Book excerpt: At least since the publication of Isaiah Berlin's famous essay "Two Concepts of Liberty" nearly half a century ago, political philosophers have argued vigorously over the relative merits of "positive" and "negative" accounts of freedom. Matthew Kramer writes squarely within the negative-liberty tradition, but he incorporates a number of ideas that are quite often associated with theories of positive liberty. Much of The Quality of Freedom is devoted to elaborating the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of particular freedoms and unfreedoms; however, the book's cardinal objective is to establish the measurability of each person's overall freedom and of each society's aggregate freedom. On the one hand, Kramer contends that the existence of any particular instance of liberty or unfreedom is a matter of fact that can be confirmed or disconfirmed without any reliance on evaluative or normative considerations. On the other hand, he argues that the extent of each person's overall freedom or unfreedom cannot be ascertained entirely in the absence of evaluative assumptions. By combining those two positions and developing them in detail, Kramer pits himself against all positive accounts of liberty and most negative accounts. In the course of so doing, he aims to demonstrate the rigorous measurability of overall liberty - something that many writers on freedom have casually dismissed as impossible. Although Kramer concentrates principally on constructing a systematic analysis of sociopolitical freedom, he engages critically with the work of many of the leading contemporary writers on the topic.

Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book reveals what it takes for managers of any generation to succeed in this fast-paced and exciting new environment. Command-and-control may have once been an effective model in managing the large numbers of cookie-cutter clones that business programs were producing faster than anyone could say “MBA,” but the rapid change and increasing complexity of the twenty-first century have rendered that model obsolete. For the most part, today’s managers who were trained in the old ways are not adept to succeed in the current work environment that has evolved from take-it-or-leave-it hierarchies to collaborative networks of workers and managers feeding off each other’s ideas to build the business together. The new age of mass collaboration demands a new and extremely different model to manage by today--wiki management. Featuring enlightening examples from forward-thinking companies including Google, Whole Foods, Linux, and Wikipedia, Wiki Management outlines the revolutionary, necessary steps companies must take to: Leverage their collective intelligence Effectively integrate diverse points of view Transition leaders from the role of “boss” to that of facilitator Make “delighting customers“ more important than pleasing superiors Achieve a shared and actionable understanding of the key drivers of business success It’s a different world today than the one you were educated in, trained in, and found great success in. This “wiki” world has reshaped both the work we do and the way we do it, making mass collaboration not only possible but usually the best solution.

It is a mindset, a form of mental discipline that enables the warrior to face any challenge with grace and strength. In The Warrior Mind, Jim Pritchard, a disciple of legendary Ninjitsu and Taijitsu masters, reveals how we can adopt this mindset whether or not we practice the physical components of the martial arts. Pritchard describes six mental principles: * Attentive curiosity: slow down, observe calmly * Undulation: move side-to-side to build strength * Clear intent: know when and how to act * Grappling: engage the issue or opponent with confidence * Rolling waves: demonstrate persistence and the will to triumph * Whirlwind: when necessary, unleash an all-out onslaught Using colorful anecdotes, insightful examples, and inspiring stories, Pritchard shows how these six principles will help readers maintain focus and balance -- no matter what obstacles await them.

Book excerpt: In A Second Wind Pastor Arni Jacobson and writer Robert Mims explore what happens when lifes greatest successes and spiritual victories are unexpectedly followed by stunning setbacks, doubt and depression. That journey begins with the ancient Jewish prophet Elijah and his confrontation with the wicked King Ahab and his murderous queen, Jezebel over the soul of Israel. Interspersed with Elijahs story are modern-day examples from the famous Dr. Gary Smalley, Pastors John and Joel Osteen, Pastor Rich Wilkerson and others as well as everyday people Pastor Jacobson has met and ministered to during times of grief, sickness, divorce and derailed dreams. All these accounts are connected by the need for the spiritual equivalent of what all long-distance runners crave the breath and grace to finish what remains ahead. That second wind is the blessing to rebound from victory-to-valley experiences to even greater triumphs in life. Arni Jacobson is a pastor, mentor, church planter, motivator, author, father, and grandfather. He loves to build lasting relationships and see people come to a real understanding of their relationship with Christ. Over more than 30 successful years in ministry, Arni has built dynamic churches in Merrill, Wisconsin; Salt Lake City, Utah; Salem, Oregon; and pioneered a church of more than 3,000 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. In 2007, Arni and his son, Chad, embarked on a new ministry, returning to Utah to co-found City Church. Arni continues to be a much sought after speaker and counselor to churches both in the United States and abroad. Arni and his wife, Jan, and have two children, and are very proud of their grandchildren.

Book excerpt: Here is a story, in thinly disguised fictional form, of Plains Indians, especially a Cheyenne chief, Whirlwind—his manner of life, his beliefs, and particularly, his love of his son. The villain is a Mandan who is given refuge in the Cheyenne camp and then wreaks havoc with the lives of his hosts. He causes a battle with the Sioux, steals the chief’s favorite wife, and slays the chief’s young son. Whirlwind’s revenge for the death of his beloved son provides a dramatic climax. Happy Hunting Grounds recaptures Cheyenne life on the plains. The battles, celebrations, and lifeways of the Indians—Sioux, Cheyennes, and Mandans—are accurately and graphically portrayed. This volume is illustrated with drawings and paintings by Frederick Weygold, reflecting his own long association with the Plains tribes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberia, a small West African nation imploded in a civil war that began on December 24, 1989. By the time the war ended fourteen years later, more than 250,000 lives had been taken. Many people sought refuge in camps throughout West Africa. In the war, children were trained to become killing machines, and women and young girls were held as sex slaves. Charles Taylor, the main mastermind behind this rebellion, was elected President of Liberia in 1997. Liberians thought that his presidency would lead to the end of the civil war, but it only extended the war. Adding to the pressure, Taylor faced accusations of war crimes. He relinquished power in August 2003 and was escorted to Nigeria where he was subsequently arrested and taken to the International Criminal Court at The Hague. Whirlwind of African Insanity is not just my story. It resonates with the countless voices of children who suffer and die in wars about which they know nothing. The book also provides some of the reasons why Africa is and may forever remain plagued. It presents two arguments about the real causes of Africas disasters and is written on behalf of underprivileged children whose cries for help are drowned in oceans of selfish politics and whose lives are buried in the explosions of wars. It is also a story about survival in hellish conditions and optimism when there is nothing about which to be optimistic.

Book excerpt: A widow for thirty years, Lydia Hughes has a calm, relatively predictable life of work and living alone. But when she meets cardiologist Duncan Stewart while attending a conference in Seattle, her world is turned inside out. In slightly over forty-eight hours, she’s engaged to be married and trying to decide what to keep and what to leave when she moves to Washington state. But there’s a catch. Duncan’s sister, Penny, is jealous of any woman Duncan cares about, especially Lydia. Duncan is certain Penny was responsible for the deaths of their parents, and he fears that she intends to harm Lydia. As a physician in a stressful specialty, he is used to getting what he wants, and he is as determined to keep Lydia safe as he is to making her his wife. No matter his determination, “accidents” and “near misses” happen, which endanger Lydia’s life and make her question just how well she knows the man she is going to marry. It seems even Mother Nature wants her dead when a natural disaster rips through her town. Lydia is pulled into a vortex of danger, and she comes to realize that in spite of Duncan’s promises to keep her safe, she alone must face Penny in a final confrontation. And only one of them can survive.
