Book excerpt: Students with and at-risk for reading disabilities (RD) are performing well below proficient level cutoffs on assessments of reading achievement (National Center for Education Research [NCES], 2017) and this has been the trend for the past two decades (NCES, 2017; Fuchs, Fuchs, & Vaughn, 2014; Vaughn & Wanzek, 2014). In particular, students with and at-risk for RD struggle with reading fluency, a foundational reading skill interconnected with other skills critical to reading proficiency, such as comprehension (Algozzine, Marr, Kavel, & Dugan, 2009; National Reading Panel, 2000). Typically, oral reading fluency (ORF) is targeted with repeated reading practices and few alternative approaches have been researched. Data Mountain is a program that includes components related to self-determination (i.e., self-monitoring, goal setting, positive attributions) and has shown promise in enhancing struggling readers’ oral reading fluency (Didion & Toste 2019; Didion, Toste, & Benz, 2019). The present study tested the effects of Data Mountain on the ORF of 83 students with and at risk for RD (47% female) in 2nd through 5th grades (M = 9.97 years; SD = 1.23). A randomized controlled trial design assigned students to one of three conditions: Data Mountain delivered in small groups (DM-G), Data Mountain delivered individually (DM-I), or a reading practice only comparison condition. The two treatment conditions allowed for comparison of program dosage; in a small group, students have additional opportunity for relatedness (i.e., feeling connected to others in social settings; Deci & Ryan, 2012) and peer modeling (Chard, Vaughn, & Tyler, 2002). Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was employed to examine differences in ORF growth across conditions. Moderating effects of grade-level, pretest performance, and English learner (EL) status were tested. Results indicated that treatment students, combined DM-G and DM-I conditions, read an average of 31 more words correct per minute than comparison students at the end of the study. Additionally, Data Mountain students growth rate was twice that of comparison students. There were no statistically significant differences between delivery formats or moderating effects of grade-level, pretest fluency performance, or EL status. The generalizability possibilities of the Data Mountain program across academic disciplines and behaviors are extensive. The transferable possibilities of Data Mountain to be an effective means to provide students with an opportunity to learn self-determination skills and improve ORF, while simultaneously progress monitoring struggling learners is significant to the field of special education

This study evaluated the impact of video self-modeling (VSM) on oral reading fluency in four upper elementary students at-risk for failing in reading. A multiple-baseline design across participants was used to evaluate the outcomes of the VSM intervention. The results indicate that VSM may have a positive impact on reading fluency of students at-risk for reading failure; the use of VSM was positively associated with increases in reading fluency in three of the four participants. The participant for whom VSM alone did not result in substantial reading gains needed an additional repeated reading intervention to improve fluency. Generalization occurred for all participants and some evidence of maintenance was noted in three participants. Social validity surveys indicated high acceptability of the VSM intervention by study participants.

Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Book excerpt: The authors of this action research project report implemented oral reading fluency-based interventions for the purpose of improving students' reading comprehension. Six students in grade three, six students in grade five and six students in grade six participated in the study from Monday, August 27 through Friday, December 7, 2007. Researchers observed that in the targeted reading groups, deficiencies in any element of oral reading fluency were associated with reading comprehension problems. The teacher researchers used the following tools to document evidence; Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) Oral Reading Fluency (ORF), which indicated that 50% of students at Site A and 83% of students at Site B were below benchmark score for oral reading fluency. The comprehension based assessment (Choose-A-Title) resulted in 61% of the students choosing the incorrect title. As a result of the student survey, it indicated that 17% of the students responded "almost never" when asked "I think others like my reading". Students' struggles with accuracy, rate, and prosody revealed deficiencies that inhibited the processing of meaning. The interventions implemented were three 20-minute weekly sessions consisting of one session of reader's theater activities including choral reading, echo reading, and poetry, and two sessions of partner reading during which student pairs engaged in repeated oral reading and reading along silently while listening as oral reading was modeled. Teachers are encouraged to model fluent reading illustrating proper rate and accuracy. Reading and rereading exercises such as reading with a model reader, choral reading, reader's theater, and partner reading can improve fluency (Vaughn & Linan-Thompson, 2004). As a result of the interventions, students demonstrated increased awareness of the three elements of oral reading fluency: accuracy, rate, and prosody. Students practiced self-monitoring these elements while participating in paired reading and cooperative learning groups. The post data revealed that there was a decrease in students' positive responses to "I read with expression and feeling". Thirty-three percent of students responded "almost always" on pre documentation and 28% on post documentation. The "usually" category declined from 50% to 44%. Students responded best to interventions that involved repeated reading in the form of rehearsal followed by performance, such as choral poetry reading and reader's theater. Students demonstrated engagement in the activities while becoming more realistic in self-evaluation. This experimental study used a pretest-posttest design. The participants (N = 63) were recruited and randomly assigned to a control group (n = 30) and an experimental group ( n = 33). The speaking test: Klomjit Lincoln Measure of Spoken English (KLMSE), developed by the researcher, was administered as both pre and posttest. The treatment was an assignment to read out loud-to-self. The Evaluation of Using Oral Reading to Improve Oral Fluency, a quantitative scale questionnaire survey instrument, was used to measure the participants' perception toward using oral reading-to-self in three categories; difficulty, effectiveness, and language input. Data included demographic information, pre and posttest scores, and questionnaire responses. ANCOVA, t test, and descriptive statistics were conducted to analyze the data. The ANCOVA determined that oral fluency of the participants was improved significantly after reading out loud-to-self, F(1, 60) = 4.78, p = .03. The participants perceived oral reading-to-self as easy, effective, language input. There was no statistical significant difference between male and female participants on perception toward oral reading-to-self in the three categories; difficult, male (M = 2.50, SD = .81), female (M = 2.26, SD = .87), t(31) = .97, p = .34, effective, male (M = 3.63, SD = .87), female (M = 4.84, SD = .29), t(31) = -.94, p = .36, and language input, male (M = 3.88, SD = .91), female (M = 4.02, SD = .55), t(31) = .52, p = .60. The difference between male and female participants on posttest scores was not significant, F(1, 30) = 1.76, p = .19.
