Pictures, then, should be constantly used in the earliest grades of school. They will not only give the child new ideas, but will also enable him to express these ideas. For this purpose the Child Life Composition Pictures are grouped, according to grades, as follows: Oral Composition or Language Lessons: During the first and second years of the child's school-life, the aim of the teacher is to get the child to express himself in his own words - oral composition. In order to gain this end, the following method should he followed: Place a picture on the desks in front of each child - picture-side downward. When the command is given each child picks up his picture and looks at it - one, two, or three minutes. Then the teacher says to the first child. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land's End: And Other Stories Mr. Steele's pictorial sense is somewhat akin to that of Fromentin in Dominique, though less hard by virtue of his sense of wonder. The stories collected in this volume have, in fact, a quality of romantic escape rare in our American life, and so correspondingly rare in our American literature. Landscape, with its human fore ground, gives Mr. Steele a sense of liberation, so that it is a refuge for him from the impact Of facts, so falsely called reality by most men. He is, therefore, a romantic realist, who refuses to escape from life, but contents himself by making a truce with it. If his stories reveal a certain nostalgia, it is a personal nostalgia, and it does not color his interpretation of life. You feel that his quarrel is with the matter-of-fact rather than with civilization. In this respect he is to be contrasted with Synge, though there is much resemblance in other ways between the two writers. TO Synge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story-Land Dramatic Reader Some of the stories in this book have been known in narrative form to generations of American boys and girls. Others have been known and loved by many more generations of children in far-off lands and times. They have been gathered from the child lore of the world. In an effort to appeal to the many different interests found in the average class, a great variety of story types has been included in this little book. Some of the stories belong to the more primitive, the simplest, form of folk-tales, others are more complex in thought and plot. None are beyond third-year children. Every story has been dramatized, read, and retold by the pupils in several schools. The simpler stories are to be read and passed over. Some of the others may well be worked over and presented as finished plays in the school-room or for more formal entertainments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Thousand Miles Through Story Land Some folks still think of the Hills as a wild region where Indians put on war paint, cow boys shoot up the town, and holdups and scalping parties are still in vogue, as in the early days of Calamity Jane. We reach Deadwood, that once wicked city, at about '9 p. M. And, of course, wonder if we will be waylaid before a lodging place can be found, but happily, we do not find it such a. Bad city after all. We soon find comfortable quarters and sleep, only to be awakened by Old Sol dashing a ray of gold into our face. A splendid breakfast and we are hustling to see the sights, and they were many and charming. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Since the early 1920s the name Bluebird has been synonymous with world speed record breaking on land and water. Driven first by Sir Malcolm Campbell, then his son Donald, and latterly by Donald's nephew Donald Wales in electric powered vehicles, they have consistently pushed records ever higher. This book is the story of the design and construction of the fastest of the Bluebirds, the Campbell-Norris 7 (CN7). This car, now resident in the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu in England, is the most sophisticated design ever produced for a wheel-driven record breaker. Using methods and materials developed for the aircraft industry, the CN7, given suitable running conditions, was capable in 1960 of a speed exceeding that produced by the present wheel-driven record holder 19 years later. Donald Stevens, the author, was first employed by the designers Norris Brothers Ltd as a design draughtsman on the Bluebird K7 hydroplane. After completing his National Service in the RAF, he rejoined the company to work with the two chief designers developing the specification for CN7, and he later became project co-ordinator for its construction.
