Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the workshop was: To present the state of knowledge to the user community, representatives from local, state, and federal agencies, oil industry, manufacturers, and researchers; to reach consensus on the present status of decision making to allow the use of in situ burning and to prioritize research and information needs to support decisions on the use of in situ burning of spilled oil. To facilitate the discussions, preprints of technical papers were distributed at registration. Participants were divided into two breakout panels: Environmental and human health; Operational implications. The panels examined the information presented, determined a consensus and developed a list of priority needs. The results of the workshop will be used by MMS to refine future research efforts to address the most import issues developed by the participants.

The workshop goals were: (1) to present the state of knowledge to decision makers from local, state & federal agencies, responders, environmentalists, academia, industry & the user community; & to prioritize research & information needs to support decisions on the use of ISBOS. Presentations included: (1) a historical perspective covering the more than 40 years since the first documented use of ISBOS; (2) some form of pre-approvals for ISBOS should be in place for almost all areas of the U.S.; & (3) the operational aspects of ISBOS. Book Synopsis In-Situ Burning for Oil Spill Countermeasures by : Merv Fingas
Download or read book In-Situ Burning for Oil Spill Countermeasures written by Merv Fingas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shelving Guide: Environmental Engineering In-situ burning is recognized as a viable alternative for cleaning up oil spills on land and water. It can rapidly reduce the volume of spilled oil and eliminate the need to collect, store, transport, and dispose of recovered oil, and can also shorten the response time to a spill, thus reducing the chances that the spill will spread on the water surface or further into land. This book will serve as a comprehensive reference for all aspects of in-situ burning of oil spills and include the scientific aspects of the burning process and the related effects, as well as practical information about the procedures to be followed and equipment required for carrying out an in-situ burn. Features Serves as a complete source of information on in-situ burning as well as practical guide on how to implement the procedures. Explains procedures for burning in different situations, including on water, land, and ice. Provides information on worker health and safety precautions during burning. Covers several different types of emissions, their environmental fate, and how to monitor them. Includes numerous illustrative case studies.

Book Synopsis Emergency Response Management of Offshore Oil Spills by : Nicholas P. Cheremisinoff
Download or read book Emergency Response Management of Offshore Oil Spills written by Nicholas P. Cheremisinoff and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-12-28 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EMERGENCY RESPONSE MANAGEMENT OF OFFSHORE Examines the Deepwater Horizon disaster and offers processes for safety and environmental protection Though renewable energy is a growing piece of the energy “pie,” fossil fuels still dominate our energy supplies and will continue to do so for decades. This makes offshore drilling, especially in places like the Gulf of Mexico and North Sea, extremely important for the future of the world’s energy supply. Unfortunately, the world has been witnessing, over and over again, accidents, deadly explosions, spills, and environmental disasters that could have been avoided with proper safety and environmental processes put in place. The Deepwater Horizon catastrophe is the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history and an ecological nightmare of epic proportions. Emergency Response Management of Offshore Oil Spills aids in the response of this and future disasters by providing this handy reference volume for engineers, managers, and other emergency responders. This timely publication outlines the toxic nature of crude oil, covering properties of crude oil, chemical composition, toxicity to humans and marine life, and investigates the impact of oil spills from historical case studies. The current arsenals available to address oil spills, such as dispersants, absorbing booms, skimming, and other methods, are also discussed. Technologies that are rapidly being developed to address the Gulf Oil Spill are considered, along with extensive information on chemical protective clothing, air monitoring, respiratory protection, management of waste, and much more. The book concludes with a chapter discussing responsible care and takes a critical look at the reasons why the Deepwater Horizon rig catastrophe happened and examines the follow-up that ensued after the incident. Emergency Response Management of Offshore Oil Spills provides: Examples of 26 major oil spills ranked from largest to smallest, describing each incident and the amount of oil spilled Recommendations and guidance on proper air monitoring methods Suggestions related to protective garments such as respirators Comparative product information on chemical dispersants, shoreline bleaching and cleaning chemicals Detailed toxicity data for humans and marine life Discussions in the areas of deficiencies in responding to spills and why the oil industry needs to be more responsive to developing technologies Hazardous materials protocols, including OSHA- and EPA- recommended safe work practices for dealing with hazardous materials
Book Synopsis In-situ Burning of Oil Spills by : Howard R. Baum
Download or read book In-situ Burning of Oil Spills written by Howard R. Baum and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1991 a series of 14 mesoscale fire experiments were performed to measure the burning characteristics of crude oil on salt water. These oil burns in a pan ranged in size from 6 m square to 15 m square. Results of the measurements for burning rate and smoke emissions are compared to those from previous smaller scale burns conducted both in the U.S. and in Japan.
