Book excerpt: Current Automated Aerial Refueling (AAR) research requires precision modeling and simulation of the refueling process between a KC-135 tanker aircraft and an unmanned aircraft. In order to meet this requirement, both steady-state and dynamic interactions between the tanker aircraft, the refueling boom, and the receiver aircraft must be accurately represented. Boom orientation and motion is known to change the trim of the tanker aircraft, which in turn influences the formation flying and station keeping tasks involved in current Air Force AAR concepts of operation. This paper describes the development of the coupled equations of motion for the refueling boom, which model its motion and its dynamic interactions with the tanker. For the purposes of this investigation, and to validate the boom model dynamics, the coupled boom model is first implemented as a boom-only simulation. The coupled model is compared to two existing boom-only models: one of which has been used for aerial refueling improvement studies, and the other is currently being used for boom operator training. Steady-state and dynamic responses to control inputs to the boom are calculated by the coupled boom model, then compared to those calculated using the existing models.

Book excerpt: The report presents the rationale, methodology and results of a study of the training capabilities of the Boom Operator Part-Task Trainer (BOPPT), an air refueling simulator. The study was performed as part of an Air Force Initial Operational Test and Evaluation (IOT & E) of the device. Actually, three transfer of training sub-studies were conducted simultaneously: the first with undergraduate boom operators in the Combat Crew Training Squadron (CCTS) phase of instruction; the second with instructor boom operators in the Central Flight Instructor Course (CFIC); and the third with highly experienced boom operators who were maintaining essential skills. In the CCTS application, it was found that all student groups trained in the BOPTT required significantly fewer air refueling attempts (50 versus 71) to reach proficiency in KC-135A air refueling skills than did conventionally trained students. In boom operations, procedures, and communications, the BOPTT trained students were equal or superior to the students in the standard syllabus. Also, proper utilization of the BOPTT could avoid over one million dollars in training costs per year.

The inflight refueling operator's primary job is to assist the pilot in conducting the air refueling. The inflight refueling operator, commonly referred to as the 'boom operator', visually or verbally directs the receiver aircraft pilot into the refueling envelope and then uses the static boom or the drogue to conduct refueling. Additionally the boom operator serves as loadmaster when the aircraft is carrying cargo or passengers.

Book excerpt: Section 1081 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008 calls for the Secretary of the Air Force to conduct a pilot program to assess the feasibility and advisability of utilizing commercial fee-for-service air refueling tanker aircraft for Air Force operations. Air refueling occurs using two methods: flying boom or probe and drogue Boom in-flight air refueling is accomplished by the Boom Operator, flying the tanker's refueling boom into the receiver's receptacle. Once connected, the tanker pumps fuel from its fuel tanks into the receiver's fuel tanks. This is the primary method used by the Air Force. Probe and drogue air refueling is accomplished by a probe-equipped receiver flying the receiver aircraft's probe into the tanker's drogue, a basket attached to the end of a flexible hose or the tankers boom. Once connected, the tanker transfers fuel to the receiver aircraft. This is the method used by the Navy. There are no commercial boom-equipped refueling aircrafts. The fee-for-service air refueling pilot program anticipates an 18 to 36 month preparatory period during which a boom-equipped air refueling aircraft will be developed.
