Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The questions examined by the authors are what happens to human mobility in a globalising world? How does globalisation impact on people in different regions of the world? How do people react to the differential developmental impact of globalisation? Is there a case of circular and cumulative causation which results in developed regions becoming more developed, and less developed regions losing out, even given the little development they have achieved? The first and second parts examine the long history of international migration in Nigeria, from the trans-Saharan trade and trans-Atlantic slave trade, to the later migrations to other parts of West Africa, the rest of Africa, and Europe and North America. The third part examines how migration is being managed in Nigeria and in the host countries; the fourth part considers the developmental implications.

Book excerpt: In his striking debut collection, Greener Pastures, Michael Wehunt shows why he is a powerful new voice in horror and weird fiction. From the round-robin, found-footage nightmare of “October Film Haunt: Under the House” to the jazz-soaked “The Devil Under the Maison Blue,” selected for both The Year’s Best Dark Fantasy & Horror and Year’s Best Weird Fiction, these beautifully crafted, emotionally resonant stories speak of the unknown encroaching upon the familiar, the inscrutable power of grief and desire, and the thinness between all our layers. Where nature rubs against small towns, in mountains and woods and bedrooms, here is strangeness seen through a poet’s eye. They say there are always greener pastures. These stories consider the cost of that promise.

Book excerpt: Brown is a renowned philanthropist who runs an illicit drug and human trafficking organization with his notorious team of top security personnel, all of whom work within the government at various levels, both state and federal. Every wrong road leads to a wrong destination. Lucas was among those who Brown lured to Russia for a better life, and Lucas has made a promise to a woman in Nigeria with whom he has a child. His dream is to get a good education and live large when he returns home, but his older brothers, who are sponsoring his education, abandon him. Lucas becomes one of the stranded Africans in Russia. Thrown out in the streets of Moscow by his newfound love and the mother of his other child a baby girl, Lucas joins his classmates, who after graduating, turned into peddlers. Six years later he is caught by the cops and jailed. Will he survive? Soon, the truth about Browns phony overseas scholarships and job opportunities for the village youth is revealed. The government starts the elimination of the enemies of rural development; neither guilty nor innocent are safe. In Search of Greener Pastures is an exhilarating tale that reveals some unfortunate realities of our time and unmasks both the deadly activities of illicit drug peddlers in Russia and the general attitude of Russians towards immigrants. This is a well-told story that can serve as a tool for anti-drug and anti-human trafficking campaigns, which aim to educate the youth in Africa, especially those of school age. It is a story of greed, adventure, retribution, mystery, destiny, and regrets. This work is a tool for campaigning against drug trafficking, where millions of people find death and destruction.

