Book excerpt: In a Glass Darkly is a collection of five different tales, presented as selections from the posthumous papers of the occult detective Dr. Martin Hesselius. The title is taken from 1 Corinthians 13:12, a deliberate misquotation of the passage which describes humanity as perceiving the world "through a glass darkly". "Green Tea" - An English clergyman named Jennings confides to Hesselius that he is being followed by a demon in the form of an ethereal monkey, invisible to everyone else, which is trying to invade his mind and destroy his life. Hesselius writes letters to a Dutch colleague about the victim's condition, which gets steadily worse with time as the creature steps up its methods, all of which are purely psychological. T "The Familiar"- A sea captain, living in Dublin, is stalked by "The Watcher", a strange dwarf who resembles a person from his past. "Mr. Justice Harbottle" - A cruel judge in the Court of Common Pleas, Elijah Harbottle, finds himself under attack by vengeful spirits, and in a disturbing dream he is condemned to death by a monstrous doppelgänger. The story is set between 1746 and 1748 "The Room in the Dragon Volan" - notable mystery story, in 26 chapters, which includes the theme of premature burial. "Carmilla"- A tale of a lesbian vampire, set in Styria, Austria. This story was to greatly influence Bram Stoker in writing Dracula. Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (1814 – 1873) was an Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels. He was a leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era. M. R. James described Le Fanu as "absolutely in the first rank as a writer of ghost stories".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a Glass Darkly is a collection of five short stories, presented as posthumous papers of cases of the “metaphysical” doctor Dr. Martin Hesselius. First appearing in “Green Tea,” originally published in 1869, Dr. Hesselius became one of the first literary occult detectives. J. Sheridan Le Fanu often made revisions to his work and re-released several under new names, including two from In a Glass Darkly: “The Familiar,” a revised version of “The Watcher,” published in 1851, and “Mr. Justice Harbottle,” a revised version of “An Account of Some Strange Disturbances in Aungier Street,” published in 1853. Most notably, this collection includes what is likely Sheridan Le Fanu’s most famous work, “Carmilla.” A young countess turned vampire, Countess Mircalla uses the anagram of her name, Carmilla, to disguise herself in order to prey on unsuspecting young women. “Carmilla” would heavily influence Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which would later become the prototypical vampire archetype. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: In a Glass Darkly by J. Sheridan Le Fanu is a collection of supernatural tales that plunge readers into a world of mystery, horror, and psychological intrigue. Set in the eerie landscapes of nineteenth-century Europe, these haunting narratives explore the darker aspects of human nature and the supernatural forces that lurk just beyond the realm of perception. From the chilling tale of a haunted English country house in »Green Tea« to the enigmatic story of a sinister doppelgänger in »The Familiar,« Le Fanu's stories are infused with a sense of creeping dread and mounting suspense. In »Carmilla,« readers encounter the beguiling yet malevolent figure of a female vampire who preys upon the innocent, blurring the lines between desire and danger. JOSEPH SHERIDAN LE FANU [1814-1873] was an Irish mystery and horror author. He had an enormous influence on the horror genre in the 19th and 20th century, especially through his championing of tone and effect rather than shock factor. Among his most noted work is the lesbian vampire novella Carmilla [1872] and mystery Uncle Silas [1864].

Book excerpt: Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873) was an Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels. He was a leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era. In a Glass Darkly (1872) is a collection of five stories of the macabre, presented as selections from the posthumous papers of the fictional occult detective Dr. Martin Hesselius. The last of these, the novella "Carmilla," is not only Le Fanu's most famous work, but is a significant landmark in the development of vampire fiction. In particular, it was a major influence on Bram Stoker's later Dracula. "Carmilla" is frequently published on its own and has been repeatedly adapted to film, opera, theater, television, and even as a web series. This book is in the Deseret Alphabet, a phonetic alphabet for writing English developed in the mid-19th century at the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah).

Do the departed seek to make contact with us? The conviction that both things are true was the cornerstone of spiritualism, a kind of do-it-yourself religion that swept the Western world from the 1850s to the 1930s. Prominent artists and poets, prime ministers and scientists, all joined hands around the séance table. But the movement's most famous spokesman by far was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, whose public quarrels with Houdini over the truth of spiritualism made headlines across the country. Known to the world as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle had undergone what many considered an enigmatic transformation, turning his back on the hyper-rational Holmes and plunging into the supernatural. What was it that convinced a brilliant man, the creator of the great exemplar of cold, objective thought, that there was a reality beyond reality? Though most modern sources make Conan Doyle out to be a kindly but credulous old fool, and though the spiritualist era was rife with fraud, Stefan Bechtel and Laurence Roy Stains take a closer look. They reexamine the old records of trance mediums and séances, and they discover that what Conan Doyle and his colleagues uncovered is as difficult to dismiss now as it was then.

Book excerpt: In a Glass Darkly (1872) is a collection of five tales presented as items drawn from the posthumous papers of Dr. Martin Hesselius, an occult detective. The short stories "Green Tea," "The Familiar," and "Mr. Justice Harbottle" each include elements which appear to be otherworldly, but which can be explained scientifically. The novella "The Room in the Dragon Volant" is a mystery, featuring a slow-witted narrator whose chivalrous nature gets him into trouble. Finally, the novella "Carmilla," Le Fanu's most famous work, is a fully supernatural tale featuring a lesbian vampire. This story greatly influenced Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897), along with films like Vampyr (1932), and The Vampire Lovers (1970). Collectively, the stories in this volume represent some of Sheridan Le Fanu's finest and best known works of gothic fiction. The Classroom Classics collection from Necropolis Press features classic works of fiction with new cover art, introductions, explanatory footnotes, and study questions for classroom use.
