Book Synopsis Citrus Genetics, Breeding and Biotechnology by : Iqrar Ahmad Khan
Download or read book Citrus Genetics, Breeding and Biotechnology written by Iqrar Ahmad Khan and published by CABI. This book was released on 2007 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to provide consolidated information on citrus breeding in the era of biotechnology, which is likely to hasten the pace of variety development aimed at resolving the problems faced by grove owners growing currently available cultivars. The subjects covered are focused on citrus while providing information equally useful to the breeders of other tree crops. It will also help students of genetic and breeding identify appropriate applications of biotechnology in citrus breeding. While providing information on future avenues, it also reviews the past progress and achievements ensuring continuity of the subject. Several chapters include protocols for novel techniques that should facilitate their broader application by citrus breeders.

Download or read book The Viroids written by T.O. Diener and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than seven years have passed since the first monograph on viroids was published. At that time, the existence of viroids as a novel type of pathogen far smaller than viruses had been amply demonstrated and some of their unusual molecular properties had been elucidated, but the entry of molecular biology into viroid research was still in its infancy. Since that time, our knowledge of the molecular properties of viroids has increased exponentially and viroids have become even more fasci nating than was the case seven years ago. Today, aside from transfer RNA, viroids are probably the best known type of RNA-at least from a struc tural standpoint. Much less is known of the mechanisms of viroid func tion, such as the exact pathway and enzymology of viroid replication and the biochemistry of viroid pathogenesis. Recently, however, emphasis in viroid research has shifted from structural to functional themes and im portant beginnings have been made in the elucidation of viroid struc ture-function relationships. With the discovery of viroidlike RNAs within the capsids of certain plant viruses and the finding of surprising structural similarities between viroids and plant satellite RNAs, the conceptual gap between viroids and conventional viruses has significantly narrowed. Even beyond virology, connecting links with cellular RNAs have come to light and the long isolation of viroids land "viroidologists"J has come to an end.

Book Synopsis Advances in Disease Vector Research by :
Download or read book Advances in Disease Vector Research written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 9 in this series consists of four chapters on vectors that affect human or animal health and six chapters on plant pathogens and their vectors. In Chapter 1, Alex S. Raikhel discusses vitellogenesis in mosquitoes: the cornerstone of the reproductive cycle involving massive production of yolk precursors by the fat body and their accumulation in developing oocytes. In anautogeneous mosquitoes, vitellogenesis is dependent on the availability of a blood meal and, as a consequence, is linked to transmission of pathogens. Therefore, elucidation of mechanisms governing the mosquito vitellogenesis is critical for the successful development of novel strategies in vector and disease management. Previous reviews on mosquito vitellogenesis have dealt predominantly with hormonal control. The goal of this review, however, is to summarize significant progress which has been achieved in understanding mosquito vitellogenesis at the cellular, biochemical and molecular levels. It is with these disciplines that we expect to fully understand the mechanisms governing this key process in mosquito reproduction.
