Book excerpt: Excerpt from Improving Human Relations in School Administration This is not a standard text in school administration. The reader who wishes to learn about the complex and manifold responsibilities of the school principal will need to look elsewhere. The present volume is written for those practicing principals, or those who intend to be principals, who desire to improve the quality of their educational leadership in the school. If American democracy is to work it needs to be implemented. Schools were created to serve the American people. They can serve best by promoting democratic living. Book excerpt: As a teacher, how can I increase my personal effectiveness, and how can I improve the quality of relationships in the classroom? These are the two fundamental questions which Human Relations in Education sets out to answer - in a way that will appeal to all those concerned with education. Eric and Carol Hall examine issues such as self-concept, social and emotional learning, the dynamics of the staffroom and the classroom, as well as stress management and relaxation. They demonstrate how these affect human relations in schools and colleges. Interpersonal communications and counselling skills are then examined in terms of language, imagery and non-verbal communication. With its original blend of theory and practical exercises, Human Relations in Education is essential reading for both experienced teachers and teachers in training.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Resources for School Leaders contains comprehensive and systematic coverage of all aspects of public school human resource management. Unlike other books focused on this topic, the authors ground their text on "student learning" and outline strategies designed to enhance school climate and culture. The early chapters focus on relevant theories and research supporting current human resource methods- required learning in any educational leadership preparation program. The following chapters take a more practitioner approach as main topics include recruiting, hiring, orientation, mentoring, leading, and professional growth of teachers. The differentiating factors between this text by Davis &Fowler and other texts on the market is (1) the forward looking approach taken by the authors in that they not only exam current 21st century HRD practices but also give the reader insight into future HRD methods in a century dominated by K-12 marketization; (2) the focus on building level HRD systems; and (3) the thorough descriptions of available technology tools that can be utilized to improve HRD systems and heighten quality control through efficient data-based decisions thereby impacting instructional capacity and student learning. The case studies are relevant and relatable, and offer practical strategies and techniques that can be easily implemented at the building or district level.
