Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Promised Land and Other Poems So we sailed and sailed over stormy seas, till we came to a pleasant land, Where forever were peace and happiness, and plenty was on each hand; And no man wronged his brother there, for no man counted it gain To live by the sweat of another's brow, or to joy at another's pain. And the strong man there was a kindly man, and aided the one who was weak, And for those who were simple and trusting men, their wiser brothers would speak; And creed, or color, or land, or birth, caused no man to hate another. For the same red blood filled each man's veins, and every man was a brother. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Promised Land a Drama of a People's Deliverance, in Five Acts, (in the Elizabethan Style) With regard to the last-mentioned point it may be objected that the women in the play are allowed more scope and freedom than is usual in the East but a reference to the Bible will show that the women of Israel in the early days probably had a good deal of independence. I think I am right in saying that the wearing of a veil by a woman is only twice alluded to in the Mosaic books, and then apparently as something out of the ordinary course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To discover how women constructed their own mythology of the West, Kolodny examines the evidence of three generations of women's writing about the frontier. She finds that, although the American frontiersman imagined the wilderness as virgin land, an unspoiled Eve to be taken, the pioneer woman at his side dreamed more modestly of a garden to be cultivated. Both intellectual and cultural history, this volume continues Kolodny's study of frontier mythology begun in The Lay of the Land.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Playmates in Egypt: And Other StoriesHave you ever wondered how the Jew ish holidays started? I am going to tell you about them in their historical order, beginning with the first of our holidays, Passover, which tells of the dawn of free dom for Israel, just as the Fourth of July is the birthday of liberty for the Ameri can people. We will follow our Jewish ancestors through the wilderness as they journey to the Promised Land; we will celebrate with them the high festivals in the golden days when our own kings ruled in Jerusalem, until at last we reach the time when Rabbi Akiba, after the destruction of the second Temple, taught the Torah to his devoted pupils. But, perhaps, you may not care to read the entire volume, story after story, in an evening or two.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Promised Land a Drama of a People's Deliverance, in Five Acts, (in the Elizabethan Style) Upon the whole I conclude with this; the wisdom of the primitive ages was either great of lucky: great, if they knew what they were doing and invented the figure to shadow the meaning: lucky, if without meaning or intending it they fell upon matter which gives occasion to such worthy contemplations... And what if we find here and there a bit of real history underneath, or some things added only for ornament, or times confounded, or part of one fable transferred to another and a new allegory introduced? Such things could not but occur in stories invented (as these were) by men who both lived in different ages and had different ends, some being more modern, some more ancient, - some having in their thoughts natural philosophy, and others civil affairs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harp of Canaan: Or Selections From the Poets on Bible Historical Incidents Of all tasks which combine dignity with pleasure, and importance with cheering encouragement, there is none surely that can be compared to that of awakening in young people the perception and the enjoyment of poetry. It is the only branch of education in which three quarters of the work is done for us already. Yet, though it be at once the easiest and the most delightful of the teacher's duties, it has been, perhaps, in many instances the most neglected of all. To many, we have no doubt, the undertaking seems visionary and impracticable. Such will admit that it may be good, in an intellectual point of view, to make a child learn verses by heart, and right, hi a moral and religious one, that he should be able to repeat hymns and religious poems; but to expect from him sympathy or pleasure in poetry as such, is, in their creed, to expect an impossibility. Hence, perhaps, it is that so little attention has been paid to the quality of the verses contained in books of poetry and elocution from which young people are to learn. Till very lately they were all but made up of the very refuse of the English language. What wonder, then, that children should have confirmed the theory which held poetical enjoyment to be impossible at their age! If there be no valid objection to addressing the minds of children with poetry, let us study to do so, for there is all imaginable argument in its favour. Poetry is the safest, as it is the highest exercise of the imagination. The terrors to which that power so naturally does homage are shorn of their direst and most baleful aspects, when they are brought within the realm of beauty.
