassment and scapegoating as the trope of the illegal Bangladeshi has gained political currency. India's Bangladesh Problem explores the experience of Bengali Muslims on the Indian side of the India–Bangladesh border in the context of neoliberal policies, unequal bilateral relations, labor migration, contested citizenship, and increasingly xenophobic government rhetoric. Drawing on extensive research in the borderlands and hinterlands of both countries, Navine Murshid argues that ever-deepening neoliberal policies across the border have shaped how certain ethnic groups are valued and have reconfigured social hierarchies. She provides new insights into the strategic inclusion, exclusion, and invisibility that characterizes Bengali Muslims' lives, rendering them a group susceptible to manipulation by virtue of their ethnic kinship to the majority of Bangladeshis. In turn, Bengali Muslims simultaneously resist and utilize received neoliberal ideas to sustain their lives and livelihoods at a time when neoliberal development has largely bypassed them.

Book excerpt: In a captivating memoir, an Egyptian American visionary and scientist provides an intimate view of her personal transformation as she follows her calling—to humanize our technology and how we connect with one another. LONGLISTED FOR THE PORCHLIGHT BUSINESS BOOK AWARD • “A vivid coming-of-age story and a call to each of us to be more mindful and compassionate when we interact online.”—Arianna Huffington NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY PARADE Rana el Kaliouby is a rarity in both the tech world and her native Middle East: a Muslim woman in charge in a field that is still overwhelmingly white and male. Growing up in Egypt and Kuwait, el Kaliouby was raised by a strict father who valued tradition—yet also had high expectations for his daughters—and a mother who was one of the first female computer programmers in the Middle East. Even before el Kaliouby broke ground as a scientist, she broke the rules of what it meant to be an obedient daughter and, later, an obedient wife to pursue her own daring dream. After earning her PhD at Cambridge, el Kaliouby, now the divorced mother of two, moved to America to pursue her mission to humanize technology before it dehumanizes us. The majority of our communication is conveyed through nonverbal cues: facial expressions, tone of voice, body language. But that communication is lost when we interact with others through our smartphones and devices. The result is an emotion-blind digital universe that impairs the very intelligence and capabilities—including empathy—that distinguish human beings from our machines. To combat our fundamental loss of emotional intelligence online, she cofounded Affectiva, the pioneer in the new field of Emotion AI, allowing our technology to understand humans the way we understand one another. Girl Decoded chronicles el Kaliouby’s journey from being a “nice Egyptian girl” to becoming a woman, carving her own path as she revolutionizes technology. But decoding herself—learning to express and act on her own emotions—would prove to be the biggest challenge of all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Heinous Offence of Rape has been dealt with under the Indian Penal Code not as a mere provision with a limited scope but has acquired a very wide dimension in terms of its definition as well as scope. The rape laws in India have evolved with time due to growing brutality of this barbaric crime in the country. The provision has seen important amendments over the years on the recommendation and suggestion of various Law Commission Reports and various landmark judgements highlighting the growing need for a much more stringent law to curb the gravity of the offence of rape. Even though the IPC was codified in the year 1860 i.e., about 160 years ago with provisions considered very stringent in terms of the punishments laid down for different offences therein, it has somewhere failed to achieve its purpose. The ever increasing number of such offences being committed in the society is the best evidence of its shortcomings. The gravity and brutality of the offence has drawn concerns from all quarters yet the offence has continued unabated, with abysmally low conviction rates, even lighter and sometimes, erratic sentencing patterns and unsympathetic treatment of its victims. This book is an attempt to bring in perspective, the reason for the increase in number of rape cases in India and the lacunae in the practice of such a stringent law. This book is a collection of scholarly articles by authors from various domains of law and they have provided a narration of the Anti-Rape Laws prevailing in the country. The subject has been dealt with comprehensively, while describing the historical influences in the laws. The journey of the entire development of the law has been traced by taking into focus the shifting concerns and growing need for the amendment of the provisions. The numerous legislative amendments redefining the offence, enhancing punishment and procedural aspects have been discussed. The judicial developments through landmark precedents laid by various courts have also been discussed in length to show the adversity of the crime and the need for looking into the law due to the practical shortcomings in the law. Appropriate references to international developments and municipal laws of nations have been provided in order to give a comparative treatment to the subject. Emerging issues in rape laws in India and practicable suggestions find a place in the book. Overall, it attempts an informative and critical study of the subject from diverse perspectives. Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. Despite such harsh penalties against it, the gruesome act that has penetrated in the form of Rape has only escalated. This calls for an in-depth analysis so as to ascertain the loopholes in the current law in force. During the process of writing this book the authors came across shocking events and instances of Rape that shows the inhumanity that prevails in the country which is much beyond any law. The most distressing fact was the inhumane conditions that victims have to suffer due to the taboo of Rape and the stigma attached with this crime. Despite going through such a horrific crime, the victims rather than receiving a proper relief have to undergo severe mental and physical agony. The inspiration for this book was derived from the fact that India is a democratic country with a robust legal framework, however, it lacks a stringent legal enforcement mechanism due to which such a gruesome and barbaric act of inhumanity is on the rise. The objective of the book is to bring in view of the readers the various aspects of Anti-Rape Laws in India, the evolution of the rape laws in the country, need for gender-neutral laws by criminalising Male Rape, the growing cases of Marital Rape and need for making a law against it, prevailing misuse of anti-rape laws and majorly looking at the practicality of the law as contrary to how it is laid down in the statute.
