Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1972, Incomes Policy and the Public Sector is a consideration of the work conducted by The National Board for Prices and Incomes from 1965 to 1970. The Board, commonly known as the PIB, was intended to be the instrument through which an incomes policy could be shaped and guided in Britain. This book looks first at the reports that it made, and the criteria and judgements used, and then examines incomes policy by studying its impact in several areas in the public sector. Incomes Policy and the Public Sector offers a comprehensive overview of incomes policy from 1965-1970 and puts the reader in touch with ‘real economic situations’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public Sector Economics: Made Simple introduces the reader, step by step, clearly and methodically, to the concepts and principles of public sector economics. The functions and finance of central government, local authorities, and nationalized industries are examined within the framework of a national economy. Examples are given largely from the British economy but international comparisons are made. A large number of tables and diagrams are also provided so as to relate the theory to the real world. Comprised of 21 chapters, this book discusses the theory and practice of public finance, with emphasis on public expenditure, taxation, and the national debt. Fiscal policy with its economic, social, and political objectives is also considered and viewed in relation to monetary policy and prices and incomes policy. After an overview of economic systems and models, the book focuses on allocation of resources and provision of public goods; public expenditure in Britain; the theory of taxation and the tax system; taxes on income, profits, consumption, and capital; and taxable capacity, incidence of taxation, and the tax burden. Fiscal policy is analyzed in relation to economic growth, standard of living, and distribution of income and wealth. This monograph is intended for economists and students taking economics-related courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics and Economic Policy in the UK since 1964: The Jekyll and Hyde Years examines the economic policies that have been pursued by successive governments in Britain since 1964 and how such policies have been influenced by two sets of factors: politics and Keynesian demand management. The two basic failures of British economic policy since 1964 are highlighted, namely, the failure to establish a workable long-term incomes policy and the failure to achieve a high and stable rate of industrial investment. This book is comprised of seven chapters and begins with a background on the British economy until 1964, with emphasis on the economic problems faced by the country, including rising prices. The four basic objectives of economic policy to which both Labor and Conservative parties subscribe—full employment, a reasonably rapid growth rate, stable prices, and a satisfactory balance of payments—are discussed. The next chapter focuses on the Labor Party's 1964 Election Manifesto and how the economy fared from October 1964 to March 1966. Subsequent chapters evaluate the economic policies of the Labour government during the period April 1966-June 1970, including devaluation and incomes policy; economic policies adopted by the Conservative government from June 1970 to February 1974; and the country's economic situation since February 1974. The final chapter considers four factors—structural, technical, managerial, and political—that were responsible for much of what went wrong with the British economy since 1964. This monograph will be of interest to economists, political scientists, politicians, and economic policymakers.

This book argues that the objectives of macroeconomic policy have not been constant; that the emphasis has shifted from one item to another over time; and that this uncertainty and inconsistency over objectives goes a long way to explaining why macroeconomics management has not been a startling success.

Book excerpt: Examining the innovations of economic policy in the UK, France and Germany in the 1960s, this book originally published in 1968, assesses the degree of success of these policies and draws conclusion for the oreintation of future policy. The book contrasts the long history of national planning in France with the equally long history of anti-p[lanning ideology in Germany and by close examination of the actual policies, brings out the relaities that lie behind the public attitudes. It discusses the problems which lead to planning interventions, followed by a chapter on the UK, France and Germany. It examines in details particular adaptations of policy: namely quantitative programming, monetary policy, fiscal policy, public expenditures, regional policy, prices and incomes policy and the balance of payments, comparing developments in all 3 countries. It also looks at the beginning of economic planning at the level of the EEC, with particular implications for British entry.
