There are many factors which can contribute to this. One of the factors can be the quality of teachers themselves. This study was set to improve teachers’ pedagogical practices through Lesson Study in Secondary Schools in Maseru Lesotho. Firstly, the study established teachers’ understanding and their pedagogical practices before and after an intervention could be given. The study also sought to explore if there were any changes in teachers’ classroom practices and also if there was any impact on learners’ understanding of mathematics after teachers had undergone Lesson Study training. The challenges that teachers experienced in implementing Lesson Study were also looked at. The study adopted a mixed method approach which employed a questionnaire, observations and interviews. The first phase of the study consisted of 200 secondary mathematics teachers in Maseru to whom questionnaire was administered. The second phase of the study was made up of 18 teachers from three secondary schools based in Maseru. These teachers received a one day intensive training on Lesson Study which was followed up by another one day school-based intensive training. In this phase data was collected using classroom observations and interviews. The findings from the study indicated that Lesson Study had positive impact on both teachers and learners. As a result of participating in Lesson Study, teachers were now able to reflect on their practices, and this had improved their pedagogical practices, and content knowledge. There had also been an improved teacher collaboration. All these attributes led to improved teacher-confidence in the teaching of mathematics. The results also revealed learners whose teachers participated in LS were motivated, participated more in classroom discussions and showed more understanding of mathematical concepts. However, the findings had revealed that time was a major of challenge encountered during implementation of Lesson Study in Lesotho. Teachers did not have a common time for meetings due to their packed timetables. A model of Lesson Study which emerged from the findings of this study showed that unlike in other LS models where one teacher presents the research lesson and others observe and take notes on learners’ learning, the Lesotho model showed that teachers used team-teaching.

Book excerpt: In Lesotho, there is a gap between what the Government of Lesotho (GOL) and the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) expect for teaching and learning in primary schools and the quality of actual teaching practices of rural primary school teachers. While MOET promotes the use of child-centered, interactive pedagogies, classroom teaching remains largely teacher-centered and focused on preparing for national exams. This study explores reasons for this gap, focusing on the teaching practices used by teachers and their perceptions of their skills and training. A case study approach was used to gather data from a wide variety of sources. Interviews with teachers and MOET officials, classroom observations of teaching, and review of key GOL and MOET documents were all employed. The study reveals that teaching and school activities in rural primary schools in Lesotho have changed very little in the past 30 years, and that teachers0́9 understanding of child-centered pedagogies is limited. While the MOET identifies teachers as the primary reason for the poor quality of education in the country, this study suggests that teachers alone must not be blamed, identifying a web of interrelated factors that contribute to poor quality. These factors include poor quality teacher training programs, lack of consistent training opportunities for principals, and lack of support and supervision at the district and national levels of MOET. It is hoped that these findings are useful in informing policy aimed at improving the quality of education in Lesotho. The reports of teaching and learning activities at the classroom and school level provide data that is essential, particularly because there is a lack of classroom-level data since the introduction of Free Primary Education in Lesotho in 2000.

Abstract: Despite being exposed to the Learner-Centred Approach (LCA) through traditional teacher professional development since 2000, teachers in Tanzania have generally failed to implement LCA in secondary schools. However, previous studies on the learning study in different parts of the world have shown encouraging results in developing teachers' competencies. This study investigates how the learning study guided by the variation theory can enhance teachers' competencies using the LCA in Tanzania secondary schools. It addresses two questions: what are the changes of teachers' understanding of LCA through learning study rounds in a Tanzanian secondary school? And, what are the changes of teachers' capability of implementing LCA through learning study rounds in bringing about student learning in a Tanzanian secondary school? A group of three teachers (John, Benja & Peter) in a school implemented learning studies for a period of one year. All forms two (N= 255) and three (N=240) students took part in three research lessons. The study adopted case study and phenomenographic research approaches. It used teachers' interview protocols, lesson video recordings, lesson preparatory meetings, teacher's journals, and students' tests as research instruments. The teachers' experiences and implemention of the LCA were studied before and during the three rounds of learning studies. Data were analysed using variation framework and SPSS version 16.0 for students' tests. The study has two main findings. First, teachers involved in the three learning study rounds changed their understanding of LCA. They changed from seeing LCA as methodological (before the learning study) to treating it as subject content and even as far as seeing it as object of learning (during the learning studies) orientations. These changes were gradual and differed slightly, depending on the particular aspect(s) (the method, the content or the object of learning) a teacher focused more on than other aspects at a given time. Second, guided by the variation theory through learning studies, teachers' capability to implement LCA improved progressively in slightly different ways, which in turn improved student learning. The teachers changed from simply making classroom pedagogical arrangements before the learning study to engaging the learners in either the content or the object of learning and enabling them to discern critical aspects of the objects of learning in terms of variation and invariance of those aspects during the learning studies. The study concludes that implementing learning study - guided by the variation theory - may be effective in enhancing teachers' ways of conceiving and practicing LCA with a primary focus on student learning. In addition, as teachers increase their understanding of learning study and the use of variation theory they may advance their understandings in designing and teaching LCA lessons, thereby increasing possibilities for student learning.
