Book excerpt: Excerpt from India, Ancient and Modern They also contain frequent reference to the political state of the country, and various other matters which excite a desire for further knowledge, but they nowhere supply it, nor give information where it may be found. A work on India suited to the people of the United States, appeared to be a desideratum, and in endeavoring to supply this want, the writer has aimed to include as much information concerning India, ancient and modern, as people generally would wish to read, and to which they could refer as often as they might have occasion. Newspapers and other journals often contain religious and political intelligence concerning India, which their readers can but imperfectly appreciate for want of more knowledge of the country and its inhabitants. And if this is so in respect to allusions, sketches, and extracts in American Journals, it is yet more so in respect to allusions, extracts, etc., contained in the English Reviews and Journals, as such articles were originally written for readers who have much more knowledge of India than the people of the United States generally have. In no country have the inhabitants retained their religion, their superstitions, and their social and local usages for so long time, and with so little change, as in India. The religion of the ancient Egyptians, the Assyrians, the Persians, the Greeks, and the Romans, had great influence in forming the character of those nations. But they have all passed away, and their character and religion can now only be known from their history, and from those monuments and ruins of which the present generation in those countries, know neither the origin nor the meaning. But in India, the religious system which existed in the time of the Pharaohs, of Nebuchadnezzar, of Cyrus, of Solon, and of Romulus, still continues, and its influence is seen in the present state and character of the inhabitants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient India The first chapter deals with the early portion of Indian History, and so the title 'ancient India' has been given to the book. The other chapters deal with a variety of subjects, and are based on lectures given on different occa sions. One was originally prepared as my thesis for the ma. Degree Examination of the University of Madras. The favourable reception given to my early work by historical and oriental scholars encouraged me to put my researches into a more permanent form, which a liberal grant from the Madras School Book and Literature Society has enabled me to do. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Ancient History of India: On the Period From 650 to 325 B. C It is scarcely necessary for me to add that the subject of the Ancient Indian History and Culture is a progressive one, and with every additional studv and find of new materials some of the conclusions previously drawn are likely to be modified. And, as a matter of fact, as this book is reaching its completion, I myself am aware that I now hold somewhat different views on one or two matters dealt with in these Lectures. Similarly, though no effort has been spared to ensure accuracy and fullness, I do not expect this book to be by any means free from defects. But I request my readers not to play the role of a cattlelouse described in the well-known Sanskrit verse} but rather to confine their attention to the good points only, if there be any, in these Lectures, and thus help to carry forward the torch of research work to illumine the dark periods of Ancient Indian History. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Indian Historical Tradition The views about ancient India now held by scholars are based upon an examination of the Veda and Vedic literature, to the neglect of Puranic and epic tradition; that is, ancient Indian history has been fashioned out of compositions, which are purely religious and priestly, which notoriously do not deal with history, and which totally lack the historical sense. The extraordinary nature of such history may be perceived, if it were suggested that European history should be constructed merely out of theological literature. What would raise a smile if applied to Europe has been soberly accepted when applied to India. This contrast is full justification for a consideration of what historical tradition has to tell us, and the results obtained from an examination of Puranic and epic tradition as well as of the Rigveda and Vedic literature are set out in the following pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corporate Life in Ancient India The spirit of co-operation has contributed more than anything else to the present highly developed stage of civilisation. The gigantic ex periments in popular government and the huge economic organisations spreading over the whole world, such as we see to-day all around us, have made the modern age what it is. The corporate activity to which they owe their origin and the present high level of success, may therefore be justly looked upon as the distinctive element in the culture of the day. It is rightly believed that no nation that lacks in this essential ele ment of culture can hope to keep pace with the progress of the world.