Book excerpt: History is filled with reports of war and poverty, accounts that rattle off numbers, names, dates, and locations without providing any sense of the experience itself. With heart, humor, and honesty, author Dandy Ahaoma Ahuruonye offers a unique glimpse into Igbo life in the wake of the 1960s Biafra-Nigeria War. A remarkable piece of African literature, "Long Search for Greener Pastures" tells the inspiring story of young Chike who realizes from an early age that his family's future depends on him. As he tries to navigate his community's competing beliefs of animism and Christianity, as well as traditional versus modern thought, Chike begins to recognize that if he and his family are ever to break free from the interminable cycle of scarcity, he must follow an uncharted path away from everything he knows. As he journeys alone into the world beyond, Chike experiences even more cruelty, prejudice, and loss. But as he bravely presses on, searching for any signs of hope or opportunity, he encounters unexpected help amid the harm when he finds friends who continue to point him in the right direction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three brothers who hail from the poor Eastern Cape Province embark on pursuing businesses from scratch. The brothers, Joseph, Shane and Eric are saddened by the ailing governance of South Africa, and they decide to take matters into their own hands in the form of building businesses that will create more job opportunities for the black community, especially those who live in the most remote abandoned areas of this beautiful and declared democratic country. The brothers are more aware of the fact that the main purpose of business is to generate profit, and not to over-indulge in charity, hence they're planning to do everything with an open mind. The brothers decide to leave their comfort-zone and focus their energies on creating empires that will grow into irresistible brands. In spite of their huge ambitions yet they understand the power of taking baby-steps, one step at a time; which includes learning and researching. The brothers' passion for business and South Africa proves to be their recipe for success. The brothers haven't forgotten their roots as well since they want to be loyal and relate to the Qitsi community, their birth-place. This doesn't mean that they will jeopardise their business savvy for the sake of pleasing their community though. The brothers want to show their community that a man's success is never determined by their background, but by their hunger to succeed and willingness to enter the unknown. Starting a business from scratch is a daunting task which requires one to develop thick skin, learning not to take a "no" for an answer in the process; hence the brothers are well prepared to face and defeat all these challenges. They make every effort in their power to break new grounds and to leave no stone unturned. Becoming the greatest business trio of all time is their drive and burning desire, not only for the sake of enriching themselves, but of sustaining the wellness of their employees as well. Joseph and his brothers want to ensure that Qitsi becomes alive with possibilities and a go-to area for job seekers and tourists. They believe that through their willingness for a better South Africa and prosperous future they can turn Qitsi into a sanctuary place for people who're eager to better their own economical status. The brothers' courage to triumph over obstacles prompts them to seek coaching services from Dr Charles, a renowned and award-winning global business mentor and mogul. They also join forces with Professor Miles who works as a business analysis and listing officer at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), Miss Paulina of PVC Transport Services and Paulina Enterprise fame. Along the way the brothers meet and get to know an estranged coloured man by the name of Douglas Hendler, whom they learn that his life became messed up after being manipulated and blindfolded by his former business partners, Dave Dickenson and his brothers and became the victim of business fronting. Another biggest emotional scar in Douglas Hendler's soul is the loss of his entire family members including his mother, wife and kids who were all set alight by his enemies and competitors. As if that was not enough, while Douglas was still soaring in the pain, he found out that all his businesses were burnt into ashes by the same men responsible for five deaths of his loved ones. The brothers (Joseph, Shane and Eric) decide to offer Douglas Hendler the emotional support, and taking him under their wings, thus encouraging him to deal with his exploiters and claim his rightful spot as the Executive Director of Douglas Hendler Transport Services, the same company he was kicked out of by his exploiters after he poured all of his savings into its development. The involvement of The Scorpion Legal Protection in the case proves to be the biggest breakthrough for Douglas Hendler when the case wraps in his favour, enabling him to take his rightful position while locking Dave Dickenson and his brothers behind bars for life

Book excerpt: "The most wonderful thing in the universe, is our Savior's love for his own people. Christ bears with all our infirmities," writes Miller in one of his brief daily mediations. "He never tires of our inconsistencies and unfaithfulnesses. He goes on forever forgiving and forgetting. He follows us when we go astray. He does not forget us—when we forget him. Through all our stumbling and sinning, through all our provocation and disobedience, through all our waywardnesses and stubbornnesses, through all our doubting and unfaithfulness, he clings to us still, and never lets us go. Having loved his own, he loves unto the end."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gladys left a comfortable life in Nigeria with family to study in England. Her husband, John, embedded in the traditional African culture, failed to adapt to life in England and left his wife to cope with the difficult lifestyle. Her marriage suffered and she experienced nostalgia and heartache. She left a collective society and found herself in an individualistic society where no one cared if you existed or not. This, to her, was a huge cultural shock. She was faced with racial discrimination due to the colour of her skin and accent. She witnessed first-hand, lack of respect for cultural diversity by the Whites. The plight of the ethnic minority, especially the Blacks, saddened her. They were always at the bottom of the ladder of preference. In a society where stereotyping and assumption determines acceptance or rejection, she questioned the greed of the African leaders, especially those in her country, Nigeria. These leaders make life at home difficult and unbearable for the people and they pretend all is well. Their citizens, in search of greener pastures, blindly subject themselves to voluntary exile and a new form of modern day slavery to the West, in the form of brain drain. Highly skilled and qualified professionals with University degrees from developing countries end up as menial workers in unskilled jobs like cleaners, care support workers, security guards, waitresses and check-out staff. They hardly get decent jobs because of their skin colour and accent. It is often difficult to retrace their steps and return home as all has been sacrificed for the sojourn. The role of the West in the indirect modern day slavery is also examined.
